Xbox Game Studios |OT9| How many games would a game studio make if a game studio could make games?

I think Gears will be greeted with a bigger bang now because the feel around Xbox is so much better that people won’t just downplay it straight away.

I honestly think if certain games that came out on XB1 were released now, they would get a better reception.

Very nice to see the positive reviews for Grounded. I’m happy for Obsidian. One of these days I’m gonna check it out. Just not sure if I want to join my buddies or just solo it.

Didn’t Gears 5 get pretty good reviews ?

Yeah but it felt like after launch nobody cared at all outside of the usual die hard Gear MP players

The steam numbers were absolutely awful compared to most XGS games, I think it peaked around 10k players which is really bad for a big cinematic TPS like Gears

I’m not talking scores I mean more like general vibe and hype, but yeah it got great scores a 84 MC. If I remember right most people were like yep it’s a gears game and weren’t hyped for it.

My point was because there is genuine excitement, hype and hope around Xbox compared to back then that it bleeds into the games.

Being a part of the XB1 gen definitely didn’t help but I feel most of it came down to it just being another Gears game, people are tired of the formula at this point and it’s barely evolved from 2006

Do you think they’re better off cutting out the MP parts ? Or is that a bridge too far ?

Yeah won’t lie it’s probably a bit of both, anyway I have high hopes for the next Gears I think they’ll do a lot of new stuff.

I feel the MP in it’s current form will never attract a big casual audience, it’s too much for a casual player to get into but if you water that down which Gears 5 did to an extent, you just piss off the hardcore players

I don’t think cutting MP is the solution but if they want a bigger MP community they’ll need to do something different

Personally though it’s the single player that needs to evolve more than anything, it’s been the same encounters/slow walking sections/knee high cover systems since 06, it needs a big shakeup

Some games can get away with barely changing and still staying popular but Gears just doesn’t seem to be one of them

It’ll be interesting to see what they bring to the table.

Hopefully they break the silence soon !

The thing is there are people who want Gears to stay the same. So, I think a middle ground to please as many people as possible would be to have two separate games:

  • Gears Online. Keep the Gears formula but only have PvP modes and maybe Horde and other stuff, support this as live service.

  • Gears story-driven focused game, called Gears 6 or something else even. Continue the story but present it in a newcomer friendly way. Reboot and overhaul the foundation completely. Have it single player with co-op option as usual, but nothing more. I think this part has the potential to reenergize Gears and make it hugely popular again.

Yeah, I think at this stage it should follow Halo route and separate campaigns and multiplayer into separate games. Make multiplayer F2P and make campaigns into a separate 40-60$ games.

While playing team DM in MW2 beta was just alright, same old, campers, bunny hoppers I did find plenty enjoyment in the Invasion mode, really cool. And I really like the small things such as being able to jump from a roof onto a ladder on another building, or parachute to a building with a open window and sure enough you can climb in.

Even if the multiplayer isn’t as big as Halo’s multiplayer I do think the Gears multiplayer is still fun and important. Perhaps they could make the multiplayer free to play to get a larger audience.

That would be a massive mistake. Gears is huge in Mexico and South America and the multiplayer is what keeps the community alive for years between games, not to mention the (admittedly smaller than Halo) professional leagues.

Imagine the esport mega event MS could have once they get ABK, COD, Halo, Gears, Overwatch, AoE, Hearthstone, Warzone, Starcraft/Warcraft and I’m sure theres probably more like KI and so haha.

I have been advocating for ages that Microsoft need to consolidate their events into a huge one. Imagine all of that + all the potential partners that might join too.

I’m more so saying Gears Mp should be it’s own game as an on going service rather than putting more stuff on The Coalition’s plate.

Yeah they could easily have a big event, they’ll own MLG too and they already own esports engine. They could do some cool shit and this could be an event where they showcase updates for all their esport GaaS titles.

Start the big 3 day weekend event with a 1 hour game showcase which announces new titles focused on esports from 1st party and 3rd party, game pass news for these sorts of titles and updates for the current titles out in the wild. Then after the hype showcase is done thats when the esports event starts.

Yeah, they will have a lot of opportunities. Imagine streaming them via Netflix for example…
