Kinda where I’m at…

Starfield didn’t blow me away like I thought it would…don’t get me wrong some parts of it looked rad but some of made me think “No Man’s Sky with a budget” too….

Sam’s think with Redfall…some of the trailer had me really intrigued but a lot of it just looked generic too.

I thought Pentiment looked rad and Diablo IV was the game of the show for me, looks awesome.

I think it was a great show for Xbox and a regular/bad one for Xbox Game Studios.

while phil can say there is gameplay but idk if the people at xbox understand what gamers really want…they want first party games with gameplay no disrespect to indies but there gotta be good mix of both this show was just carried by persona, kojima news nd starfield even with that i m kinda mixed

My full thoughts (after re-watching some videos in 4K).

I came in expecting Microsoft’s best show since the 360 era. I came away with an 8/10. When I realized this was only going to be the next 12 months, my expectations immediately dropped…and rightfully so.

Speaking to the negative first: With Microsoft announcing games really early the past 3 years (Everwild in 2019, Avowed, Fable, State of Decay 4, and Perfect Dark in 2020), moving these shows to focus on the nearer future was going to mean a transition show. One where almost every AAA game of significance was going to have been from older announcements. Being able to only speak towards the nearer future also eliminates the potential for fan service surprises…like a Banjo or Killer Instinct. A few days ago Avowed was probably my most anticipated showing along with Starfield and that wasn’t an option once we learned the parameters of the event. I think Microsoft would’ve done themselves favors by letting people know earlier. I also thought the show dragged in the middle with a lot of Indies kind of blurring together. I love Indies…but this year didn’t stand out as well as the handful they showed last year.

But on the positive side, the show started and ended strong:

  • Starfield looks like the beast I was hoping it would be
  • Forza Motorsport sets a bar on what a new jump not just in graphics, but also in gameplay, can be
  • The Japanese presence was the most significant since early in the 360 gen when Final Fantasy was announced to be coming and then Sagaguchi announced a partnership shortly after. This mirrored that. Persona will be a Game Pass cloud gaming headliner. Kojima is Xbox’s biggest Japanese partner since Sakaguchi. Team Ninja still has one of the best action studios in the industry and getting a Day 1 GP game is a significant turn from when they had Nioh as PS exclusive.
  • Diablo looked fantastic
  • Redfall looks like a solid Arkane game
  • High on Life looked too good to be true from a brand new Indie developer

In summary:

  • Next-gen feels like it’ll start with Forza Motorsport and Starfield
  • Japan’s presence on Xbox feels the strongest it’s been since the mid-point of the 360 era
  • I’m disappointed by the lack of fan service or better looks at games announced 2 or more years ago

8/10

Excellent Games pass showing. Disappointing lack of first party showings and EXTREME disappointment at lack of Avowed.

However, with the focus on the next 12 months, totally makes sense.

Came out the show with many of the same questions I had when I went in. ‘What is first part studio X working on and what does it look like?’

2022 looking good for games pass, bad for exclusives.

That is all. Redfall, Diablo and Starfield stole the show for me. Very happy, but just wanted more lol.

I think we might get big first party reveals in the future but I think it’s a good thing to focus mostly on gameplay this showcase rather than revealing games that are far away.

Also I think it’s better to save big hype reveals such as a new Banjo reveal or Killer Instinct reveal when there is a live audience rather than a digital event.

I love Diablo III so that helped for me lol…

starfield is a mixed bag some places it looks good nd in some places it looks mid especially those eyes and shooting not upto the mark even with them saying having 1000 planets nd the environments look kinda empty nd enemies…not upto the mark

yeah but we r talking about exclusive games bro…diablo is available everywhere

Don’t think a bunch of multiplatform games will ever be comparable to being shown 30+ games I’ll be able to play on a subscription that I have.

still everybody was hyped after watching sop nd when it comes to this show it wasnt the same…

I get you on that, a live audience.

As for revealing games that are far away, it can work. Look at Hellblade 2 at TGA last year in December. Sony with many of their games, it’s doable and really adds something to these shows. I guess Ninja Theory just didn’t have something ready and Obsidian neither. That’s definitely possible and maybe that’s why Xbox opted for twelve months.

It’s pretty easy to hand pick some nice looking multiplatform games. Makes for a terrible showing for a platform holder though.

The Starfield demo could have been an old build of the game earlier in the year. And It’s still going to be at least 7-12 months before Starfield is out so Bethesda could still make adjustments to some of the rough edges so I’m not too worried about it.

they better do lol

The “12 month” target was a refreshing take, Forza Motorsport, Diablo IV and Starfield all looks incredible and I can’t wait to play them, there was many good anouncement and Xbox deserve praise for making deals with japanese companies (like Koei Tecmo / Team Ninja is a massive move) and many indie titles seems really cool.

But I think it wasn’t a good look from a first party point of view. It really was a Bethesda showcase and the only Xbox studio that show something impressive was Forza Motorsport. The total lack of AAA Xbox Game Studio first party besides Forza was a dissapointment.

Xbox should have break the “12 month” rule to add a little more “dream” to the conference and showcase some more “far away games”, just a look at Hellblade II or Avowed, would make the conference feel more complete.

Here, I just feel they’re trying to keep things for a later showcase this year, which could be great, but if we don’t have an XO or something else… I don’t know, still think it wasn’t enough.

For a Bethesda game, it looked very solid. There’s a reason there aren’t Skyrim-likes in the industry of note. No other game duplicates their scope and depth. There was a nice diversity in the visuals aesthetically. For as wide and deep as the game goes in its system and variations to gameplay, they exceeded my expectations…especially since they were showing actual gameplay of something that could have up to a year of polishing.

Well said, I feel the same way. Many of these games day one on GP is awesome, that’s a fact that can’t be denied. But what is the rest of XGS up to, indeed.

And now we very likely have to wait a full year for the next show, which hopefully changes. Nintendo does it and it works, Sony does it too and it works. Xbox can too.
