Xbox multi platform discussion

I understand, I was asked to find where Phil said “Case by Case” as far as their multi plat strategy and produced the articles and quotes, he was talking about Bethesda games and the latest issue causing this uproar is a Bethesda game that went multi plat.

The quotes and questions and article are perfectly in line with the current discussion on Xbox Multi plat strategy as Phil was literally asked about it directly. Maybe if you want an up to the minute update from Phil you can ask him on twitter.

I simply do not understand where this confusion lies, They said “case by case” and are acting on that, feigning confusion over this is just silly

You all would be satisfied if Phil would come out today and say ‘its case by case’?

I don’t believe it.

Exactly, at no point has a single journalist ever asked Sony to clarify their stance or are they pretending that porting games to PC has zero effect on PS5 sales, Steam reached a new peak today and I’m sure it’s not all just Xbox or new users.

Xbox is finally doing the right thing and keeping quiet, I would have liked them to not even address Indiana Jones, because it doesn’t help anything, nor does it reassure people, just more fodder for console wars.

These journos need more articles and Xbox talking all the time was just ideal for them, now Xbox is finally acting like Nintendo and Sony so they are demanding answers.

case by case is tricky, and I think we’ll know full details in 2-3 years from now. It’s way too late to just flip the switch and make things multiplat. I think we’ll have a clear idea when next gen starts because we’ll know if truly case by case because they’ll now have time needed to have simultaneous releases.

The problem is this quote was before the acquisition and after the acquisition Phil looked into the camera and said he was making things clear when he said Bethesda games would be exclusive to platforms where Game pass exists. It’s obvious the message has changed and that is fine some are okay with it and others are not. Even now some are still saying it isn’t everything while many still say the whole slate. I think what many are just asking is for clarity. There wouldn’t be need for a thread like this if there was clarity. Now as you say you don’t see a need for them to saying anything, but some do and not that they have bad intentions. There could be reasons why they choose to dance round it like the ongoing FTC case for example. It would be funny if this uproar is repeated at the timing of the Game Awards or maybe the TGS. What really interest me is the possibility of games going the way of movies in a uniform unified format.

I’m not sure where that “rude” thing came from but I didn’t say that. Maybe you’re quoting an accusation from someone else but for what it’s worth I don’t think anything you were saying here is rude or anything like that.

I just think we’re talking about different things here and not directly addressing each other’s points.

The way I see our disagreement is that we both want to see this console do well and disagree on how that will or can happen.

I just wanted to clarify that I’m not too concerned about random people on Twitter. On a separate point I did mention people on Instagram who looked like legit Xbox fans that were confused. I do think that points to a messaging issue. And then I moved on to a different topic and where I think there’s a strategy issue. Both of which will affect console sales this Fall and going forward.

I could but I don’t know if a forum post the best way to do it. Believe me, I would actually love to write an essay on this (for us ADHD folks it’s considered productive procrastination, and I do too much of it already) but is it a good use of my time? If I did a video I don’t think my seven subscribers on YouTube would actually be enough eyes to make it worth it. If I wrote an essay in this thread there might be a couple hundred people that see it.

Maybe an article for Xbox Era? 20 years ago I used to write videogames news and reviews for a major Canadian paper.

Also would I get in trouble with Xbox considering my relationship with them if I’m overly critical in a highly publicized fashion? Can you imagine the headlines? “ID@Xbox developer criticizes Xbox strategy in essay”.

Everything I post on this forum is done from the perspective of an Xbox fan that prefers this console over other consoles. I would write that essay from that perspective. I consider myself a gamer first over a developer. But other people are going to twist things if I write or publish anything other than a forum post.

I agree with the sentiment that MS/Xbox has no obligation to “pick a lane”. Why should they? No other company locks themselves into releasing on certain platforms. Does SE state the Final Fantasy will be Playstation Exclusive? Does EA promise every single game they release will be on all platforms?

Xbox and Phil just needs to keep quiet. How often does MS make a statement and the media praises it/we get good vibes from it?

It’s transparent as hell. What they are really saying is “Microsoft should tell me everything is coming to PlayStation because that is what I want to happen. I don’t want to have to consider an Xbox”

Of course that’s what it is. “Xbox needs to tell us which games will come to PS so people who are fans of those games can buy a PS and not worry about needing an Xbox.” Obviously if Xbox doesn’t let everyone know then they might be “forced” to buy an Xbox.

What do primary Xbox users or multiple platform users need clarity about? The games are still coming to Xbox, this is about clarity for primary PS users. The journalists and forums are all up in arms because (gasp) there are games that might or might not end up on PS, something Xbox users deal with all the time.

Feel like this is severely downplaying the feelings of Xbox fans. They seem way more curious annd vocal about the strategy than the PS fans.

I’m speaking more on the media reporting, and the idea that Xbox needs to “pick a lane”. Xbox fans really upset about this pretty much don’t like the idea of any Xbox games going to PS (outside of stuff like COD probably). I don’t think there is any questioning there

Maybe you’re right but I don’t think it’s helping the excitement in the community. This Gamescom from the outside seemed as shallow as ever almost down to levels of already forgotten when you compare it to the June showcase. I would say they need to at least have some sort of messaging to rejuvenate the community if they really care about it.

I don’t know I’m excited but I enjoy seeing new things and xbox did that. Hell xbox damn near carried Geoff showcase. And comparing an Xbox showcase against a Geoff showcase seems like a bad faith point. Unless you think Geoff June showcase was better than this one which could be can’t really remember much from his June one. But than again Geoff showcases are usually terribly paced with some decent games mixed it.

Xbox did have some good articles about their games coming out and it got downed out by the negative topics like always. I mean just in this site look at the amount of comments about the 30 FPS for avowed and compare it to the multiple ways to do a quest or multiple ending articles and you can clearly see why excitement is down. If people only wasn’t to focus on the negative and close their eyes to the positive there isn’t anything anyone or company can do to fix it.

To me it is sad to see those negative topics get so much traction and constantly pushed along by the same people while the good covering games gets left behind. If you want to be excited about gaming separate yourself from the negativity that is getting pushed by those.

I like seeing new things as well, but every one’s tastes are not necessarily the same. I didn’t watch ONL live and when I did watch it, I wasn’t really interested. There wasn’t much at the Gamescom event for me but the general insight that I get is it was vastly underwhelming even Xbox 3-day event at least from the outside. On the Xbox part perhaps, they should be doing all this at their own events where they seem to have better handle of things. Indeed, the June showcase was quite amazing, but you only get it once a year and from here on its other people’s show and then the Game Awards with Keighley again. I wouldn’t consider it bad faith considering Xbox told their fans to tune in for ONL and fans were just looking to be excited by new game announcements. Again look at the June show case people could have looked for and focus on the negative in fact some tried but because Xbox controlled the messaging and drowned out the noise it all turned out great. To be honest not much of this topic interest me. What I’m interested in is the handheld and hybrid console rumors. So, for me this multiplatform thing is one I’d rather see move quickly to get to what I think would more exciting.

I mean Xbox is doing something that’s unprecedented. I would be shocked if the gaming media didn’t question or ask what exactly is the strategy behind this.

This is uncharted waters. Microsoft doesn’t owe them anything but am I shocked the gaming media is mirroring what their readers are clearly interested in? Not really.

Don’t think any developers want their games to be exclusive, they want as many people as possible to play them (it’s why many cheer Game Pass for example as it gets their game into more hands).

I doubt the developers of Final Fantasy 7R/16 would want to limit their fanbase either, beyond the initial “it allows us to focus on a particular system at a time”.

I’ve seen a number of Xbox fans using the words of developers to attack them as not being “loyal” to Xbox, and unless they’re actually console-warring (which is rare) it’s not justified as they’re proud of their product and want everyone to enjoy it - they don’t really care about platform wars

It’s tough telling a studio you bought that you have to cut out the biggest platform your games have been on.

Sure but I can’t help but feel it’s in bad faith like usual. Technically this should be a positive pro-gamer move in a broad platform agnostic sense, yet this a negative because “what about Xbox fans!” Yes, somehow Xbox fans matter now when they normally get ignored. Where is the media advocating and asking questions for Xbox fans when something like Final Fantasy is exclusive? Xbox decides to release some games on other platforms and NOW they decide to demand clarity for the sake of Xbox fans, give me a break.

Having read every post in this thread I have a few thoughts.

The business rationale I totally understand, Costs go up, you look for other avenues to increase revenue and profit.

But where you question it is Microsoft/Xbox is prepared to unashamedly burn its fanbase & the little regard for the brand name in the quest of that money.

It is a business and many will happily just go along with the rhetoric and reasons for making the decisions being made that is fine by the way but it doesn’t give anyone the high ground.

But anyone who may stop and question the decisions being made, shouldn’t be looked down upon or deemed a doom sayer, just because you don’t like to hear it. If there’s negativity and you don’t like it, your anger should probably be at MS/Xbox for allowing the brand to be devalued to the point it is ridiculed therefore breeding the negativity in the search that profit.

Coming from it objectively I’ve had a PS5 and series X since day 1 I game on each just as much, I don’t particularly care what exclusive is for what.

But I do like competition, I like that I have 2 consoles to buy each gen. I know it’s cool to look down and you don’t console war but deep down everyone loves the little jabs between the companies. Not fans talking around it but the fight between the companies and I’m a casual in most respects,

Which is why I just look at Xbox and the way they announced that as 1 more thing think have some pride in yourself, yes you’re getting paid making that money revenue you need but at what cost

It’s like xbox is willing to get down on its knee’s for the money

Xbox/Ms aren’t your favourite sports team they are business so it’s ok to say I get it but you’re not coming off looking good at all.

Hopefully in the long run the game reputations win out and they restore their view of the brand which at the minute is looking from an optic point of view (not financial) a little desperate and weak.

I think the point I’m trying to make is, yes the business is changing but don’t go around seeming desperate willing to burn your brand to get what you want (money) by doing 1 more thing announcements, letting PlayStation not mention Xbox on any trailers etc. have some pride in yourselves.
