This is less of a factor for Xbox now thanks to GP imo, in traditional sales it’s more an of issue
True. I think majority will go with Star Wars and Zelda over Redfall and play Redfall later on. The IGN video made the game look bad due to the person playing not knowing how to play the game but my issue with that video is why did Microsoft/Bethesda/Arkane approve that video being posted? If that was me, I would have said, pull that video. Go to the next one for the month and go back to that one later in the month or just scrap it.
Timing. Maybe one or two people want to play but the others aren’t available to do so at that time. When playing co-op, everyone has to be free at the same exact time and there’s no guarantee that always happens.
I’m not expecting Redfall to be delayed but I do believe that it should be 100%. I’m looking at it from a company perspective, player perspective, optics perspective, etc. Everything has to be taken into account. The only issue would be sales/marketing have already been going for a while and okay, that would be a monetary loss for Microsoft but in my opinion, if you truly care about your fan base especially on consoles, you need to take the money hit especially when they’ll make it back in the long run anyway.
You’re right as others have pointed out. But didn’t Saints Row have story progression? I mean come on. Saints Row from an AA publisher is outdoing Microsoft/Bethesda/Arkane in this aspect. How? Come on.
Oh yeah for Xbox it doesn’t matter I agree, just some people get so caught up in hype cycles if they miss the launch of the game it’s dead to them which could be why some 60fps enjoyers want it delayed, happens to me sometimes. But yeah for Xbox it doesn’t matter.
It’s story progression, do you continue the story without the full party?
This was their choice so I don’t see how what an AA developer did is relevant.
This is a strange post. Phil asking about Redfalls performance doesnt warp software development reality to a different timeline. There are numerous steps involved from Phil demanding 60fps to getting it at the start of May. Obviously Arkanes timeline didnt work out. We don’t know how far they are but even thinking outsourcing the Xbox port at the last minute to another dev is so detached from software reality i dont know what to even say…
If you want to educate yourself just read Fred Brooks excellent book ‘The mythical man month’. Its almost 50 years old but still relevant.
Yep. That’s what I’m doing.
It’s not hard, there are tons of games to play.
Software development book…50 years old…does not compute!!! FFS I’m getting old, and I’ve only been working in the field for 20 years.

Most of the stuff in Fred Brooks book is about people not machines, and people haven’t changed that much in the last decades.
Donal Knuths books The Art of Computer Programming are even older btw and also still very much relevant, fundamental algorithms proven to be optimal in the 60s are still optimal now ![]()
I think this is a really really problematic mindset to have. Games releasing on Game Pass should be 100% finished and complete, as we expect (or should expect in my opinion) from a physical retail version of a game on day one.
Otherwise, we are sending the message: it is okay if you release a game lacking modes/features because it is going to be on Game Pass and it will be updated. I can already see trend and the coming of “piecemeal-ed” releases.
I think it would be problematic if these things were a universal standard and only Xbox was doing them.
Naughty Dog promised a for years 60fps mode for uncharted 4, that never materialised.
The last of us 2 multiplayer was cut and I was told it was because “its a narrative driven series” that it “it didnt matter” …only now Factions 2 is multiplayer only.
God of War on PS2 used to be a 60fps game, same one PS3… on PS4 2018 is 30fps…no explanation.
Nintendo released a pokemon game without half the previous pokemon in a broken state. In February they released a patch that deletes players saves.
Capcom just released Resident Evil 4 remake with a 94 metascore and it has texture and performance issues.
Returnal shipped in 2021 and multiplayer was added a year later? Should we take this as confimation absolute SIE is mismanaged?
I’ve seen more uproar about redfall in 1 day then all of those combined.
I also notice no-ones mentioned Final fantasy 16 has no multiplayer, unlike 14 and 15.
A missing mode.
Silence.
And yeah, I will be playing Redfall at no charge launch day thanks to gamepass because i didnt care about the framerate when it was announced and i dont now. And its still superior to paying for games that launch unfinished as its what they all do.
But only Xbox is dogpiled for it.
Those situations aren’t okay as well. I dont want then to become the norm, so that is why I personally complaint. I agree backlash is always bigger for Xbox games, but that is nothing new.
You see? This I dont agree with. Are your expectations for a 70€ retail game different than for a Game Pass release? Why? The fact that the games release on Game Pass makes you give a pass to certain things?
An incomplete 70€ retail game is as bad as an incomplete Game Pass release.
I’m only suggesting the way Microsoft could be looking at it - missing features in terms of game sales is an issue, missing features with a subscription service is far less of an issue since it makes no real difference to their revenue if a small minority of the audience choose to wait until a later date to play it. As others have pointed out though, this approach does mean that the majority get their content earlier.
Why would anyone mention this? It’s not a missing mode, there just isn’t multiplayer.

I don’t have expectations for a $70 game vs gamepass one way or the other. If we’re supposed to be morally outraged over game development shortcomings, there needs to be a firm universally agreed list of bare minimums:
Must be native 4k? Well that every Switch game releasing unfinished. Ratchet PS5…sorry. Returnal Sorry…
Why not native 4K and 60? No more MS FlightSim…PS5 first party would just MLB The Show What about games that launch without multiplayer? Or games that don’t have split-screen.
If you want to judge what a finished "feature complete"game is…make a list of requirements that make a game complete, get it universally vetted and judge every game on it. If Redfall shipping without 60fps makes it feature incomplete, I believe Zelda and Final Fantasy 16 are incomplete without multiplayer.
I’m happy to define them like that.
No it’s worse because as I have 2 years on my subscription playing Redfall day one costs me nothing. Playing it when they patch it to be 60fps cost me nothing. If for some reason 30fps is unnacceptable for me (unlikely, I play 30fps games all the time) then I can just play the game in a few weeks once its patched.
As a digital only customer, if I buy a game for $70 and i spend a minute longer on it over my return rights deadline, thats it. Also I refuse to pay $70 for any game. Simple as that.
If you don’t want to play it til it’s 60 I have no problem respecting that, the delay is optional. It shouldn’t affect me…my ability to play it @ 60fps shouldn’t stop a PC owner with an older machine playing it at 1080/30…or Xcloud.
Final Fantasy 14 and 15 have multiplayer. It’s the expectation Square Enix have set.
Final Fantasy 15 adding a multiplayer DLC after release does not obligate every following Final Fantasy to have a multiplayer mode - and I’m not seriously going to take their MMO as proof of that either.
This whole mindset of holding games up against a checklist of everything the previously games did is growing to be really unhealthy in the gaming industry and does not reflect any of the practicalities of game development.
I mean, let’s take Halo - Halo: Infinite would probably have had a healthier development cycle if they weren’t expected to deliver an ever growing list of features no other game on this earth is expected to offer - and each of these features is expected to be bigger and better than before all the while requiring more development resources as development as a whole becomes more complex.
Developers should just make the games they want to make and ignore this checklist nonsense, and if people don’t want to buy Final Fantasy 16 because it doesn’t have multiplayer (a feature they had never promised) - that’s their choice.
I agree…that shouldn’t be the obligation. But if gamers are going to judge Halo that way …its the way it has to be for all games. Otherwise that’s bias which invalidates any complaint.
July is perfect. Early july. A month after diablo 4 and 2 months before starfield. After last year…ms can have 2 games in 1 month. Just stay clear of Starfield.
15s multiplayer was garbage. 14 is an mmo. Not having multiplayer is one of 16s positives.
