Xbox multi platform discussion

No, do not expect “every game”. That would be silly, because they’ve been pretty up front about it being a “case by case basis”.

Thanks to everyone for the replies.

Glad to clear up that nothing has been officially said it’s just from a line phol gave at once.

Your points make sense, I’ve always wondered why PC version have tons of graphical option but console versions don’t.

Oddly I’ve got more games from Epics free games than the 3 games I have on steam. Steam on a console is interesting, I don’t know if it’s any crazy silver bullet to rocket the platform but I’m all for it.

I almost see it as a soft exit from console while cleanly on boarding their existing customers to a new “ecosystem” (carrying over their existing libraries) and keeping them supported going forward.

Yes they sold well in certain markets, and in particular I think there was pent up demand for the PS5 (which was stock restrained like Xbox) which benefitted Xbox with some impatient gamers.

I’m not denying 2022 hurt Xbox, but your solutions require exactly the actions that are difficult to make because Sony’s dominant position is so entrenched.

Those deals for Ronin and Stellar Blade would’ve cost PlayStation probably less than 25% of what the same deal would cost Xbox, as they only have to be better than lost Xbox sales, while the bigger PlayStation install base costs a lot more to cover.

All those really expensive games and all the exclusivity deals (as the CoD and Hogwarts ones likely cost a ton, let alone FF etc even if cheaper than it is for Xbox) hurt Sony’s profit margin - despite having a significantly higher install base to extract money from.

So with higher profit margins expected (although not too bad until ABK where now they get noticed), a lower install base and much higher exclusivity costs, Xbox have to try stuff like buying publishers (but having to share some games to offset the smaller base), Game Pass, going early next gen etc. and being picky on the few exclusivity deals they can afford.

The parent company may cover big capital expenditure like acquisitions, but day to day Xbox has to make a profit and that’s where Sony has this advantage from being the dominant player

I am sorry using defeating attitude which is wrong wording. I understand the business decision due to their current placement. I just don’t think they would be making these moves if they sold more units which does result in more gamepass subs. It just feels that they never really attempted to push for better output because they easily could’ve done third party development deals like Playstation did and Sony investment has paid off. It just feels whenever they can get a push they always take step backwards in their efforts.

anyway, i completely understand why they’re going this path, but I feel they’re going at this path sooner than industry expected due to poor console sales result because they need more than xbox current install base+ steam

Stellar Blade possibly, but RIse of Ronin was Sony helping with development which install base doesn’t matter too much if covering. Stellar Blade type is possible due to dev being new at AAA games and might be willing to take Microsoft gamble due to possibility of being able to release both on xbox and pc if they’re covering development cost. Microsoft does have the ability to make these deals too, but they don’t do it that often on that scale. MS have stuff like Towerborne and that Avalanche game, so they’re able to do these type of deals too.

Yep I just mean as they’ll often cost more (as you’re asking them to sacrifice the biggest platform) they can only do less of them and have to be picky.

For example Stalker 2 would’ve looked like a masterstroke in 2022 to save the barren year, but obviously world events led to that being delayed.

I would like to see them do more of the Hero project stuff like Sony do (and I’m glad to see them hiring for Japan outreach for example, and getting Genshin) but I can see why it might be difficult and costly as they’re generally in regions where Xbox has a miniscule presence so despite PC being huge PS is probably the most common console…

It’s not a matter of just paying for production, the studio normally gets royalties of some sort based on performance of the game. See the fact that Alan Wake 2 hasn’t even broken even yet.

For it to be even to the developer, a smaller platform needs to pay a larger royalty.

Game Pass is also another complication, as everyone expects a Xbox published title to be available Day 1. So not only do you need to make up for being a smaller platform, you need to make up for giving it away on Game Pass. Probably why they do a lot of acquisitions lol

Watched the 30 minute Avowed gameplay. Looks right up my alley and I can’t wait to play it. With Indiana Jones, and Assassins Creed and Dragon Age there is just so much to play

I think there are a lot of factors for these deals, but I think a lot of these deals come to circumstances. For example Capcom approached Microsoft about SF:V and they turned them down and same with miHoYo with Genshin. I just think there’s a lot of variables of course because deals can be done like Microsoft last gen had stuff with Quantum Break, Titanfall, Ryse, and Sunset Overdrive. I know its different circumstances due to coming off the XB360 that sold a ton of units and had US market. I think with development costs going up there are studios that are willing to let Microsoft foot part of the bill to get the game to launch

I expected good things from Obsidian, and as an RPG fan I was always looking forward to Avowed, but what they’ve showed so far has surpassed my expectations. Really awesome stuff.

It’s a shame the 30fps thing is overshadowing it in the media right now, but hopefully they get that ironed out in time for release so the focus can just be on the game.

Got no issue with Indiana going to Ps5. But the way xbox are marketing is fucking shitty and tone deaf. In fact this whole week as been a PR disaster.

No black myth wukong on xbox would make sane xbox executives hold back multiplatform announcements. They should be angry about that

No one at Gamescom seemed angry, as they spent many millions of dollars on everything and pretty much dominated the conference. They said they “heard the feedback” about Indy’s PS5 reveal. With the casuals Xbox was everywhere.

Except its not and hardware sales are always declining. We will see if ms are serious wif they ship enough hardware this fall

The ps5 indy reveal was disgusting. Sorry. Put it in a tweet or blog after the trailer. Dont do it as a one .ore thing. Thats blatant trolling

Europe and germany is sony land. Of course theyll enjoy it.

It’s just vidya gamez, you don’t have to take it so seriously.

Yeeeeep. Esoecially when I cant think of a single Obsidian game that targeted 30fps on the base system except maybe KOTOR2 and they were just using bioware tech?

With all due respect, @Doncabesa is down in the trenches at Gamescom. He is seeing and hearing things that none of us at our keyboards can ever hope to see and hear. And just as important, he is reading all that is here and passing them off to Xbox suits as feedback.

It’s also weird, I’m not sure what the comment even means. Sony wasn’t at Gamescom, Xbox was and was the largest presence of any company that I saw.

Not to mention everyone complains about Xbox’s efforts in Europe, yet they have literally moved the E3 show floor experience to Europe now that E3 doesn’t exist.

It might sound conspiracy theory like but I really don’t think Xbox want to outsell PlayStation in the console dept. That might have been a thing before ABK but now it isn’t. Outselling Sony just limits them with regulators and so the fall back is dominating in a different way and in revenue and profits. Phil Spencer has said they lose to the tune of $200 per console so I would expect PC and platforms they don’t necessarily have to take the brunt of that loss to be their focus. The next gen hybrid thing I think will address the console situation, exclusives and so on much clearer.
