BF2042 was too broken. But if there are a lot of games like that, people will eventually get used to them.

I forgot this game existed. It’s got a really strong following on Xbox, it’s still in the top 20 which is pretty crazy. IIRC it hasn’t been confirmed if this is a full or timed exclusive yet.

BF2042 was too broken. But if there are a lot of games like that, people will eventually get used to them.

I think people know what to expect from an Early Access game and treat it accordingly. BF2042 was released as a finished game, and most people expectantly noped right out.

I think the genre also helps. Since the majority of early access titles tend to be in the survivor genre, players already know what to expect and they’re fine with it as they get to “grow with the game” as you said.

It’s almost definitely just a timed, unless a game is with global publishing or one of their own studios assume it’s timed

Hope they’ve negotiated a gamepass deal, seeing exclusives on xbox timed or not but having them not appear on GP is

Yeah, I think it is timed because they announced it as a console launch exclusive.

Question for everyone: what are your favorite E3s/Showcases and how confident are you that this year’s show will be in that class?

For me: 2003 - The Halo 2 demo. Even though the demo never appeared in the game, that’s when it became clear to me that Halo was bigger than just a Xbox exclusive. I’ve never felt the energy around a single game at a show like that since. During that E3, there was also Fable and KOTOR appearances which would go on to be huge franchises for Xbox

2005 - This E3 didn’t have the best game demonstrations but it was nostalgic in that the 360 really captured my imagination in terms of what console gaming could become. The community features, achievements and digital integration were all industry-defining. Final Fantasy coming to Xbox was a big surprise that showed the generation would be different. The short glimpse at Gears opened my imagination to the potential of the hardware with games.

2007 - This was one of the biggest years for Xbox ever with Halo 3, Modern Warfare, Bioshock, Fallout 3, Lost Odyssey and Mass Effect all making the show.

2018 - That year was highlighted by 5 new studios, Halo, Gears, and Forza, and big 3rd party games with one of Microsoft’s best-paced shows up to this point.

Underrated - 2013 - This show was marred by what happened before (“TV, TV, TV”) and how it concluded ($500) however what’s often forgotten is this was one of Microsoft’s best showings of exclusive games at one time in their history. Maybe only 2007 rivals it on that front. Ryse, Sunset Overdrive, Quantum Break, Killer Instinct, Dead Rising 3, Forza Motorsports drivatars, and Titanfall highlighted the exclusives while MGSV and Battlefield 4 were the headline 3rd party games on stage. It was also a good combination of gameplay and announcements.

For this year’s showcase, I believe there’s a good chance that this is a greatest hits. Biggest new IPs to reveal gameplay since 2006 and 2007 when Gears and Mass Effect were shown. Starfield, Redfall, Avowed, and FM are the easy predictions for gameplay but what if Coalition is ready to show us a UE5 demo? What if Undead is ready to give us a glimpse of what doubling their staff and investment in animators means to the quality on screen? Compulsion is using UE5, has doubled in size, and has Ninja Theory to borrow best practices from. What if they’re ready to give us a glimpse? If Final Fantasy and Persona hit Game Pass, it would be call-backs to 2005 when Final Fantasy made their E3 stage. The biggest question is surprises and fan service. Been years of asking for Banjo, Lost Odyssey 2, another KI, and Mech Assault. Do they have a Star Wars or other licensed IP in production? Will Microsoft reveal any more studios?

There’s really a buffet of options to show…and I’d be taken back if this year isn’t in the conversation for their best show ever once it’s done.

For me, Microsoft’s best showcase was E3 2018. Second was E3 2019 followed by #3 2013 and #4 2014. I don’t remember any showcase from any company pre-2013 since I don’t remember following the showcases or anything like I have done since last generation started.

As for 2022, I think the showcase will be great but im not expecting it to match or surpass 2018 for me. Hoping for a few licensed exclusives. Star Wars, LucasGames, Marvel, DC, etc. because these are all hot right now and very popular. Hoping Microsoft stops being scared of getting licensed exclusives. Not expecting any studio announcements until the ABK deal goes through.

Well, I think they can be more aggressive with the games like this…Lock more popular games behind the ecosystem. Though they don’t own devs thus that won’t happen. Era of not funded exclusives for big games is ending…
