Yeah they reportedly had a good looking alpha build, which multiple people saw.
I do believe the game was initially more like the Elder Scrolls since Obsidian has been wanting to make an Elder Scrolls like game. So an internal reboot along the way wouldn’t surprise me.

FWIW, InXile’s game likely got rebooted too. You don’t go from InXile to what is rumored to be an extremely high budget ambitious game.

There where two other leadership roles which got changed in 2021 I think. Soulban which was the lead writer for a year and the dude which was music director for Obsidian as a studio left to be music director for Playstation as a whole, but that was reported a while ago and Jason was referring to changes that where already reported on as per his Resetera post.

As for why there might be conflicting information, remember how all the other ‘Xbox insiders’ were confident that Starfield was coming out in late 2021? When you get your information from people who work on the PR, marketing, or publishing side at Microsoft, it’s going through different filters than when you get your information from people who are directly working on the game.
