I don’t think they sit still for 3 years waiting for job positions to fill. They have to do a lot of the concepts and basics for the game at least, and configuring their engine for what they see for their vision. Later on individual things get added in, edited out, and optimized and reconfigured, etc, as positions fill.
Im sure a lot of technical work, designs, concepts and stuff had already been done prior to the 2020 reveal which makes sense to me. 6 year dev cycle of 2017 to 2023.
Of course we could take the Hindle route and say nothing existed but proof of concept until the reveal and the trailer was just a recruiting pitch (which it is too).
This could be too if not for the fact that it’s Playground. These guys were only founded in 2010, and by 2012 they already made a game that had to be pitched to Turn10 first and then MS, and it turned out to be a banger.
Imagine the possibility of seeing a actual reveal of Fable next year, along with Avowed. I’ve given up on seeing Avowed this year, better to just assume it will be a E3 thing.
I’m thinking 2024. It’s a whole new team, most of time some since it launched staffing up, first game together and first game in this rebooted series – all systems and engine work from the ground up and nothing to build off. And it’s a flagship franchise, they can’t mis step.
Given XBGS has a tonne of things that can launch in 2023, even if it was possible for them to push Fable out by then giving them another year to polish till it gleams wouldn’t be a bad idea.
I have still hope for Avowed at Anniversary Event/TGA, buy yeah, “soon” has become my most hated word in gaming because it really means shit and devs/publishers make a wrong use of it.
The engine work is not handled by the Fable team, the engine work is primarily handled by the Turn 10 team that have worked to adjust the engine to be used by different genres.
Crazy to think that while one or more may slip to 2024, there’s an outside chance that Avowed, Fable, and Perfect Dark all release in 2023. That’s not even counting other possibilities like Hellblade 2, The Coalitions next game etc. Xbox is stacked!
