Xbox CFO Talks Bethesda Exclusivity; “We Want Bethesda Content to be First or Better or Best on Xbox Platforms”

I get that but Minecraft is literally available on android, IOS, windows, Nintendo, that’s like 2 billion people with access to it, does PS really matter? would Sony have done the same?

Xbox already succeeded in getting the ecosystem on Playstation though since you have to log into a Microsoft account for the PS4/5 Bedrock edition. They also succeeded in getting crossplay.

They really have nothing to gain from taking Minecraft off Playstation. They would get bad PR from removing it though.

That is my point about Xbox being scared about bad PR, Google refused to make a YouTube app and stopped MS from making one for Windows phone did they care about bad PR? no. It’s all about business at the end of the day.

I get your point regarding Minecraft but the same shouldn’t apply to most Zenimax games.

But the case by case basis thing could be a real thing, and not just something to throw people off. They might have some games that aren’t as big as Starfield in development that could come to PS5 and that they won’t announce yet. That’s what the case by case basis thing could be.

I see people saying Starfield is the first real test to see what their strategy will be, but at the same time I see arguments that the developers have worked long hours on the PS5 version for sure, will they just cancel that? I don’t know how that works.

I agree 100% though. Next year is already looking a bit dry when it comes to heavy hitters for Xbox, they need all they can get and soon they have huge franchises. If Starfield is done next year there shouldn’t even be a matter of will it come to PS5, no, it’s an Xbox game now. Sony won’t have the Xbox ecosystem on there, too bad, no games then. Had Sony done this deal they would have locked it down 1000%. And some say MS doesn’t have to do it just because Sony would, but in this case I say they should. Or at least, had I been Phil I would absolutely have done that.

Jez saying that MS perhaps is afraid of negative backlash if they announce Elder Scrolls exclusive to Xbox. Who cares? Screw it. No matter what MS does they’ll always get some backlash anyway.

Yep, in the end it’s all good news for Xbox gamers we are getting all Zenimax games day one on game pass. Everything else is just concern and crap we don’t know. MS holds the fate of all Zenimax games. If you are an Xbox gamer you do not have to worry

This is a terrible comparison and argument…people actually pay for Minecraft…you’re comparing it to a free app

The deal is still not finalized. I don’t think we’re going to get concrete information until it is.

I’m trying not to look into these wishy-washy comments to be honest. For every comment that suggests or infers that Bethesda games could be multiplatform there is another one that suggests otherwise (i.e. Phil’s most recent interview).

I still think Bethesda will remain exclusive to the Xbox ecosystem (Xbox, Xcloud, PC). This acquisition is still in the very early stages so people are not yet viewing Bethesda under the MS umbrella like 343, The Coalition, Playground and Turn 10.

I don’t think you’ll see Bethesda games on Playstation for the same reasons we don’t see Halo, Forza, Gears, etc.

They spent 7.5 billion dollars to grow the Game Pass and Xbox brand.

That makes no sense at all…if your bigger games like Starfield are going to be exclusive, why would MS make something like Evil Within 3 or Prey 2 a multiplat?

There is no logical middle ground here, if Starfield does end up being exclusive then it wouldn’t make sense to make smaller games multiplat…by that same logic MS may as well make other games like Compulsion and Double Fine games multiplats as well ei the smaller games.

Even if they have PS5 builds of certain games there’s no obligation to release them if no deal has been made. They could easily shelve or even throw the PS5 builds in the trash.

Actually we do have to worry for underlying issues, devaluing the Xbox brand which would indeed happen if Bethesda were multiplat. A potential customer saying “why would I buy an Xbox if I can play TES6 on PS5” would hurt the brand. It would be the definitive statement from Phil and co that they do not give a crap about Xbox and they don’t give a crap about Game Pass, that they’re interested in short term gains and truly don’t care about the eco-system or the people who invested in it, which means fewer people investing in Xbox and Game Pass, which means less content for us who did invest in Xbox and Game Pass.

The reason why exclusives are worshipped, especially first party, and held to such a high standard is because its how Sony, Nintendo, Microsoft and maybe eventually Amazon/Google reward you for investing in their ecosystem/service

Then YOU can worry and post concern about something you cannot do anything about where decisions are being made outside of the gaming community and I’ll play these awesome games on day one on gamepass,

And you’ll continue to get fewer games, lower quality games on Game Pass and less bang for your buck which does directly affect you

Don’t get me wrong…this is the scenario IF MS showed poor judgement in releasing Bethesda games on PS5…

I do not for a second believe that will happen because MS is smart enough to disregard short term peanuts that they’d get from Playstation, they have always been about the long game. I am 100% confident that Bethesd games will be Xbox/PC/xCloud only

What does irk me is that Phil doesn’t keep people like this from opening their mouths, causing more confusion and possibly harm to Xbox. I’ve seen several comments about people who read this article and believe they no longer have to buy an Xbox or invest in GamePass/xCloud because they believe TES6 is coming to PS5.

Ba bye

Thank God you don’t work in the industry

Skaar,

You clearly do not understand business. Let me explain a little about sales to you at a tech company. What you make $$ for the company actually matters, and people get fired for underperforming.

If you look at the quotes, I don’t think you are going to be too happy with some of the decisions that MS makes here. They have never leveraged Minecraft in the manner you are talking about, and I doubt they do the same with some of the “large” Zenimax properties. They might, but going by some of the quotes coming out of MS, it really might be a “case by case” basis, as they have gone on record.

Or they might just lock everything up - too early to tell. But poor judgment to make MILLIONS upon MILLIONS of dollars? That’s an interesting take …

So…I’m going to completey wreck this argument with 2 points

Minecraft already existed on Playstation, and is a service based game that’s dependent on having a large player base. Its the same reason why they won’t take TESO and Fallout76 off of Playstation.

They already exist and people PAID for them already. You are comparing taking away games that already exist and people paid money for, to not releasing future games on the said platform. If I paid for TESO on PS4 and can no longer play it then yes…that would be a huge issue on Microsoft’s part. Horrible argument and comparison

So I ask again…why aren’t Halo, Everwild, Avowed etc coming to PS5? I’ve noticed that when I ask this no one can seem to come up with a logical response. No seriously…answer the question…clearly MS wants those PS5 sales from Fallout 5, TES6, Starfield right? So how come they suddenly don’t want PS5 sames from Halo and such? Why is Hellblade 2, a series that started on the PS4…Suddenly not coming to PS5?

But…I clearly understand business better than you do…

Something someone on Reddit wrote not so long ago, that was a really good write up. It was posted here too. It was why the acquisitions made sense and why all the games will he exclusive to the Xbox ecosystem. It’s pretty much what Phil has been saying for a while now, it’s all about their ecosystem.

Also the people arguing for Bethesda games on PS5 are stuck in a catch 22

Microsoft clearly wants those Bethesda sales on PS5 according to them but for some reason they don’t want Halo, Avowed, Hellblade 2 potential PS5 sales

When they’re confronted with this counter point they can never seem to come up with a logical reason why MS wants PS5 sales from some games they own but don’t want them from other games they own

Thats true and if it truely is about gamepass the games will only be where gamepass is

Skaar,

You act like it is cut and dry, but it definitely is not. Do I think the games will be exclusive to Xbox? For the most part, yes I do. But there are numerous factors to consider here, that I’m sure MS is aware of. Let us take Minecraft. If MS had taken the franchise and put it exclusively on Xbox One, do you think it would have driven sales? It might have, Then again, it might have simply been replaced by one of the many clones out there that are easier to attain. When you aren’t the incumbent, sometimes it is difficult to strong arm customers into your ecosystem …

Instead, MS has recouped the Minecraft investment many times over. So what happens with something like TES? PC gamers and Xbox fans are okay with exclusivity, but do you really think a bunch of PS fans are going to buy into the ecosystem to keep playing? Especially when there are other alternatives out there? They might, but then again they might not

This is just one of the arguments, of which there are quite a few. There are also numerous arguments for full exclusivity. But to act like it is cut and dry is ignorant. It simply isn’t. What benefits MS the most? Not just the Xbox division

And I actually work from home - sorry if my response isn’t prompt enough.

No…I don’t because Minecraft’s key factor has always been accessibility ei being able to play it anywhere. Minecraft isn’t the game that people run out to buy a 300 dollar console for. Its the number one selling game in the iOS and Google play store, Minecrafts owes its popularity to being everywhere and on any device

So… I’m not why you keep bringing up Minecraft because there’s no correlation you can make to Zenimax or any other Microsoft owned games

And its a formula that’s working for them. Microsoft has recouped their Minecraft investment and they clearly feel that they would like to continue to make money off Minecraft which only works if they keep it on as many platforms as possible

The biggest flaw in your argument is that Minecraft is the outlier, not the norm. Minecraft in no way shape or form can be compared to other MS games.

…yes…because unlike Minecraft…TES is a game that people will actually buy a console for…or at the very least invest in xCloud if they don’t want to buy a console…that’s another major flaw in your argument, ignoring how MS has actually given everyone a venue to play their games outside of simply putting games on the other platform

Same can be said with other games, Hellblade 2 which is a game which started off on the PS4 and MS is now using it to drive players to Xbox/GamePass/PC

And not only that this can be applied to Sony as well. If Insomniac makes a Sunset Overdrive sequel, is Sony going to put the game on Xbox? Not a chance, they’re going to make it a PS5 exclusive to help drive people to the PS5.

Its really not a hard concept to grasp, what you’re doing are mental gymnastics and trying to rationalize a reason on why MS would logically want to put only Bethesda games on PS5 but for some reason not put their other games on PS5. Where is the disconnect? Why would MS put Bethesda games on the PS5 but not other Xbox games like Hellblade, Avowed etc?

Yes and none of them are actually good, logical arguments that have substance to them.
