In the last twelve months I beat Spiderman 2 at 60fps, HFW at 60fps and Rebirth at 60fps. With respect to Avowed, each of those looked way more impressive IMHO

Games on Xbox just seem to be targeting 30 on console, and I can only assume that comes down to time/cost. It certaintly isnt the hardware. We had this with Starfield and I am disappointed by this news.

It wont stop me playing the game, but I wont sit and lie and say I am not bothered.

It’s not the end of the world, but it’s definitely disappointing. Especially after so damn many games in 60fps. It’s quite jarring to go back to 30fps, but it’s not impossible. When the game launches I’m not gonna wait just for a framerate patch and once I adjust to it, it’ll be fine. Just wish we didn’t need to adjust.

It sounded like the game was on track for this year, but just to make room it was delayed. Ideally they spend that time on building a second graphical mode. But it kinda sounds it’s far from a priority for them.

I think it might also have a lot to do with the particular team’s priorities. A slow-ish paced RPG is not as impacted by a lower frame rate as a fast-ish paced action game. You also have some of their PC heritage where frame rate may again also not be as critical.

I get that, just personally am disappointed by it. I wish 60 could be a core target for the first party studios.

Most frustrating part is we were promised 60fps at the start of the gen. So, it’s making me wonder what is happening with development to get so many 30fps games at launch, and then patched later. I know for sure they’ll patch 60fps

Frame rate is dictated by how much work the software is doing and how fast the hardware can do it, there is no such thing as a standard frame rate.

I agree for the most part because there are a lot of variables to get 60fps and its not just a magic button of lowering resolution to get 60fps. I just feel they went start of gen saying stuff like that and ended up releasing 30fps games that are later patched to 60, which does feel weird imo when other gaems are launching at 60

1 game =/= another game. plus, it makes sense to not launch with an unstable 60 since that’s all anyone will talk about.

Well no, Elden Rings fps is still awful and Fromsoft is never going to fix it. But vrr helps mitigate a lot of those problems for me, because if it didn’t have it I would be able to play the game.

Unfortunately I doubt the 30fps will be consistent throughout in Avowed, but the game being 30fps means that vrr is just not an option.

Edit: wanted to add, that I know vrr isn’t a magic fix for everything. But it’s something that helps games be a more consistent feeling experience when the fps isn’t.

Yeah, certain devs and games get a pass for random reasons, :). An uncapped version might make sense, but at the end of the day, it’s always going to be a bit of a tradeoff.

I mean it’s safe to say both 30 and 60 FPS have been the standard framerate this gen, just like 30 FPS was the standard last one.

Another question is if the 60 FPS will continue to be the standard as the generation goes on and the games get more and more demanding.

And your first sentence is true, but developers can lower the quality of what the software is doing to raise the frames, it just can take a lot of work.

Another case is the CPU bound games, such as Starfield or Dragons Dogma 2 on some cities, or games like Cities Skylines 2, on these cases there’s not much the developers can do about it.

I would never have given Elden Ring a pass if it wasn’t for vrr, when I first played the game without a vrr capable tv.

It was a headache inducing nightmare, I likely would have ended up hating the game as much as I hate DS3 for being such badly put together technical mess.

Disappointed to see several instances of “sensitive to frame rate? Get a PC” as if that’s possible for everyone. Real Don Mattrick energy.

I myself don’t have too much issue with 30fps as long as it’s implented well(DS3 was a garbage pile of a 30fps game), if Avowed turns out to have terrible frame time with some inconsistent fps. I will definitely just not play past my first headache and either wait for a 60fps patch or if one is not coming just never bother with it again.

Sorry, I meant entirely in the discourse, not commenting on you personally! I also really struggled with Elden Ring and think it’s silly that as FromSoft ramps up the difficulty, they don’t also make it a far more stable and predictable game.

Genuinely, what else can someone say? Console hardware is a locked spec and software changes and different devs have different priorities.

Even if we say Xbox should only ever show things running at Series X specs (which I’d be fine with even though it has other downsides), that doesn’t change the framerate of a game. It just changes what someone might expect to be the framerate of a game based on livestreams of work in progress software that isn’t representative of the final build anyway.

(It would also be nice if Xbox eventually offered a higher-end streaming solution for folks who are particularly sensitive to framerate, but don’t have the means to buy the absurdly priced PC super-rigs.)

ETA: And I do mean genuinely because I’m lucky to be someone who’s not extremely framerate sensitive, but I do know how bad it sucked to play Elden Ring on Series S and feel queasy at the end of the night.

It’s not always a fair comparison because every game is different, but when your competitor is releasing all their games with 40/60/120fps performance modes and almost all of your big releases have launched at 30, it’s only natural that consumers will question why that is happening.

Like you said, different devs have different priorities but we’ve already seen with the Redfall and Starfield debacle that a lot of consumers see performance modes as something that should be prioritised, they’ve practically become industry standard at this point. I think it’s fair to hold Xbox to that standard for first party titles. Feedback is important.

Interesting, thanks for sharing. I’ll be curious to see when Sony starts shipping stuff like Ghosts of Tsushima 2 if it will have so many performance modes on the base PS5.
