Xbox multi platform discussion

A dude i follow on Twitter i know said the following in regards to if console exclusives and i think it wields some degree of merit based on what he spoke:

“Only in the sense that I know exclusives sell consoles and they need to sell consoles so that I personally don’t miss out on games that decide to skip the platform due to low sales”

“Rather, I need them so long as other platforms are using them as a competitive tool to ensure console hardware is adopted at a rate that justifies it’s own future and 3rd party support.”

That’s a suprisingly a good points to be made, does anyone know if that whole development initiate has been doing good progress on that? Cause do me, that’s gonna be mighty vital.

I‘m not making a claim but tried to post some questions that people could ask themselves to help them rationalize a decision.

Xbox Series X has a far better VRR coverage than the PS5. I’d literally be downgrading my console experience if I jumped over to PlayStation, i.e. where getting a smooth experience in many games apparently involves upgrading to the Pro. Say for example running Elden Ring in performance mode on my Xbox Series X is smooth due to VRR and low framerate compensation, on the PS5 whenever it falls below 48fps, you feel the judder.

I have a 120hz VRR TV and I’m telling you all, the Series X is a better piece of hardware than the PS5. It matters. And god knows what gaming will look like in five years time, so I’m not jumping ship based on a wild guess about what MS’ next hardware is, especially when Sony are charging as much for the PS5 Pro (which basically suggests their PS6 will be 800 euros day one).

Maybe not you and many others, but it’s undeniable that many people have no problem doing just that. See the exodus of Xbox 360 to PS4. Furthermore, for Xbox users who are primarily Game Pass users, they’re only leaving behind ‘‘rented’’ games and don’t actually have a library, so it’s not as hard for some.

What numbers are you referring to? MS doesn’t release any numbers often anymore. Last time they shared Game Pass subscribers numbers, they had to add Xbox Live Gold users (renamed to Xbox Game Pass core) to make it look like there was growth.

The numbers available by analysts are not the greatest. Mat Piscatella: Xbox Series are tracking 11% behind Xbox One, while PS5 is tracking 8% ahead of PS4 in the US. And that’s Xbox’s best and most important market. Now, the decline in Xbox Series doesn’t necessarily mean they all go to PlayStation. I have no doubt that many console users are moving over to Steam from both Sony and MS. And it’s not all bad, in Asia, Xbox Series is doing better than Xbox One. But to say that more are coming in than leaving, overall, no one can say that with certainty.

The only recent piece of information I can think of indicating that Xbox hardware was doing better was when Phil stated that they had more Xbox console users than they’ve ever had in history. Statements like that don’t tell the true state of things. If it’s anything like Sony, at least half of those Xbox console users are still Xbox One users, and there is no guarantee they’ll remain in the Xbox ecosystem and won’t move on to PS or Steam when the time to upgrade will come. There’s a lot of discontentment online, and the impact will be felt in the coming years when it’s time for those users to upgrade. Let’s just say I highly doubt the Xbox Series will even match the 58 millions sold of the Xbox One.

Xbox doomed!

As a consumer, other people being able to play games doesn’t affect me. Gamepass being able to exist is all I care about, and PS5 players helping finance that is fine by me!

As has been said, many time, the Xbox One/PS4 gen is the one people are taking forward with them. Unless Xbox or PlayStation do not support BC at some point those libraries are vastly different than going from the 360 to the xbox one or ps3 to ps4.

I def invested in Xbox series due to being in ecosystem and promise things were going to get better. The cherry on top for me was getting Bethesda.

I am a person that owns all consoles, but if most games are going multiplat next gen. Then I see the current xbox value proposition might not be for me. Instead of spending $600 for a console and $20/month for gamepass. I can just use that money to buy the Microsoft games I want on other platforms . Saying that I might just say forget console console gaming and just invest in a gaming PC since best of both worlds and I can still sub to gamepass and free online play

I am not really an achievement hunter, so that’s whatever, and losing stuff like play anywhere and quick resume would suck, but I will be fine without these features. I think the toughest thing for me would be losing my library because I have 700+ owned games over the year. I will probably just keep my series x, so I can play those games

If I were to leave xbox it would be most likely to Playstation if PC gaming prices get too crazy in time for next gen. Ideally, if xbox goes mostly multiplat I would only stay if the hybrid console rumor is true and that it has access to other storefronts

Honestly, given recent upbringings from numerous folks online. I do have to wonder if, when next gen comes will current users of Xbox go there or will they only remain on their current hardware because overall feelings for Xbox is overall low even with some massive wins. I also think that Microsoft is making a bad decision by being ignorant of their current customer dissatisfaction with the recent discussions and interviews.

Like several folks are questioning their commitment towards their hardware and i am starting to feel very conflicted overall. Like, to they just drop hardware and loss billions in favor of Playstation and Nintendo users? Cause i wil honestly demand refunds if that were to ever happen like any normal person. Like that’s what my mind been wondering right now. Its like they don’t care about their audience of over two decades of history, both good and bad.

Am starting to be very afraid about next year and the abyssmal messaging they been having with their audience.

Like is there anything positive that they can actually muster without the use of Game Pass or play anywhere as an incentive?

You must be talking to some rather miserable folks who bought into all this malarky.

Find more cheerful people and you’ll see a more positive outlook as this is the best support Xbox has ever had and are improving as time goes on.

I have no doubt that ‘people stuck in console exclusivity wars’ world are ‘down’ about Xbox, because Xbox isn’t playing that game anymore. Do whatever you want. Just I also recommend doing yourself a favour, which is look at what you can actually play here and now. If that isn’t good enough, then what’s the problem in the first place?

Wow. Relax. Cheer up. All I can say is for all those not on board with this strategy Xbox has up till the next gen to figure out how to bring them all on board and I think they will. This is a business after all and every little penny matters. To me I think they need to find that platform branding like Valve that pacifies all these excitements.

I think the problem is….I prefer the hardware? When I mean the hardware I mean the controller (especially the elite) If Microsoft made controllers for PS5 I would have no reason to own a Xbox, I love the controllers that much.

I already stopped purchasing games on Xbox and started to purchase on PS5. But I still use Gamepass. I also know we are 4 or 5 years into this gen and games are still cross gen so even if a new gen starts I don’t have to gamble on the next Xbox (if there is one) being a gamble for me. I can still use the Series X.

People constantly displaying this sort of attitude and completely ignoring the facts, no matter how often they’re presented with them, is exactly why Xbox “doesn’t care” about them anymore. It’s an exercise in futility.

If you honestly believe that this is how “normal people” behave, well… I don’t know what to tell you.

The other thing is there are clearly many games not yet multiplatform, and with no sign of going that way. It doesn’t stop the possibility of course, but the pattern so far seems to be ‘games in series’ (Hellblade 2 is counter this) and ‘big popular franchises’ (Indiana Jones). I would not be surprised at all if everything goes multi platform eventually, but equally the same if only a percentage of games per year do so.

This apparent confusion about red lines and case by case isn’t confusing. They consider everything… case by case. ?

At this point I just want Microsoft to offer a system that can also play Steam games, basically a glorified PC for next gen as their high end system that can function as a console and PC, I wouldn’t care if it costed a premium price, with the handheld being the weaker system, the reason I say this is because I did try to just move on from Xbox hardware since they’re basically about to become a full 3rd party soon but honestly it wasn’t worth it on PS5 just yet due to Game Pass for which is still a much better value than what I was getting on PS5, so I’ve become to care little about their games going on PS5 but man at the least give me more incentives for Xbox hardware, like, why didn’t they make a super powerful Xbox Pro? you know little things like that to tell people “hey this is another reason to stay within our ecosystem still”

I know I care little these days and I probably will be on Xbox until the end but I wish they showed that they cared a little more about the console business, it doesn’t mean going back to making everything exclusive.

Great point. I think that is the best thing and I think Microsoft or Xbox coming out and saying there next Xbox would be a console that is very much a PC with all the storefronts would pretty much end the anxiety many are feeling. Every time an Xbox game goes over it makes the platform seem a little less defined. What Xbox is doing seems more Steam like only Steam has learnt how to define it’s platform. It wouldn’t matter if any of Valve’s game is released on other platforms it would only strengthen the platform. I really hope Xbox can better define their platform as they move away from the console only thing.

This 100%.

Yeah, I think they have to strongly get this point out when they unveil their next gen plan. The idea of multiple storefronts sounds very enticing especially with the cost of building a PC. It’s a gamble that could work out because if you look at the steam hardware chart most PC gamers are playing on GPUs that are about the level of series x and PS5. So, if they’re able to provide a next gen hardware that gives you access to that with a console experience. Then that could be huge. I guess the only tricky part is paying for online play.

Lets ask a different question:

With about 50% of Playstation users still being on PS4, what is the adoption of the PS6 going to look like? If you play the exclusives game you also have to consider your own users. So like how soon do new games become PS6 exclusive? How long do PS5 users hold on to their consoles? Having a perpetual library that stays with you forever hurts new hardware adoption and that is a problem if you are banking on selling consoles as your primary focus.

Dedicated console + pay to play online is becoming harder to justify.
