Xbox Game Studios |OT7| Killer News Here!?

hey if Obsidian can say “soon” and it not actually be soon, then Fargo can say “for a while” and it be sooner than expected.

I loved both Ori games, but the founder of Moon has always been pretty arrogant in a way that I don’t think will serve them well long term in the industry.

They guy had already an odd behaviour even before Ori 2 release, I remember very nasty comments, it’s clear he regretted signing for MS at a certain point and he never made it a mistery. I don’t get his statements, under Nintendo and Sony his games would have been locked even more and under any big 3rd party publisher, a great funding would have come together with an iron grip on development (Activision, TakeTwo, EA, etc…), those publishers are hands-free only with their smaller indie labels (PD, EA Originals, etc…), but with a much smaller budget. I seriously doubt next Moon project will have more budget from PD than Xbox. They guy maybe wanted AAA treatment without strings attached imo…that doesn’t exist in real world.

Iconic, to be in the crowd would’ve been amazing and little did these people know it would be the last time to be in a venue like that for like 2 years

E3 2022 might be in person, fingers crossed. This TGA will be in person too which is nice.

If Avowed’s not at TGAs, then that makes the whole “soon” thing so damn strange since soon would mean June 2022 since Microsoft doesn’t do events post TGA and pre-E3 unless it’s a console launch year.

Obisdian : Avowed Soon !

Us : Really ?

Well, when you’ve been working on a game since like 2017, 1 year could be considered soon lol

  1. Moon Studio leader comments are absurd and I reckon that bridge is burned so we can move on from any potential “acquisitions” there.

  2. Personally I think Ori 2 closed off the story well and see no need for a sequel.

Honestly before those comments were even made Moon CEO never gave me the impression studio is for sale. I think he said countless times he doesn’t want to be acquired and appreciates studio independence. However, I just hope relationship with Microsoft is good enough for next game to launch on gamepass. However, I am having my doubts on that part

That would be up to Private Division, and their business model is a pretty traditional retail model, so I doubt it.

Different situation, but Outer Worlds was published by them and Microsoft was able to get gamepass. However, it was probably due to Microsoft owning the studio before the game released, so was able to cut a deal.

Probably cause Microsoft poured some money into ToW lol.

Yeah, I really don’t think we can look at how The Outer Worlds was handled and extrapolate a plan forward from that.

My position on the Moon situation is similar to how others have felt: we don’t know what kind of business partnership occurred between Moon and Xbox, but if you’ve signed with a first-party publisher, I’m not sure why one would expect to publish their games on multiple platforms. That said, I assume his stance might partially come from the idea that his studio had created two awesome games, and he just wanted more people to be able to experience them…and frankly, Xbox was the least popular console platform, so of course his games would be missing out on the larger install bases. Ori WOTW was my 2nd favorite game of last year, but it absolutely did not ship in a stellar state, and that was with only optimizing for One S/X and PC. Now they want to go fully multiplatform, without the resources of a first-party publishing team? I remain skeptical of the result. I’m sure the game will be great, they’ve proved themselves of that much, but their technical prowess remains uncertain. Thomas wants Moon to remain independent, and considering the unconventional nature of the studio’s set-up, I might imagine the rest of the team feels similarly? Would they have made a great fit inside XGS? Probably, but if it’s not what they want, then I say just continue to be great business partners and don’t complain about those relationships on Resetera.
