No one has said “developers feelings” dictate what platforms Xbox games are released on.
Games cost money to make, and costs have ballooned in recent years. Game Pass growth has stagnated and it seems as a result that Microsoft have looked to other platforms in order to generate the revenue required to keep these studios operating.
I imagine that if Gamepass subs spiked again, or even took a massive nosedive, MS would potentially tighten the reins on exclusivity once more. Going up means they can afford to have more exclusives. Going down massively might mean people are unsubscribing because they can get the games elsewhere.
The problem is, the public (well, the commentariat) wants certainty and MS wants complete flexibility. As usual, MS will probably be forced to backtrack from it’s preferred/ first position, as it often does.
Heelturning your strategy at the behest of employees is weak leadership. This wouldnt happen anywhere else.
If anything is responsible for game pass not growing as fast as they hoped its their unwillingness to leverage exclusivity.
If they want game pass to grow, stop selling Call of Duty, Minecraft and Diablo on other platforms. Simple. Instead Xbox leadership acquieced their library, allowed timed ps5 exclusivity on games they owned, gave Sony 10 year guarenteed access to CoD, rolled out the red carpet for Bethesda games and is now looking at the back catalogue of XGS titles to port.
For everyone…and yet Nintendo and Sony are more or less staying in their own lanes. Someone needs to tell Phil that…its ok to steal marketshare. This is war after all.
You can try to grow the market at he same time. Sadly its too late. The damage is done. The console is irreparably harmed.
Ah well, nothing to do but play games and be merry then - the next 6 months are stacked with SW Outlaws out now, AC Shadows and Dragon Age coming soon, plus Flight Sim 2024 then Indy then Avowed.
But seriously, the real irreparable harm was the One launch - everything since has been damage control, and yes that includes multi-platform for some games.
Even if everything was made exclusive but CoD it wouldn’t make much difference to Xbox sales unfortunately.
As for CoD’s 10 year deal, you’re missing a point, they’d not have got ABK past regulators without it, so they just wouldn’t have ABK at all.
And honestly, we’re all just going round in circles - venting on a forum isn’t going to change Xbox’s strategy so best we just enjoy those games and see how it all plays out
I agree with some of this, but that line has nothing to do with being multiplat and more about being accessibility. That campaign was more about players not being left out due to accessibility, which is a powerful campaign imo.
I do agree that a lot of the direction today is because console sales and gamepass subs stagnated. So, they had to pivot to this multiplatform strategy. I do agree with others if sales improve they’ll walk back on this, which is why they’re saying “case by case”
It will always be Case by case because they don’t always have the bandwidth to get VERSIONS out for every device. They had to pay companies to do it for certain ones and they’re only going to do it if that makes sense and it won’t for every game.
Do you ever feel like you’re a complete outlier as to some of the things that draw you to a platform?
All these people talking about “Xbox games coming to PlayStation so might as well get a PS5” and I’m at the back with my hand raised like “uhh but Gears Tactics >.>”
Yes this is a Gears Tactics appreciation post, make a sequel Microsoft please and thank you.
As someone who’s had both consoles since the PS4 Pro, I always wonder why no one talks about the Xbox UI and overall user experience being so much better than PlayStation. One exclusive per year is never going to make up for that.
I might just go PC/cloud next gen for PlayStation first party games.
Haha yes. I get triggered slightly when Xbox makes dumb decisions so people just assume you should go over to PlayStation … thing is PlayStation has its own problems. I’m not even convinced that the PS6 will have backwards compatibility with PS4. I watched PlayStation and Nintendo attempt to resell the same games over and over. I will NEVER (again) buy third party games on PlayStation or Nintendo.
Absolutely. Overall user experience is so important. The fact that Xbox can offer free cloud saves that are so seamless and also digital refunds, those two things alone are worth as much or even more than an exclusive.
PS6 and Switch 2 not having BC would be one of the funniest things ever if that was the case. Mostly because of certain game collections skipping the one console that is assured to have it.
In any case if I decided not to go Xbox next gen , PC would be my main platform rather than any of the other two console makers.
You know a few years ago publishers on PC decided to start their own store fronts and take their games off steam. That didn’t go so well, and many had to backtrack. Today the Epic games store has what could be one of the biggest games in the world (FORTNITE) exclusive to their store, yet the game isn’t doing much for the store. Epic games also have a ton of exclusives offers free games better cut and incentives for developers and yet they are still lagging behind. In fact, Rumble verse died and was shut down, Fall Guys has seen decline with layoffs as well as Rocket league. A ton of franchises that Epic bought and made exclusive to their store have mostly seemed MIA yet this exclusives games would be the rage if they were on Steam. Not saying exclusives are bad but clearly in the case of Epic they haven’t helped. I think exclusives are great when they can define the platform like when they’re built from the ground up to use everything the platform has even things unknown for example Halo showed FPS were possible on consoles and Blinx showed the hard drive could be used to record gameplay and use in the game something POP sands of time was able to use.
Features such as Quick Resume on Xbox are nice, and perhaps more are needed. In any case I think great, or solid platform plus solid content is the winning formula not just content.
I am a happy Xbox series s owner (love the compacity, so easy to take it with me to play with Friends)
And while I must Say that I often have small problems (bo2 xbox360 log in problem, bo4 offline local play not Always working), I can’t say that I would find a better plateform to play the way I like video games
I don’t Care about the exclusives as long as Xbox can bring good games on the console
Nah.
Its only MS that has an issue selling consoles.
The PS3 sold 87 million consoles. The PS4 sold 117 million and counting. And, as for the PS5, its on course to excced the PS4.
The WiiU sold 13 million units, while the switch sold 143 million units an counting. Its Xbox that is falling behind, no one else, and to say otherwise is ridiculous.
Now, lets be honest, while Xbox doesnt sell as many consoles, it also puts its games on PC day and date. So, while Sony can only sell to the PS base (single player games) day and date, MS has Xbox plus the ENTIRE PC user base of 132 million unique users a month on Steam alone.
Yet, with a greater user base to sell their games on, its still not enough for MS.
And, the reason the Xbox One dropped in sales from the 360 is the decision MS made to put games on PC. Millions of people who gamed on PC also double dipped on Xbox to play games like Halo and Gears they couldnt play on PC.
Of course the XO wasnt going to match the 360 when they made that decision.
MS told us how they needed ABK to get that mobile market. Well, they got it. Still wasnt enough.
So all of ABK and specifically King, all of PC and all of Xbox wasnt enough to satisfy MS. They still needed PS sales.
This is all short term actions from a weak nerved company.
Here is something to think about.
Sony only releases one or two first party games a year, and normally only on PS. They have no GAAS cash cow other than Destiny, which is dying.
MS on the other hand has all of ABK, including alot of GAAS games like COD, WOW and all those King mobile ones like Candy Crush.
MS also has all of Bethesda, including GAAS games like ESO and FO76.
MS also has all of XGS, including the GAAS cash cow of fucking Minecraft on all platforms.
All ABK is multiplat, and all of Beth and XGS is on both Xbox AND PC.
Yet, even with all of that, Sony still has more gaming revenue than MS.
Why? How? Simple, the 30% they get from everything sold on PS is greater than all of MS gaming.
Yet, MS in their infinate wisdom thinks that its better to destroy their console, and take some extra PS sales (minus 30%) of the four games they release a year, than to build their own Xbox base.
MS is a stupid comapny, and the console is where it is totally because of poor decisions MS made, and continues to make.
