Xbox Acquisition |OT6| If this is about competition, let us have competition

Yeah they don’t have that big recurring revenue project. Monster Hunter seems to be something similar, SF6 has some potential akin Mortal Kombat. Dragon’s Dogma has such potential. Capcom had only 1b in revenue last year though.

Capcom has a very solid roadmap too.

In case of a defensive acquisition against Amazon or other big tech, yes I see MS would want to bid for Capcom.

even outside of Monster Hunter others could fit like a mario maker style franchise for Megaman or maybe push street fighter into more live service (or some of their other fighters) for example

I have said it before and I will say it again, I 100% anticipate others to start buying a ton of shit

Mario Maker is nowhere that big to be consider recurring revenue thing. In general Nintendo’s recurring revenue stream is remakes :joy: In general Nintendo’s recurring revenue comes from their IPs and their ability to produce a lot of games using those IPs. No other platform holder is capable of that.

It has to, sooner or later. I suspect MS even want that because I don’t think they will be allowed to be the only ones buying every publisher out there  others have to start and balance the purchasing market for MS to continue, but really I might be wrong in this we don’t exactly know for sure lol

it was an example but Nintendo’s revenue stream is fine in my opinion, they do really take the disney approach in area’s like making their games hard to access then selling them again for full price but their games sell well enough to justify buying an entire console which is underpowered to play them

They are nowhere near to be limited yet, but we need to wait for the end or start of their fiscal year. They do love autumn-winter periods for acquisitions.

What I mean is being the only one buying big publishers. Imagine if after ABK, MS intend to acquire another big publisher with no other giants making a competitive acquisition, how would it look to market regulations? Buying 3 big publishers consecutively with no other party doing similarly is gonna be very suspect to regulations from the way I see it.

I don’t think they would care because MS wouldn’t even be the biggest player still, tencents share would still be bigger, they would have competitors still and gaming is a non estential business

Would it make regulators suspect anything? Publisher by itself is publisher and if not for size, ABK would not make much waves in the media. You cannot build the case against publisher acquisitions where

  • any random indie or game can appear and become more profitable than the whole publisher by itself (Genshin Impact generates more revenue than Capcom)
  • anybody can start making games that can generate more revenue than the whole publisher
  • what is the publisher? a set of studios with big IPs - a lot of companies buys tens of studios every year with big IPs.

Gaming market is so big and diverse that most of the “monopoly” concerns come from Playstation community which represents only the fraction of the whole market.

I don’t expect any problem with regulators. Even with ABK we haven’t seem anything aside “cloud”, “worker rights”. I do want to read the SEC at the end though.

I’m pretty sure if they acquire a publisher with $4-5B revenue/year they’re gonna be #1. Plus, even if not, acquisitions are total control, unlike what Tencent does which is mostly minority-majority stakes.

It still represents the control over the market. Even if it is just a stake.

nope, if they bought T2 their revenue would still be 0.7% behind tencent

Even then we cannot combine the revenue like this - some games flop, some games become exclusive and thus generate less revenue etc. Other companies are growing, market is growing and so on.

I see no problem in Microsoft acquiring more. They can always say that - “chinese company is bigger than us”, “japanese company is bigger than us”, “we are good guys” etc. Also I do wonder why still nobody brings internal sexual harassment issues within SIE :joy: Where are those senators advocating for worker rights?

You guys are telling me what’s possible because they are public, not what it reasonably going to happen. You might as well be telling me that they can just do a hostile takeover of Capcom.

Microsoft is not going to buy a company without the support of the people that work there. That is how you lose a ton of talent, especially in a competitive industry and completely goes against everything they’ve been doing with acquisitions.

Yeah you guys make good points @WAHderfulGoldenStar @TheBrightestSun what I said is really just my personal observation, not like there’s a guidebook for this stuff lol

they can if they wanted

…if they did go out to a bunch of teams and seen if they supported the acquisitions, don’t you think these acquisitions would of leaked? Only the highers ups probably knew about the acquisition so this argument is pretty weak since the higher ups supporting it in no way would translate to the employees being happy about it since they would obviously have different goals

Forcefully acquiring a company without support of management will surely get a different reaction than doing so with approval of management.

sure but that doesn’t mean the employees will all quit their jobs since the management and employees once again are very different. Being completely hypothetical, lets say the board members own a percentage of a company and they get an offer which will basically garentee an easy life from now on…does that have any reflection on the employees because it just sounds like the management and high ups care about themselves after successfully running a business for how many years and wanting to cash out on an offer which shareholders will need to vote on…and with the ABK press release it didn’t mention any higher ups outside of the board of ABK I believe so I think thats a decent president
