I mean, they kinda did that with last year, no? Things like Halo: Infinite, Psychonauts 2, The Gunk, The Medium, CrossfireX, all with gameplay. And of course the stuff farther out. Yet I saw lots of people complaining.
But I do agree that they should do more outside of E3. Perhaps when the upcoming games are closer to release, they can give some of these games presentations of their own.
Xbox is just held to a different standard than the rest.
Eventually I just wanna see the most games they can show even if farther out. Sony does this and it fuels the hype machine in buildup to release so I hope xbox does the same with the internal studios if possible.
I really hope halo infinite takes a lot of inspiration from halo 3 with the final product. 14 years after release and I can still sit down for an hr or 2 at a time with the multiplayer. Same for the campaign. Iâve beaten it 6-8 times and Iâm currently replaying it with my daughter and we are having a blast.
Last yearâs showcase was fine but there was way too much CGI but on the positive side, they donât need to reveal any game that they believe wonât make 2021/2022 because they already did that with Everwild, Hellblade 2, State of Decay 3, Perfect Dark and Fable so we already have a great amount of long term games that were revealed with CGI.
Iâm not expecting to see any of the above five games I mentioned at E3 2021 which as long as I get gameplay for the 2021/2022 games, im perfectly fine with. Even the Project Typhoon/Omen games that are rumored to be at E3, if either or both are past 2022, then I hope they donât show them unless they have gameplay. They can wait until E3 2022 to reveal them.
If I get gameplay for Halo Infinite (campaign), Avowed, Forza Horizon 5, Wolfenstein III, Starfield and if the Omen game is ready, then great, I will be very happy and satisfied with their E3 2021 showcase because itâs still better than seeing games that are further out with nothing more than a CGI trailer.
I know some people are fine with CGI but im not one of those people. I would much rather wait an extra year to see the game if that means im getting gameplay and if not, then I will wait two years for a gameplay trailer that hypes me for the game because I can see how it plays and the mechanics of said game as opposed to a CGI trailer (like SOD 3 for example) that does nothing for me besides the fact that based on that im now expecting the game to look like that CGI trailer which I know itâs not and thus, why you donât show CGI.
At least show an in-engine game trailer because itâs much closer to what the game will actually end up looking like where as with CGI, itâs not even close.
Iâd be okay with that approach if they released Marvel style roadmap that tell me what theyâre working on and when to expect it. If they arenât doing it then cgi trailers are they way we find that stuff out so Iâd rather know than not know.
Honestly, im not a fan of a Marvel style roadmap because you would see nothing but logos and dates that 99% of the time will never happen. Plenty of Marvel/DC movies have been pushed back repeatedly so imagine games where itâs much harder and take much longer to complete.
I donât want to know what development studios are working on. I want them to surprise me but with a gameplay trailer. If they show CGI/in-engine cinematic trailer and then follow it up with a good gameplay trailer, then im okay because im not going to remember the cinematic trailer nor am I going to watch it a second time but I will watch the gameplay trailer numerous times.
Take the rumored Project Omen game from Arkane. I hope it is a Vampire game which it does seem to be but it would have been awesome to see it at E3 as a surprise and hopefully with gameplay. Now, im simply expecting it and if itâs not on the showcase then ugh.
But it is not necessary to wait that long for a gameplay trailer. Create a thin vertical slice of gameplay trailer when you know that the game is still in production. This does not require any game readiness. The God of War trailer for instance was shown when the game production was in its early days. The general public equates gameplay trailers with game readiness, but that is far from the true state of the game.
This is an acquired skill and requires practice. I hope Xbox adopts this too. Creating early vertical slices with gameplay.
The issue is that Sony might get a pass for showing things that are slightly different from the final gameplay reveal. Whereas Xbox is always under a magnifying glass.
I love the idea of showing cgi trailer with gameplay slice. This is something that both Sony and Nintendo do. The difference being Nintendo shows actual final gameplay most of the times.
Waste of resources. Xbox has enough studios to not waste resources creating vertical slices. Focus on creating a game and show it 6-12 months before release when creating a gameplay trailer is not taking away from game development.
That is one of the benefits of having a ton of studios, one the pipeline is going at least.
Yeah, if Microsoft can show games that are two years out with a 6-8 minute gameplay trailer like Sony did with God of War at E3 2016, that would be awesome but they rarely if ever do that.
Itâs because Sony more times than not wows people when they reveal their games. Even games I donât give two shits about like Returnal or Demonâs Souls impressed me because first and foremost, itâs gameplay, thereâs minimal technical issues if any at all and they both look good and great respectively.
The last time I was impressed with a Microsoft game was at E3 2018 which I re-watched yesterday (excellent showcase by the way and gave me the most games last generation between first and third party with 11 totalâŚshit was insane)âŚanyway, that game was Gears 5. That wowed me because it was gameplay and it looked amazing. Characters repelling down from the helicopter into that cavern with all that foliage and water, oh manâŚshit looked great.
So im hoping that for example, the Omen or Avowed game has gameplay in two weeks and it wows me to where im impressed and saying, this shit looks great, day oneâŚhyped and canât wait!!! But im realistic and donât expect that to happen. Hope it does especially with the Omen game but I know better than to expect it as I have been burned way too many times so now, im just in the middle. Hoping for a lot of gameplay and a good overall showcase which if that happens will easily surpass the last two years so I will be happy and satisfied until next year when I expect Fable, Hellblade 2, etc.
Yeah, the mix of CGI/in-engine followed by gameplay actually comes from Horizon Zero Dawn at E3 2015 because thatâs what Sony did. I donât remember the cinematic trailer for shit but I remember the gameplay trailer which to be honest, is what I want to remember. lol.
While I agree that Sony does have stronger marketing, this isnât all Microsoftâs faultâŚwell not exactly. First of all Sony focuses on higher graphics and those games just market better. Itâs not a secret that graphics sell games because you can show off carefully selected parts of the game, graphics before they are âdowngradedâ, photo modes, still pictures, etc⌠Games that focus on gameplay and performance arenât as easy to sell. You can relay feel in a screenshot. Now maybe there is a case that Xbox needs more of these games, and they are coming.
Second, marketing hype doesnât just come from putting the product out there, it comes from the fanbase too. So a major component of the Sony hype comes from the fanbase running with it. They simply have more people to gush over reveals and the media follows along to cater to them so they can get those clicks. This is like the Superbowl or World Cup, sure there are commercials from the NFL and FIFA but the hype comes from all the people talking about it. Itâs the difference between hearing a song in your car and hearing the same song at a concert with 1000s of other people there screaming.
Specifically for Xbox, it would theoretically mean easier/cheaper Gamepass deals, possibly more 3rd party exclusive deals, and a lower chance 3rd party games skip Xbox completely.
The increasing mindshare argument is less about âimpressing journalistsâ or âsticking it to the Sony fanboysâ and more about hoping Xbox becomes more popular so a larger amount of games come to the platform easier. Especially since Gamepass is the focus and content for it is king.
Yeah but Avowed shouldnât be one of them in a year where from XGS we likely wonât be seeing a whole lot just yet. I get the whole not wanting to show games that are too far off, yet we will definitely see a game or two that wonât be 2022 and those wil likely be the CG trailers while Avowed may be actual gameplay.
The team is very confident, I would hope Xbox is too. Because Starfield is indeed their next RPG, I doubt weâre going to see a lot from the game. I think that spot is reserved for next year E3. So a look at another huge XGS would be so good. On the other hand weâve only had rumors about it, nothing official. It was two folks with a good track record.
Still hoping that a lot of Yiutubees, including reporters like Jason received fake info from Xbox, doubtful but would be so good.
I do recall seeing reports about a action adventure with robo dinos by GG a few days before the Sony E3 show happened. But those are probably the exceptions yeah.
Xbox has no mindshare? Why are they constantly top selling on steam then?
Xbox does nothing outside e3? Thats just absolutely not true. Why do you always forget Xbox shows? Like the recent showcase for Age of Empires 4. And we regularly/monthly get updates with shows (with gameplay!) about new content in Sea of Thieves, Minecraft and Forza. Always the same - doesnât count
To be fair, most people are not saying that Xbox has no mindshare. It seems to me that people think Xbox needs more positive mindshare. Which is completely true. Selling great numbers on Steam is undoubtedly a good thing which is generating goodwill.
Also, people arenât saying that Xbox does nothing outside of E3. Weâre saying they need to do more & better outside of E3. Inside Xbox was a terrible show which did nothing good for Xbox. Age of Empires doesnât interest me but if they did a good showcase dedicated to it⌠good! Thatâs what Iâm talking about! They need to start doing that with other games as well. Halo Infiniteâs updates on the website have been very nice but a âHalo Direct/State of Playâ type of thing would be even better.
Updates for already released games doesnât actually count, to be honest, because itâs not what people are talking about. Weâre talking about the way Xbox shows/markets/advertisers their new games. They need to do more & better. They need to start spreading the announcements out over the course of the year, instead of mostly focusing all of their attention on E3, which they undoubtedly do now.
I think making an Xbox Direct/State of Play of their own is the perfect way to do everything weâre asking for. It would allow them to stay in the news more often with cool announcements, which would generate goodwill & increase their positive mindshare over an extended period of time. To be completely honest & without trying to be rude, I think people denying that there is any problem at all are the ones doing this
