Xbox multi platform discussion

One guy’s guess, who was wrong last year. The reality is they don’t have the capability of full multi-platform launches at every dev. Part of “case by case” is that some studios just aren’t setup for it right now.

Can’t see PD going day 1 on PS5 considering how long it took to develop and the alleged development issues. Gears I could see The Coalition being able to do it due to their expertise with UE5, but I still have a hard time seeing MS make Day 1 moves with their biggest franchises for some reason. I still think they’ll keep some form of exclusivity on those, at least timed exclusivity.

Also, Analysts gonna analyst. We’ve all seen how many times they’ve got things wrong!

So basically he “predicted” that AI would grow (duh!) and took three stabs in the dark, all of which were wrong. Including the Switch 2 release, which basically everyone else expects in the first half of 2025 (similar to the original Switch release period.)

I think I’ll take his predictions with a fistful of salt, thanks.

It’s probably not realistic to release all of their titles on PS5 this year, at least not those that haven’t been in development for PS5 for a while now, but eventually most of them will, I expect Starfield to be on PS5 with the release of the next big expansion.

I think they should give them Starfield on PS5 same day they release Elder Scrolls 6 on Xbox…

Looking forward to seeing how this turns out for the Xbox console brand, we just entered 2025 which will be the 5th year for the current console generation, time flies and the Switch 2 isn’t even out yet! by the end of this year we’ll probably be seeing a lot of next gen rumors or hell maybe even at this year’s Xbox summer show we’ll get a glimpse of what they plan to do next with hardware, I still think they have at least another generation planned but it will be a totally different thing and I don’t expect that many exclusives anymore, certainly not from the ABK and Zenimax umbrella and even XGS eventually, I think they’re gonna want to have Fable and Avowed on as many devices as possible for example, Fable seems very big budget to me and could be a big hit like we’ve seen with certain big RPGs in recent years if it’s multiplat.

The days of Xbox having exclusives are long gone in the console space, they already did away with full console exclusivity years ago when they started releasing games on PC but now they’re clearly embracing just being a full third party publisher with a hardware faction, but since they still have that hardware device I wish they would at least try to make it the indisputable best in the industry, at least make consumers desire your device even if it doesn’t have exclusives, I think having a next gen handheld could be a way to do that and increase their market share, assuming that they make it powerful enough not to get ignored by certain big games like it is currently happening with Xbox due to Series S.

Make the next Xbox generation able to run Steam, a powerful traditional console and a handheld, go all in and see what happens, they need to differentiate themselves from PlayStation even more and this could be a good way to make it work and succeed in hardware, I’m just saying, a device that is both a console and a PC for the price of a console could be something that is a big hit and a handheld as well able to run the next GTA and Steam… Xbox could be looking at relevancy in the hardware space again, I’m of the opinion that just because they are done with exclusives it doesn’t mean that they can’t be successful in hardware.

So in 2028 then

I see Microsoft porting games to PlayStation 5 day one the same way as Sony porting their games to PC day one - when all the studios are finally setup and ready to do it is when it will happen. Until then, it’s a case by case basis.

I personally feel some kind of timed exclusivity should always exist, where possible, when it comes to first party games. Preservation of value can be directly attributable to periods of exclusivity.

I don’t think day one on GP, Play Anywhere/cloud gaming etc are in and of themselves enough of a differentiator to encourage participation in the most profitable arm of the MS eco-system, namely the purchase of 1st party hardware and subsequent software on that hardware.

6 months exclusivity at a minimum, where possible, would entice some FOMO entrants into the “full-fat” eco-system, as opposed to the “diet level” participants who are buying software on other platforms 9thereby losing a % in sales to other platform holders).

We’ll see though. Clearly MS think they’ll benefit more from breaking down the exclusivity wall, particularly if their offering elsewhere e.g. GP Family Plan (if it ever comes out fully) acts as sufficient differentiator.

Honestly, i think its a daft idea. Especifically the whole full multiplat plan(Which has not been fully confirmed just yet, just the no red line thing), just feels like greed talking instead of actual survivability.

With that in mind, i do feel like they will only feel the utter lack of users if they decided to port way too many games over to rival platforms without a true incentive, which would solely be play anywhere and game pass. On which i feel like they would not move the needle as much as they think they would and i do think neglecting their consumers in favor of Playstation and Nintendo users is just no smart.

While timed exclusives work, it only really benefits smaller studios instead of higher third party ones noawadays cause of the current economy. So i don’t think it would move people over.

No offense to you, am just stating that with the way things are currently, it would be highly irresponsible of Higher Ups to straight up ignore their platform in favor of short term profit from Playstation and Nintendo users.

As i feel like doing so would backfire on their overall plans for innovation towards Cloud and Ai(Which Satya has been alluring to forever now), in which they NEED the hardware to fuction properly as well as the current users both from pc and the platform itself for that to have meaningfull advances towards their goals.

I really flip flop on the strategy myself. One day i think its bonkers, the next i think it will not only grow the business but will be what all platforms will ultimately do.

That’s what i have been feeling, like there’s four types of fans of Xbox:

The ones who believe that this will kill the platform and are moving to Pc or other platforms (Doomers and Gloomers). Thankfully that is a minority at the moment but let’s hope Xbox does NOT do something to REALLY make people go over to other places.

The ones who genuiely think is an overall good strategy to keep them afloat for the time being. No offense to those who do think its wise, just my honest observation(Business Sense)

The ones who are keeping a watchful eye and see if things are changing way too rapidly for them then they will make a decision. (Watcher)

Then those who who are kinda in a state of wait and see but want do remain hopeful that Xbox does nothing to truly jeoperdize the users of the ecosystem in some shape or form. (The fans)

I think the reality is no one is certain, and people are dealing with things as they see it. Xbox itself may be testing the waters to find what works and to achieve the best balance possible seeing all this is new. I think Xbox like Nintendo is trying to find their lane. To me I don’t think they are at a place for all their games to go multiplat seeing as there isn’t any publisher out there that can churn out 10 or more multiplats yearly not even Ubisoft that has over 20 thousand developers. I do think the idea for games to be playable on any hardware just like movies is the best and will allow for expansion how they get there is the thing. For example, the Xbox OS and hybrid PC seems like one that will work and put a lot of the uncertainty to rest but it is still a rumor right now. One thing Xbox and their content needs is visibility. People need to be aware of Xbox and the content it offers, and I hope they are able to get there this year with their content.

I believe they are currently under 19k (so MS Gaming now technically has more) but your point still stands.

The frustrating part is they are not focusing on the games most us want (give us Splinter Cell!). As a Ubisoft fan it’s so sad to see them in their current position, even more so when you see they are valued at only around £1.4 Billion. Even as things stand they should be releasing 5 games in 2025: Just Dance, AC Shadows, Anno 117, FarCry 7 & Division: Heartland and that doesn’t count any of their long term projects (cough beyond good and evil 2! cough).

IF Xbox ever acquired Ubisoft then 10 games a year would be very achievable .

I see what you’re getting at, but my point is that Microsoft should be doing more to push PC game sales. They should look at the numbers and not be happy with them.

For example, looking at Hi-Fi Rush’s sales on the PC and wanting more. Neither Nintendo or Sony’s games on the PC affected that game and I don’t see it happening for another few years until their games become day and date on PC. And within the same genre.

I understand Microsoft’s push for more platforms, something that is sacrificing their platform to an extent. I’m thinking that they don’t need to rush on their multi-platform releases if they can ensure great sales on the PC and Xbox first. I personally think that the timed exclusive route is the best way to go.
