I doubt it, they want to keep the Bethesda label, it’s worth it, because it has a long and esteemed history in the game industry. The problem is not the Xbox logo, but the constant asking by a large subset of the gaming industry, mostly because MS messagging about this is weakened by the infamous “legacy” thing and those two “honored” timed deals. I hope that one year from now, all legacy and contracts will have been honored and we can move on.

And by keeping Bethesda outside of XGS, that means a lot of people get to keep their jobs, right? Which is definitely a good thing.

I don’t mind them not being under XGS, even though when I talk about XGS I talk about Bethesda too, so in my mind I place them all under one roof.

Not worried about exclusivity in the long term, Starfield is already announced and for sure TES VI will too when it’s time for that.

It’s implicit. Zenimax games were, until the MS acquisition, multiplatform.

If you follow the gaming news, the story that Sony was going around every third party publisher and offering absurd money to take their games off Xbox for a year were circulating in summer 2020 – it was just before the launch of the consoles.

This wasn’t just ‘insiders’ reporting this, but big outlets too.

There was no long-held plan for these games to be PS5 exclusive, there was no funding of development. Sony was trying to basically kill off Xbox by taking every game they could off their platform just before launch.

These deals don’t happen overnight. It obviously when revealed had no deal attached. But it might have been ‘implicit’ but release platforms were never stated. If you’re looking for cash for your game you might be thinking about deals. And whilst we heard reports of timed exclusivity being a thing both console makers were trying to do in 2020 that doesn’t mean you were getting a live to the minute thing. Discussions for these things go on all the time often for a year or more - and that’s how it often works. If you were Bethesda you were waiting for the best offer for your titles. We know that MS were aware during the acquisition talks of Sony’s interest and deals - so one can assume that the deals were done by say early 2020.

My point is that they never actually said ‘coming to Xbox and PS and PC’ or whatever for the game. Perhaps deliberately.

I think you’re expecting too much, besides with smart delivery and one version of Halo across generations, how can they do things like campaign expansions without causing the base Xbox One to blow to pieces in five years time? I don’t believe this whole 10 year thing, I think Infinite is a transitional title for Halo and a sequel will come before this generation is done. Same was said about Destiny and we’ve had two games already.

Have they actually said there won’t be a brand new title in 10 years? Or are people just assuming that

I think it depends on the reception. The ‘10 years’ thing may have been thrown into question the second the reaction to the 2020 reveal landed. They’ve spent the last year trying to salvage but if what they launch does not stun people, I suspect that if they honour the ‘10 year support’ the updates are going to get less and less significant after the usual few years support.

If it doesn’t hit big, then they aren’t going to want to be tethered to the thing like a ball and chain for a decade.

My hope is that they can keep Joseph Staten onboard and give him a Halo game to helm from the ground up. Maybe drop the Slipspace engine if its not delivering what they hoped it would, switch to either idTech or Unreal 5, and launch Halo Infiniter to be the real 10 year supported Halo game.

I’m 1000% expecting a Halo Infinite: ODST with him being the lead for it, Xbox Series S|X and PC only.

Calm down guys, MCC launched in 2014 and it’s still actively supported in 2021. Yeah, we can make the case it was abandoned between 2015-2017, but it’s still a 5+ years of support, the major victim of MCC new life was Halo 5. Halo Infinite will be ok, multiplayer is the most important thing for a F2P title and 343i knows its shit with mp, I’m still hesistant about campaign because the silence about it is deafening now, I think it’s the only fall/holiday big game of which we saw NOTHING about single player since a 1+ year, it’s a fact.

I think the engine is a big question.

When you look at idTech and the next gen upgrade to Doom Eternal, where you have stunning graphics, ray traced reflections and a rock solid 60fps…

… and then you look at Slip Space, that had horrible issues with pop in early on and even with the upgrades is not delivering graphically stunning results. Beyond this – as they have gone 100% radio silent on the idea of RT being incorporated – you get the sense that RT and 60fps with that engine is just not on the cards…

Hope I am wrong, I just wonder…

If the engine is good, they can keep improving and pushing the game for a long time. If it turns out to be an engine designed for Xbox One that just isn’t delivering effective results for next gen compared with other tech MS now owns, then it may be worth just cutting their losses and starting again.

I think the issue is not related to the engine itself, but the evident development hell and bad management of 343i before last year reshuffle and Staten arrival. The game was not nearly ready, I beg to differ mp tech test blew out of the water in terms of fidelitt BF and COD, which showed shiny trailers, but real tests were not nearly as crisp as Halo Infinite. The comparison with idtech is a bit unfair, id software is simply the most technically proficient studio in existence, they invented fps and all shooters engines are offshoots of their idtech in one way or another.

Yeah, the concept looks really cool.

Multiplayer looked decent yeah, not mind blowing but perfectly acceptable. Multiplayer maps do use baked lighting though, so this doesn’t entirely set my mind at rest regarding one of the biggest issues with the campaign reveal – the flatness of the real time lighting system and lack of global illumination to circumvent it.

I hope you’re right and the engine is all fine and its just poor management. But the longer they avoid showing campaign, the more I worry.

Well, even John from DF, who was one of the harsher critics of last year showing, promoted the new lighting of mp tech test, so it’s good. I can’t see many problems in limited mp maps, but I want to see it within an open ende map. They have been very transparent with the game development except campaign which is shrouded in secrecy, clearly because they fear the public reception after last year. I think the coolest thing they could do is a direct feed comparison (like the DF ones) between last year demo and the updated version.

I think you are really clutching at straws here. These sort of contracts don’t really leave doors open like this.

I hope not, I would like to see a complete story as part of initial campaign. There is tons of other ways they can go with the story and plenty of other enemies to fight

I’ve said a couple of times (not here I think though) that a really cool approach would be to start a demo exactly the same – same crash cut scene (hopefully with actual facial mocap this time!), same start to a mission, exact same game plan of the player until they get to the bit where he opens the map and puts a waypoint down.

This time he does a different way point and goes off in another direction and they diverge.

That would be a great way of showing a direct 1:1 comparison while also telegraphing the semi-open nature of the game and showing us some new areas.

PC GP from day one would partially squander PS timed exclusivity, moreover it’s technically still Xbox even if not on console, so it’s clearly forbidden until timed shit doesn’t lapse. I hope there is no surprise like RE8 contract, like Sony has 1st right of refusal of subscription and Xbox users don’t get GP one year from now, but later. It would be hilarious.
