Leony know if it fits here, but I saw lots of ads for PS5 with 100$ rebate here in Canada during Black Friday and now all the way to Christmas. None of that is happening to Series consoles, which isn’t usually the case going by previous years. Really wondering why MS isn’t discounting their consoles this year and pushing ads for it, it’s usually when they sell the most consoles as well!
Amazon did a sale and it was sold out. Only Series S is available. Sony has to make investors happy after their meeting with the optimistic future, hence the sales. Not to mention, Year over Year is going to be huge decrease if they don’t push the sale now. PS Plus already looks like it will have a large drop, can’t afford the same for hardware.
If they sold out, wouldn’t that mean that stock was quite low though? For PS5 it’s at all retailers. If they could afford it previous years then it should still be possible this year as well. Those consoles are barely mid gen.
It’s about demands. A while back, people went to resort to Renewed version to get the console. PS has sent truckload since they are on sale and consumers would want one for the holiday. In Japan, for example, sold better or rather just as good as old days because of sales. Before, it would be more than half of it each week. The problem is Pro will suffer a lot, especially in Japan. But you got to sell what you got to sell.
Agree Nick mentioned on the pod last week with grubb PlayStation attach themselves to sports constantly attaching the PlayStation splash to adverts like NBA2K on channels like ESPN
They hit the casual mark constantly that’s how you become the defacto console brand, not appealing to the hardcore but the casuals that are into sports that might only play AAA games fifa and COD and kids that are watching their favourite football player or darts like littler and think if he’s into Xbox I want to be into Xbox like him.
It was a perfect time, with darts now so BIG with kids and adults alike. It only would have been for a few weeks too
Xbox could have pushed home what a great deal an Xbox Series Console with Game Pass was during the Christmas and Bank holidays during the adverts for the darts on SKY.
It was a massive missed opportunity
Like I said before I wished someone like you was at the top of Xbox PR because you get it.
Agreed, but I think you also get it too. Many of us get it. To us it seems to natural and sensical because we’ve seen it over the past 35 years and it works.
I’d like to think that the marketing race between SEGA, Nintendo, and then PlayStation (which was able to outspend the other 2 in this area) created this blueprint.
I realize that advertising has changed drastically in this time period but with MS able to invest a lot into growth in the form of buying companies but not in terms of buying a Superbowl ad, it makes a lot of people scratch their heads.
Like, wouldn’t an investment in GTA 6 marketing, along with Game Pass perks increase MS’s stock?
I could be really out of touch with the business side of things if it made no impact. Maybe it doesn’t.
TV advertising still counts for a lot otherwise none of the big established companies would be doing it. They all use modern forms of advertising as well as the old forms like TV and magazines after all…
We see the talk of how no one watches TV anymore, so why was Activision advertising COD on TV during the winter?
Xbox really should look into running advertisements during big sporting events because that’s when you get a lot of people/families around the TV be that in the house or pubs.
Agreed. I also think movie theatre ads are under-utilized.
That said, I’m sure many will look at us and say, " Don’t you think a trillion dollar company knows what it’s doing?" in terms of marketing, but I think it’s perfectly fair to say that Microsoft isn’t that good at marketing or advertising. Their brand isn’t very popular. Not just terms of coolness but in terms of reliability and quality.
The Xbox has been a bright spot in that regard. At one point it was seen as very cool and apart from the red ringing of death, a pretty reliable and high quality product.
On YouTube I get recommended videos where young people react to Halo’s advertising. I skim through some of those videos and I have to say the advertising for that game was incredible, and these young people who have never seen them before seem to agree.
There are other home runs including the Xbox 360s “Jump In” campaign.
I’ve got one last hot take here: I don’t think the positive reception from Xbox fans to the “This is an Xbox” campaign is rooted in the message of the campaign itself… I think people are just happy to see Xbox actually do some advertising. That it’s been such a quiet brand that it’s nice for them to see them reminding us that they’re still alive.
Advertising to the mainstream might not result in massive game sales as PlayStation have found compared to console sales but if game pass has a high attachment rate to consoles as we’re lead to believe why not attract the casual market who only play fifa Cod Fortnite at least you’re hitting the gamepass subs income especially if they’re putting COD there yearly.
I think this is marketing related so I’ll say it here, how was such an amazing looking game like Doom The Dark Ages not at the biggest gaming show TGA? Because wow, it looks amazing and it’s coming so soon, also Ninja Gaiden but I get it, they couldn’t have everything there, Dark Ages though, looking like a goty.
COD and Indy were advertised during many, many sports games. Starfield as well. And there have been gamepass ads during sporting events. So, I really don’t see your point.
