Yeah i saw this on another site. Satya has zero chill.

I swear I can remember reading a quote from Phil after they agreed the deal to acquire ABK and Satya asked him who was next pretty much.

Probably 80-120 on both Avowed and TOW 2 depending on the phase of the projects. Avowed is probably higher right now because it’s coming sooner but the TOW team is still mostly separate.

Grounded is still going with 20 people or less and Pentiment is done, so those people either moved to the other projects or are in the very early stages of something new.

Since being acquired in 2018, Obsidian have:

  • Announced The Outer Worlds
  • Released The Outer Worlds
  • Announced Grounded
  • Announced Avowed
  • Released Grounded early access
  • Released The Outer Worlds: Peril on Gorgon
  • Released The Outer Worlds: Murder on Eridanos
  • Announced The Outer Worlds 2
  • Released regular Grounded updates
  • Announced Pentiment
  • Released Grounded 1.0
  • Released Pentiment
  • Continued updating Grounded
  • Will release Avowed in 2024
  • Will likely show The Outer Worlds 2 in 2024 and release in 2025

That’s an unbelievable output for any studio, let alone one that was only acquired five years ago.

Josh Sawyer said he would love to make Pillars of Eternity III if it had a budget comparable to Baldur’s Gate 3

I’m sure he will get to one day, but I think he’ll lead a New Vegas successor first (I hope so, anyway. I do think Fallout will happen, it’s just whether he wants to lead it or not).

The story I read is that after Bethesda, the board asked Phil “what next” and he says ABK, but it was a joke, then months later, due to the problems ABK was to sell.

Why does so much of the internet seem to be taking Satya saying that they will double down on game dev and publishing as some sign that Microsoft is leaving the hardware business?

I mean it wouldn’t be much different to MS history if they did exit or partially exit the console hardware market would it?

Except for the fact that they’d be throwing away 22 years of accumulated marketshare, tens of millions of paying customers and billions of dollars in revenue. It doesn’t make sense.

It depends on two things…what sort of P&L model they see for their hardware given the crazy losses they make on each one sold. By the end of the gen they will know what P&L looks like per unit.

Also it depends on whether they can see an alternative strategy to replace that revenue…

I don’t say it’s likely at all but we can’t sleep through the signs that MS are absolutely shifting away in rhetoric from necessarily being console focussed and whilst we all get why the risk is at some point the balance tips to something else.

Depending on what side you fall, hearing the CEO of a behemoth double down is rather terrifying. You gotta filter that news and spin it or spiral into depression.

The rules of the game have flipped, its going to get crazy.

It does not mean that it will impact Xbox necessarly, could be mobile devs as well.

Why are they doing semantic gymnastics about what a CEO is saying instead of playing and talking about the spider game

Means he’s up to making AAA games again? I remember he said he didn’t want that anymore :eyes:

Something like BG3 just can’t be from a mutli-game studio, has to be all the studio on it with a bunch of extra hires. I wonder if Obsidian will continue to be a multi-game team after the releases of Avowed and TOW2, at least for AAA games.

If they do Fallout, I think they’re going to need the entire studio.

Been a while, good to see everyone. Recovery has gone okay, largely in part to my wife and all the games I got to get lost in. Not going to waste too much time waxing poetic about all the backlog I started to work on…. In between the rare moments where I wasn’t playing Starfield. There’s a lot I have to say about that game, but I’ll wait til I’ve finished the game…. That said, I think it might be my favorite Bethesda game. Recency bias aside, there are so many systems at play that I just constantly feel like I’m in a state of discovery (combat too, is a fantastic upgrade over even 76). As someone with ADHD, I rarely play a game all the way through and will often come back to a game five years later to finish (Witcher 3… it was three years but I still feel guilty about that one…) and I’ve never put in the amount of time that I’ve put into Starfield in the vast majority of games I’ve played… let alone within a month after its release.

Yeah, Josh did make those statements after New Vegas… which has a lot of baggage that’s not just related to its AAA status, but people change and more importantly, Obisidian’s entire situation has completely changed, which can have some knock on effects for creative will

@Knottian

I’m happy that your recovery is going well and that you’re feeling better. Also, looking forward to reading your thoughts on Starfield.
