Xbox Game Studios |OT9| How many games would a game studio make if a game studio could make games?

lol incredibly subjective. and there is nothing wrong with stop motion comic style that they nailed imo.

Publishing unique, interesting games that other people aren’t making is not a problem. Just because they aren’t necessarily for everyone doesn’t mean they aren’t worthwhile or worth investing in.

I dont remember them announcing anything like that .

Game Pass launched only a year before old Telltale was shut down and back then it wasn’t what it is now (day one releases, big third party deals etc). I don’t think the original Wolf 2 was ever announced for Game Pass.

Similarly, new Telltale hasn’t said anything about new Wolf 2 being on Game Pass or anything.

Clearly I just imagined that then lol

Tell Me Why, Flight Sim, Ori 2. Great games. Looking forward to seeing their games with Avalanche and IOI.

XGSP is looking for quirky, unusual or indie games and multiplayer / co-op games mainly since the beginning of the gen. Makes sense for Game Pass.

The comic style might be something you get used to while playing, but the writing is eh.

I wonder if INTERIOR/NIGHT can become become the new Quantic Dream (with a multiplayer and a casual twist and without the controversy) if they were acquired and evolve with bigger budget and resources. I loved Heavy Rain, Beyond Two Souls and Detroit and Caroline Marchal seems to be a talented person. I love Supermassive games as well.

Plus you have Ninja Theory also based in England (Cambdridge) and which focuses on mature storytelling too.

From LinkedIn, it seems they are around 50 people.

I think they’re going to studios with ambitious, risky or dream projects that they couldn’t make with multiplatform publishers and telling them we’ll fund and support it for you in return for publishing and IP rights etc. A lot of the time those dream projects could be the next big thing/s.

i mean, they have ID@Xbox. that’s not what people expect from XGS Publishing.

well… if this “makes sense for Gamepass” Idk. i wish they would also bet on “blockbusters” again. like Mass Effect or Gears of War in the 360 era.

It wasn’t even just the 360 during the first half of the Xbox One generation they published games like Sunset Overdrive, Killer Instinct, Dead Rising, Ryse,Quantum Break, etc.

Those games are too expensive to make and don’t generate the recurring revenue. I personally expect such type of games from their first party though. But Microsoft does not force anyboody to make any type of games so we will get a diverse set of games.

Technically KI was Xbox Live Arcade title

Since when is MS not “betting” on blockbusters this gen lol? Holy moly, you guys love to overreact.

Actually, it is. It’s that approach which gave us Ori, arguably the best Xbox exclusive game/series of last generation. With all of the acquisitions, Xbox doesn’t need XGS Publishing to be getting the big AAA games, as those games are now being made internally (although they are still doing Contraband, Kojima’s project, Project Dragon and others).

The value in XGS Publishing is in finding unique games, whether they are big or small, from experienced teams or first time studios, that appeal to certain audiences and find success on Game Pass. You never know what is going to be the next big thing, and Publishing taking risks on less obvious projects is how you maintain the vibrancy of the industry and the Game Pass ecosystem.

TLDR: The blockbusters are now being made by internal studios, so XGS Publishing can get more wild and interesting.

And they burned money with those. The want to take it internally this time around, and more acquisitions is what would get more like them.

Why are people so obnoxious about games they don’t want to play or like, cool you don’t like the game, it doesn’t suddenly mean Microsoft are pivoting to these sorts of games now.

Game pass and frankly Xbox needs these sorts games if they really want those 3B gamers. I can see this sort of game being great on Twitch with an audience that can interact.

Not everything is going to be made for you and that is ok you will recover from it as there are more than enough games to play that come from 1st party AND 3rd party.

I don’t believe a single soul who says they don’t have any games to play.

People are kinda dumb.

As Dusk Falls looks great, Int./Night should probably be acquired.

It is perfectly possible not to have the games to play if there has not been released a game that people wanted to play. Like, I want big WRPG soo I am waiting for Starfield :man_shrugging: I can replay Skyrim again of course  I am actually curioous how Starfield will doo because a lot of people love western fantasy, but big budget space games are rare.

A lot of hardcore folks want Xbox to be “Playstation but with Microsoft budget”. It is an understanble position though if you spend a lot of time in the online communities where most of it is dominated by Playstation, thus making Playstation games are the “real” games.

Add to that the fact that Sony does not make small games in general - their own studios seem to prefer working on the games with high fidelity graphics rather than being inventive and Sony in general tend to pursue such games. It might change overtime with Sony pivoting to GaaS, but for now hardcore folks want “Xbox to be Playstation but with M$”. From Microsoft’s internal studios (and even deals) we for example won’t see third person games with great graphics until the end of 2023 at least.

Even when Xbox has those games, they won’t count, case in point: Gears already is that, but it doesn’t count. Some people are already discounting Hellblade 2.

It won’t end.
