Like a little pc that sits under your TV? That would be interesting.
I think the question would be what is the real differentiator between a console and a PC. A Steam Deck is effectively a console, yet it runs games from Steam and you can even load Windows on it and run any game that works on Windows.
If someone were to make a version of Windows that boots into a custom front end, isn’t that still a PC?
Most are not going to abandon like seven years of Gamepass/Xbox UI/Xbox Controller etc. for late ports. And if they valued what PS was offering more they would be there already.
Sony could patch in hardware detection to block it, but it could raise issues with EU or CMA. Imagine if one handheld vendor could pay publisher to lockout others. Or it could be argued on grounds of emulation - if Proton can run Windows games on linux, why can’t XBW (Xbox subsystem for Windows) run Windows games on Xbox?
360 was different architecture. Having to emulate x86 (not even x64) on it wouldn’t been optimal. Even emulating 360 arch on modern systems is not perfect.
I don’t think we are ever going fully day 1 on all platforms. The fact that they are apparently still keeping some kind of exclusivity period even for a Bethesda game shows they still think there is value in keeping those games exclusive to their platform, even if just for a few months.
I still think that, no matter what people want to believe, that it really is, and really will be a case by case basis. I have a feeling that every game is different and will be released on different time schedules.
Also, sales are heavily front loaded, even more today than it was a few years ago, especially for single player games. 6 months is more than enough time and the hype for Indy, due to the movie already being released and not having performed really well, is also dying quickly. So in a case by case analysis, for this game specifically, probably makes even more sense to releases elsewhere as fast as possible.
Doom: The Dark Ages disagrees.
One does not mean all / “fully”.
Doom has always been multiplatform. I would imagine if there is another Wolfenstein it will be multiplat day and date as well.
This is one of the reasons that I think all this makes sense when that new console comes out. The problem here is this dicourse continues to happen and in some manner hurt the brand especially since Xbox is not taking the initiative to control the messaging and instead allow the hate media and doom and gloomers to control it. They need to find a better way to message.
I wouldn’t be so sure. We’ve seen the Xbox lose half of its base before. This time, even the most die-hard fans are abandoning the brand. I participate in Xbox fan groups and the discouragement is general, with a good number thinking about migrating to the PC or PS in the next generation.
Old games won’t be what will keep people on a system. I’ve had the Xbox since the 360 and I’ll probably only buy the next one if it has Steam.
Otherwise, I’ll migrate to the Playstation, even though I don’t like Sony but I’ll be on the console that will receive all the games.
Sony shouldn’t port anything to the Xbox and its increasingly smaller base. It will easily dominate the home console market.
Remember that the Xbox’s image was already completely worn out with the casual public and it will only get worse with this policy. I’m not a Microsoft shareholder, so I don’t see any advantage in watching the Xbox lose its audience and attract less and less interest from developers.
Tom Warren on the topic of port considerations:
That’s not strictly true, there are plenty of upcoming Xbox games that haven’t been considered for PS5 ports.
Microsoft Xbox move is certainly a risky one that I think will pay huge dividends for all if they can make it work. The thing is how they navigate to get there. The brandcould take such a beating and end up limping into nextgen but I think they are aware of all the discourse and the effect it’s having. Even at the business update Phil said he see’s exclusives being less of a thing in 5 years. I do think they need the consoles to stay relevant for sometime as for me I’d say just go PC. PS6 won’t cut it.
I find it amazing that you have basically no data/trends/facts to back up any of your predictions. Basically means nothing to me.
Obviously speaking from a personal view point, i’m so comfortable in the Xbox ecosystem that I don’t think any PS exclusives would make me shell out £400 for another console. So long as Xbox still keeps getting the big games then i’ll likely stick with their next console as well (cases like Wukong and BG3 hopefully don’t keep happening next gen).
With regards to Indiana Jones, when we heard they negotiated an exclusive deal at the time i guess we all assumed it meant full exclusive though i’m curious if it was always a timed exclusive deal? I have no idea how these things work but would Xbox pay an exclusive deal with Disney only to go back and say actually we want a shorter exclusivity window? Or did Disney have a hand in things and it was always going to come out on PS5 at some point?
One thing i will say is announcing a PS5 version at Gamescom before it even hits Xbox/PC would be very very weird in my opinion. So i’m also wondering whether this genuinely is their plan or is it another case of insiders getting their less than positive news out there to dominate the discourse.
They literally announced a couple of months ago that Xbox has more users, including more console users, than ever before.
People need to stop getting their “news” from Twitter.
I’m seeing reactions on social media about how Xbox once again is missing a huge launch of a game, and that certainly can’t be denied. I didn’t see this coming at all with Wukong but holy shit. They are missing out on this now.
Sure it’s still coming, but once it does I bet the immense hype right now will be long gone then. And whatever the reason is, I just sincerely hope this shit stops with next gen. Hopefully with whatever the next Xbox is it decreases chances of very unfortunate situations such as these happening.
This is going to be the 300th time Ive said this to you, but you really need to get off social media. Permanently.
It’s true though, this can’t be denied. It’s very unfortunate, no lies there.
I’m not nearly as much on sm as I used to, but I won’t fully quit it.
Some of y’all are way too invested in this stuff
