“Gamers will understand, developers just need to be transparent”
Gamers:
I just don’t think you have a realistic understanding of what it takes to accomplish the list of “easy” things you provided.
Its like watching a basketball game and saying “all you have to do is make the shot!”
You can’t argue delusion.
It is easy though. I’ve been gaming my whole life. I have a good idea how I would run things and I trust my grasp of the current gaming zeitgeist. Lately Xbox is moving too slow. It’s not that Phil Spencer can “snap his fingers” and make a new Fallout appear tomorrow however when Todd Howard says Fallout isn’t even on Xbox’s radar that’s a big problem because games take a long time to make. A studio should’ve been found to make a Fallout game. Even if it started production today that’s already a mistake, it should’ve been day 1 greenlit after the acquisition. I don’t want this conversation to get hung up on Fallout specifically it’s just an easy example because of Todd Howard’s comments about it not being worked on yet.
We’ve all been gaming for years. I trust many of us have lots of good ideas, let’s not go around trying to shut down ideas as “trolls”, it’s bad for discourse.
Let them leave fo76 on old engine. It doesnt need to migrate into anything.
You want banjo dead and to focus on a limited platformer like crash. Get the hell out of here. Banjo on n64 better than any crash game ever was or will be.
Maybe too harsh to Banjo From Xbox’s perspective though they’ve wanted a permanent kid friendly mascot for so many years that it would be weird if they finally got one in Crash Bandicoot and they didn’t utilize him in a big way. At least put out a couple Crash games before going back to Banjo. Banjo himself is a product of Xbox wanting that mascot so bad that it almost felt forced how hard they tried to make him relevant. Rare too wanted to prove they didn’t need Nintendo’s Donkey Kong ip. At the end of the day only Crash was really able to break that Nintendo/ Sonic the Hedgehog mascot curse.
I’m in a very similar boat. I would like to see the main xbox show be gameplay of stuff expected in the next twelve months and trailers for the following twelve months. Then throughout the year they can do shows with deep dives of the next upcoming game along with gameplay for games coming to gamepass in the very near future
Holy shet didnt realize Indiana Jones had over 175k!
COD MW2 R has 350k+…MS must be salivating looking at those metrics.
Edit: likes on twitter.
What is that?
Ups sorry for not being specific!
Twitter likes…yeah not that important but just wanted to share them.
Oh yeah. I don’t discount those metrics, but they’re probably just data to them that doesn’t necessarily reflect revenue and player engagement in game. They’re probably more to do with marketing.
Do you even know if Todd wants to give Fallout 5 or even a spin off to another studio? Todd surely wants to oversee Fallout 5’s development, but he’s a very busy man. What studio would even be trusted with something like a new vegas 2? The only obvious choice is Obsidian. Do they want to do it? Can they even do it? They are already working on 4 projects. You can’t just conjure up staff out of nowhere. You clearly have absolutely no clue what you’re talking about, and it’s clear why you don’t run a game studio, let alone a publisher, god forbid a console platform.
The thing with Avowed is, well for me, can’t speak for others is that Obsidian called it their next big RPG. So without even including Sponger’s information, that sounds like a bigger game than they’ve previously had, bigger than ToW. And it very well still could be, but when Jez says those things, even if it’s just him speculating (based on what he’s seen, maybe heard too?) that changes my perspective and expectations a little. He could have said the exact opposite about the scope too, but didn’t.
Even if it’s “just” like ToW in terms of scope, that can still mean a huge improvement over how these locations look and feel, bigger budget, so more variety, more detail, more depth and more dense. But I saw people on Reddit really thinking this would be Obsidian’s answer to TES, and I kinda get that but Obsidian never did say this themselves.
Maybe the true next big RPG after Starfield will be what inXile is working on. Although going by the trailer of ToW2 it sounded like they are cranking up every thing about the IP, so that could potentially be really big as well. Just have to wait and see.
Speaking of inXile, I wonder how far along they are and when it gets officially announced because that too…most information is from insiders.
Obsidian even historically rarely went after huge scale. But they are much better at making much more coupled worlds with deeply connected plot.
Nobody knows anything, stop trying to second guess everything when 9 times out of 10 you are wrong.
I don’t think you’re a troll, I think you’re naive and don’t understand the limitations and complications associated with what you’re talking about.
I can answer most of your counterpoints with a simple truth about game development: gamers don’t care who makes the games of their favorite ip so long as the quality is good. I often use the example of Super Smash Brothers being made by Namco because Nintendo was too busy and nobody even noticed or cared that Nintendo didn’t make it. Call of Duty is constantly getting new teams and developers to make games and spin-offs and it also remains popular. New studios taking on iconic ip is common practice in the gaming world. Also most gamers can’t tell you who exactly makes the games, that’s just the way it is.
Xbox gave Bethesda 7.5 billion reasons why games like Fallout can be given to a side studio. I don’t accept your opinion that Xbox should wait until the 2030’s to do something with Fallout.
Just to bring this back to my original point. Members of Xbox Era have too small of expectations for Xbox. It’s always small ips, long waits, and excuses with you guys. Demand better. It’s fun speculating about what Xbox should do as their dream lineup or what you would do if you were in charge. Try it sometimes. Reduce bad faith straw man’s. Stop with the insults. Provide counterpoints. Resist “group think”.
since both Quakecon and Gamescom are in the same month i hope for another interview on the former and more gameplay slice at the latter regarding Starfield. not sure about new project reveal from the Zenimax studios at Quakecon (like the next Doom or something) because i’m sure Phil also mandate all gaming divisions to not reveal stuff that won’t come out for the next 12 months this year.
well except maybe for TGA because if Avowed (and or Hellblade) is slated for 2nd half of 2023 then there’s no way they’ll wait for next (not) E3 showcase just for the next reveal of the title.
You cant just get any team to make a FO game or whatever game you want to base your argument on but especially a FO game, the scale needs to huge and outside of BGS, Obsidian are the only ones who have shown they are capable and that was with BGS engine and tools and your CoD example is terrible considering the only ones people have considered good in years was IW’s MW reboot
“As long as the game is good nobody cares who makes it” you’re absolutely right but thats assuming the game actually ends up good
It’s fine to have high expectations, I do too and using the example of Obsidian, with something like Avowed, I dont want AA scale, I want this to finally be Obsidian with a budget but the things you’re saying simply aren’t based in reality in regards to how game dev and production works
