Xbox Acquisition |OT6| If this is about competition, let us have competition

This one has always come off as “Quantity over quality to me”.

I feel like they release an RPG maker game every other week.

I mean, it’s definitely substantially grow the service titles wise, but not sure if it would from a quality viewpoint.

I do like the rest of your picks though!

Well I agree if MS getting a studio from Kadokawa It would be Fromsoft not saying Spike Chunsoft would be back cause I love their games but Fromsoft is one of the best studios out there

I think the main difference with someone like Ubisoft is their games sell anywhere between 10-35 million copies, it would grow GamePass and Xbox substantially.

For the studios you mentioned I doubt they will break 5 million sales, for example Level 5’s best selling game was Professor Layton and the Curious Village which sold 4.4 million copies.

Yes Xbox need to offer diversity but after the Xbox One generation they need to concentrate on growth first IMO.

Out of interest which family games do Pearl Abyss currently have released?

Ubisoft have Rayman, Rabbids, Just Dance & TrackMania.

They also have lots of teen focused games like Riders Republic, Crew and Steep.

If Microsoft was specifically planning on acquiring studios from Kadakowa, I could see them going for both FromSoft and Spike.

While From is obviously the bigger of the two, Spike also has a lot of variety (visual novels, fighters, smaller JRPGs, etc) and higher output overall.

Although at that point, I’m not sure which licenses would come with Spike and I’d be curious if Kadakowa would even want to keep the rest of their gaming branch if their two most well known studios were sold off.

Its highly unlikely overall, but I do think if given the chance, Microsoft may jump at it. Monokuma and Mizuki are both easy mascots that could be used for future “Xbox Japan” efforts if added to the first party lineup.

As a financial analyst/finance professor It’s always fascinating to read “laymen’s” thoughts on value, price, profitability, etc. I’m not trying to be condescending - it really does fascinate me. I am also acutely aware of how little I know about most other fields/professions. (I tried to have a conversation with my plumber the other day about his profession. He probably thought I had an IQ of 75. Ha.)

Anyway, after reading the previous 30 posts or so I was tempted to put on my professor hat and define a bunch of terms, etc. Then I remembered I had made some similar posts months ago. So, being the lazy gamer I am I thought I would just post links below.

I may circle back a little later and address some points that I didn’t cover in the earlier posts.

Ya just think if you going to get one it would be Fromsoft and they have a good output for how big their games are with that said I dont see Kadakowa selling any of their studios off

I enjoyed reading this. In your opinion, assuming they get activision blizzard king what would be their next move?

Has someone who absolutely has no idea how all of this works. I want to say I really appreciate your insight in this matter. Its really cool to see the opinion of users with experience in any field!

You may have destroyed your PC when you read my post about ubisoft not worth it due to them not being that much profitable compared to their massive size and the problems they carry? I dont remember where but some user (not here) told me that they didnt see anyone (no amazon, sony apple…etc) buying them due to the reasons listed above. Would you agree with that?

IN MY OPINION. I will echo what @YuudaiFuture said. I think MS has already has a lot of content for the western audience and at the same time some of its western content will help them a lot with asian markets due to those IPS already being big there (like Minecraft, Diablo, Warcraft and COD) And while is truth that Ubisoft has tons of valuable Ips and amazing teams. I just think ABK already covers most of their needs (more content will always be bettee though )

Now coming back to @YuudaiFuture point. The reasons I would like MS to go after japanese studios (or different studios around the world) is not only to have “content” from those places but because, for example, you will never see the kind of games japanese studios make from a western one and vice versa (well…duh) I know it sounds obvious but Im playing AI: the somnium files and I havent seen anywhere the craziness, ideas and creativity of this game anywhere! (Thanks @Mort and @Doncabesa to help me discover this masterpiece!) That is something you will never see coming from Ubisoft (Danganronpa ia also freaking incresdible) because they different phylosphies when creating and designing a game.

Ufff man that was a lot! To summarize. It would be really cool for MS to get people, studios, publishers…etc from differents parts of the world. I would like them to diversify and…who knows? Maybe one of those studios may end up bringing to gamepass what the squid game ended up becoming to netflix? What has the bible I just wrote has to do with Ubisoft and acquistions? I dont know (e.e) maybe I would like MS to go for more…interesting and weird content?

PD: Bad grammar thanks to my phone and my big fingers (dammit I want to go home already)

PD 2: Hope to get at least a F+ for this verborrea :eyes:

I have personal preferences, but I have no idea what the leadership team at Xbox is thinking - so I can’t really make a prediction. I think the best any of us can do is look at Xbox’s past actions and statements and try to extrapolate from there.

We know:

  1. They like huge IP
  2. They like quality
  3. They like taking studios that are resource constrained and giving them a budget that helps achieve their vision
  4. They want to appeal to the PC market
  5. They want to expand the geographic footprint
  6. They want games that are mobile/cloud friendly

I’m sure folks could add even more points to the list above. Based on what we know, practically anyone (other than Tencent, Sony, Nintendo, Apple, and Amazon) could be a target.

I’m sure the acquisition team is doing its best to get a feel for the current regulatory environment (not just in the U.S., but Europe and elsewhere) to figure out what the limits of future acquisitions are. The read on that situation will likely dictate how aggressive they are in the near/intermediate future.

There are compelling business arguments to be made for any number of publishers or studios. We discuss the names on here endlessly (TakeTwo, Capcom, Ubisoft, Sega, Asobo, Avalanche, etc.). I am sure the Xbox team has evaluated every name we have discussed (to one degree or another). I wouldn’t be surprised if any of them were acquired in the two years or so after ABK closes. I also would not be surprised if none of them are acquired.

My top two personal preferences would be Sega and Ubisoft (I’m one of those cretins who actually loves their open world games). But, I can see the value in many other potential targets and would be thrilled if they got TakeTwo, Capcom, or any of the other frequently discussed names. I would also be thrilled if they managed to land all/several of the WB studios with a licensing deal attached.

I also would not be surprised if the next acquisition was some “out of left field” choice from South Korea, India, Latin America, or some other “non-Western” location.

Pearl Abyss is developing DokeV and it actually caught my eyes. If it’s successful then that would be great to acquire PA for the long term. Think about 1 vs 100 or a new family-friendly game with 10-year plan.

Just wanted to say this post 100%, I think people are thinking with their tastes and not the business impact.

What were the 2 big ones that were supposedly looking to get acquired? Ubisoft and EA right?

Do you guys think we will heard something this year about these rumors or nay?

There was also the supposed acquisition of Square from SONY’s part…but I think we all can already dismiss this one as bullsh1t.

The EA situation is interesting because I am curious to see if any of those types of companies are going to invest in gaming for real.

The mistake that people keep making is thinking that JRPG games or Japanese games are only meant for the Japanese market. Sony and Microsoft’s situation aren’t comparable as you said since Sony has a significant amount of high profile and some smaller third party exclusives that cover the genre while Microsoft has zero, this is what allowed Sony to close their internal Japanese studios.

make you an offer

That’s a pretty reductive take… but sure that’s why Japan Studio was closed
