Xbox Game Studios |OT4| This is for Studio talk. Studios. It's the Studios OT. Studio talk here (Part 1)

Thanks…I guess? As long as it doesn’t hold things back it’s fine, but the compromises to the actual games to cram in things like splitscreen etc. is in my opinion unnecessary to make.

What compromises would you be talking about.

@ElPutoXD

Thanks for the video. At first, I was like, that’s not it but then it was. lol. Thanks. Added it to my YouTube favorites.

Welcome to XboxEra forums.

I’m also looking forward to seeing gameplay for Avowed. Need more after that 15 second clip a year ago.

Agreed. Plus, technically, there’s already a third - Forza Street. lmao.

I loved the two Steamworld games on Xbox, very excited to see what The Gunk is all about. Trailer looked nice but need to see more. E3 for sure.

I’d be wary of what you read in forums & on Twitter, pretty much as a rule.

Was the visual quality of the Gears of War games ever affected be the inclusion of split-screen?

It is my understanding that accomodating the option to play in splitscreen affects the overall quality of the games performance and visuals. It’s more taxing to have 2-4 screens at the same time so the whole game is kinda nerfed to also work in that environment.

How did you come to that understanding? Did anyone with a game development background ever suggest such a thing? I’d be interested to read any interviews or quotes you could provide a link for.

running 4 versions of the game is obviously more demanding than running a single game at 4x the resolution. You have 4x the io, 4x the cpu demand, and more besides. To pretend that splitscreen hasnt affected the development of halo infinite in any way would not be correct

Again, do you have any quotes or information from people in game development to back this up? Or is this just one of those “dude trust me” scenarios?

& again, has development of previous games been hampered by the inclusion of split-screen? Like for example, the entire mainline Halo franchise except 5, or the entire mainline Gears of War franchise?

Wasn’t Gears 5 the visual showcase game for Xbox this past generation? With split-screen?

I don’t have any perfect links to send. Do you have to the contrary?

It is my experience though that if you put in splitscreen in games without sacrificing things it runs like ass in that mode. And if it runs well, you have adapted the game for it.

The game is “nerfed” when in split-screen since it has to render the same game twice. I don’t have all the answers on this and I would love for a dev to explain this in greater detail, but I find it hard to believe that Halo would look significantly (if at all) better in single player if they had decided to not include split-screen. Halo always had split-screen and always looked and played great. I also have a hard time believing that a game with a budget likely north of $500 million would have a hard time making this feature work without compromising the overall game.

The way I see it, split-screen was dropped because it was just a pain in the ass to implement and simply wasn’t worth the time to invest in making it work properly. If you don’t want it, cool, but there are likely a lot of people (myself included) that want this feature and were incredibly excited when it was announced as returning to Infinite.

Clearly 343 thought it was important enough to put it back in the game, so regardless, it’s there. :grinning_face_with_smiling_eyes:

I’m not making any claims here. I’m asking you guys making the claims to back your claims up.

What evidence can I provide, except for every game that has ever released with split-screen?

Again, Gears 5?

So you are not claiming splitscreen has no impact on the game? Aight.

Anyway, since none of us can prove anything this is kinda pointless.

If you are right, I have zero problems with splitscreen btw.

If a game is running split screen, it’s obviously taxing the system because it has to render the game twice. So if you’re rendering the game between 2-4 times at the same time, yeah, it’s going to be at a lesser visual quality. Look at The Medium. They’re rendering two worlds at the same time. Same thing as split screen co-op. Always thought this was a known thing. Can’t run a game in multiple screens and not expect some compromises in return.

No, I haven’t made any claims. I’ve said that I love playing games split-screen & I’m glad 343 are bringing it back.

You guys are the ones making claims. None of you are backing your claims up with any evidence though, so yeah this is kinda pointless.

Ok then I misunderstood your posts. Splitscreen must be really important to you!

“One other reason is the limitations related to the hardware itself. With today’s advanced graphics, rendering the same image several times takes a huge toll on performance. In order for split screen to work, compromises have to be made, such as in various Call of Duty titles, where the framerate simply cuts in half when split-screen mode is activated.”

which is harder? running 1 copy of a game or running 4 copies?

This is a bit of a dumb hill to die on imo

Wait, at first I thought people meant Halo Infinite in general (whether you play solo in full screen or splirscreen) would have a lesser image quality and that sounded odd to me. I think it’s logical that visuals might not look as great in splitscreen compared to if you were playing the game on your own in full-screen.

Doesn’t matter to me, as long as the game overall in fullscreen doesn’t suffer from it I am fine with the addition of splitscreen.
