People entertain the idea because they see Netflix on fire sticks
With all the talk about Disney expanding their video game offerings by partnering with more people and Xbox talking about needing more E rated content, why isnât Xbox games studios working on Pixar titles being discussed?
There have been a couple of insiders that have said that microsoft is encouraging their newly acquired team, and their longer standin first party studios to have smaller incubation teams to make new things.
The first result of that was grounded from a small team at obsidian, which studio do you guys think will unveil a project by a small team next?
I dont know why but I have a suspicion that turn 10 is working on something, currently they have more employees than they have ever had before, with ~150 people on linkedIn, probably a little less than 200 in reality, irrc before forza motorsport 7 came out they had ~100 total employees. On the other hand they are working on more things currently, supporting playground from the tech side on both the forza horizon series and on fable, on top of developing forza motorsport.
What do you guys think?
imo the studios that xbox has arent a good fit for the sorts of games that make sense for pixar properties.
On the disney IP front I did wonder if microsoft might be able to sweeten the deal when licensing IP to disney by offerering to let disney+ users stream the games produced using the licensed IP from within the disney+ app. This benifits everyone, it lets microsoft get tons of âexclusiveâ games, even if they are also streamed to the disney+ app via xcloud, and disney gets features within its app that differentiate it from the competition. How neat would it be for the star wars section of Disney + to include star wars games that you can stream to your tv too? That would be awesome and make sense for all parties involved.
The other benefit for microsoft is that it acts as a trial for perspective game pass ultimate customers, if they like streaming the games over disney+ maybe they would consider gpu!
What about Mojang taking a page out of TTs book and doing Minecraft adventures in those universes.
Also interesting out of the box idea on unlocking more content, I like it.
Thatâs definitely the best way to go to keep the content coming to Gamepass. Having a variety of AAA/AA and more experimental stuff (and content in general) is the way to keep people subscribed.
In terms of the bigger studios, I think definitely Rare may have a little something on the side alongside Everwild and I have a feeling the Coalition might as well. Granted weâve not got Infinite out yet but i would love to see 343 come out with a maybe smaller scope Halo experience that maybe experiements with a few new things, similar to ODST perhaps (Would have loved a Hivebusters style expansion that focusâ on Blue Team for example).
It sounds like Turn 10âs âother thingâ may well be them helping out on Fable but i suppose you never know what else a small team there could be working on. I imagine having small teams able to work on things maybe outside of the expected franchise is a good way to keep staff feeling creative and able to try and experiement with new things.
Wouldnât it be kind of cool for MS to make a clone Ring Fit Adventures game where your a odst running around a Halo ring exercising along the way and fighting Elites, Grunts, Brutes and the like. Iâm half joking but If they made it I would play it.
Game Pass is NOT going on PlayStation or Switch nor should it. That would be a stupid dumb ass decision by Microsoft.
Microsoft must have all the ZeniMax games be exclusive to Xbox/PC regardless of the cost simply because if you want to get more people subscribed to Game Pass/Ultimate, you need great to excellent exclusive games and content.
Id argue that it is worse for Sony and Nintendo than it is Microsoft. How is it any different that making it available via a TV app?
Streaming to Switch will definitely happen somedayâŚ
TV app has nothing to do with the PlayStation or Switch platforms though. If youâre putting Game Pass on a competing platform, youâre helping that platform more than your own because youâre eliminating the need for your own platform.
If Game Pass is on Playstation or Switch it will be through streaming. Again, no different than playing on a TV app.
In one of the interviews last year Phil Spencer did say they would be open to discussions of having GP on PS and Switch, as long as they accept a full Xbox ecosystem on there.
As a huge, huge fan of Xbox as the console I really donât want to see this happen though. So I guess I hope Sony and Nintendo will never agree. I just canât see it as beneficial to the Xbox as a console and I really DO want to see a next gen Xbox happening again eventually.
That would only work if there was also a playstation or nintendo pass on Xbox. In an Idea world we could play all games on all systems. This whole exclusive thing is only good as long as the games are on your system. Imagine GTA would be exclusive to one system, that would be annoying for everybody but the ones who have the system. I understand everyone tries to carve out their marketshare. But I would much rather see they battle on hardware then on exclusive content. Imagine netflix, hbo etc would be hardware restricted. I think the whole industry needs to finally make the transition from this oldschool thinking that specific games can only be played on specific hardware. I mean technically it didnât make sense for 10 years or more. The times are long gone. Any exclusive is only artificial today
thereâs something youâre missing here. At the point where gamepass is big enough or xboxâs philosophy has changed enough about whatâs their ecosystem consist of, the platform will no longer be a plastic box or a pc or a phone, itâll be a Gamepass subscription. That subscription alone shall be self sufficiently characteristic of the ecosystem, so by putting gamepass on PS or Switch, theyâre not eliminating the need for their own platform, because the platform itself is being propagated onto those devices.
If Game Pass were available on PS5 then there would literally be no point in Xbox consoles. At that point MS should get out of the console business as they donât want to compete. Just buy the PS5 and play all of Sonyâs games AND XGS games without ever needing to go into XBâs walled garden. Switch is a little different because the Hardware is not anywhere close to on par with Xbox HW. Even then if you could buy all of Nintendoâs games plus sub to GP and play all of XGSâ games then there would be one less reason to join XBâs walled garden.
I donât see any long term benefits for MS to put GP on any other console. In fact quite the opposite because if Xbox leaves the console business that would give Sony around 150 million to 200 million console sales. You can be damn sure Sony would gladly turn their PS consoles into mini PCâs running Linux and chrome browsers. This would effectively put a cheap legitimate contender to Windows in many homes. With newer console sporting real CPUâs and descent GPUâs they should perform better than the majority of PCâs in homes right now.
Oh yes, all on one system? I would be so down for that really. As long of course we have the Xbox controller with that lovely, lovely battery life, haha
I donât think itâs going to happen anytime soon, if ever, but fact is Phil did not say it was out of the question. He did say it was up to Sony and Nintendo, also that right now it absolutely wasnât a focus for them. I partly agree with that a exclusive doesnât matter as long as itâs on systems I own, because personally I highly prefer to game on Xbox platforms, even when sometime this year Iâll also have the PS5.
But yeah, youâre right, I want to see them battle on hardware too and Xbox has been doing exactly that. Phil made sure not to lose on the power front and I expect they will go hard for exclusive content too. They sure have been doing that when it comes to getting studios. But the fact is that console isnât a priority anymore, not really, getting people on Game Pass is. But hopefully impressive sales for XSX/XSS will show them that the console itself is very crucial too. Because as cool as XCloud is, itâs not for me. My internet connection wouldnât be enough, it isnât 4K,i want the lowest input lag and I just love having a actual console.
So letâs hope the future holds more Xbox systems.
Outside of Xbox/PC, Game Pass will only be available through xCloud.
pretty much this. Xbox just needs to sort its infrastructure on the console blades side and the rest of the platforms will just propagate from there without additional porting work required at all.
