Xbox Acquisition |OT6| If this is about competition, let us have competition

Ubisoft seems like it would be a likely acquisition target considering how many staff members they have.

All those support studios could cut down the time on things such as the next Fallout game and more, which would be great.

I guess that kinda depends on how fast Todd and the writing team can work. Unless they plan on putting faith in another team to handle a future installment themselves.

That’s the tricky part with these things.

That’s a good point.

This reminds me of when I was a young kid, I used to think that a game could be made 5 times quicker if the developer got 5 times the amount of developers working on the game.

I know now that it’s not as simple as that :phil_lmao:

Maybe we’ve all been thinking about upcoming acquisitions wrong. Maybe we just need to do this :phil_lmao:

Summoning circle:

       🕯 🕯

After many edits, I eventually got it. Lmao

I don’t see Ubisoft happening

Thats the same thing people said about Activision, yet here we are.

(I dont really want or care about Ubisoft, but I also wouldnt be upset about it)

The difference with ABK was the price mainly. Nobody expected Microsoft to throw 70b. Nobody expected anybody to acquire ABK at all - people expected the slow demise of that publisher.

So Ubisoft isnt possible…beeeeeecause …what exactly? Ubisoft is a fraction of the price, if anything it increases the chances of it happening. (By MS or anyone else)

Because it is just not a good acquisition value wise?

ABK by itself is an absolutely stellar publisher - crazy profitable (basically the biggest non-tech non-platform holder), relatively lean and encompasses several platforms including the ones that Microsoft wanted to enter for a long time (mobile). ABK had Nintendo level evaluation for a reason (at one point it was even bigger).

People always bring the price, but just because Microsoft have the money, it does not mean that they buy everything that is cheap.

I stopped reading here as baseless conjecture isn’t particularly valuable.

Any acquisition talk comes with the presupposition that the purchasing party has evaluated the target and deemed it worthy. If a purchase comes to pass it is because people far more knowledgeable than any of us have determined its value and acted accordingly. Your feelings are exactly that, yours.

I am not sure how is this different from the idea that somehow Microsoft will go and acquire Ubisoft or EA. I just stated the reasons why I think it won’t be happening. Simple as that. I also provided the reasons why Ubisoft is not a good purchase - based on logic and reasoning that I consider correct. Like for example some people think that Microsoft not buying Square Enix West is a big loss, while I don’t agree with that assessment.

Just because you think Ubisoft is possible and I don’t think it is possible, it does not make us right or wrong.

I mean we have a lot of folks wanting to buy a studio just because they made a single game they like, but that’s entirely different matter

Also the discussions going in circles is the main issue there, but there is nothing happening outside anyway :man_shrugging:

Yep it’s less than 90% of the value of ABK right now.

Ubisoft is a absolute steal at the moment, even if it was just for their back catalogue and current output of 3-5 games each year it would be worth it IMO. You also have to remember 1-2 of their games are always in the top 10 sellers and Tom Clancy is a big e-sports game.

When you throw in all the studio locations and manpower it’s bonkers really, I’m surprised they are still independent.

If they can turn them around they will be pure money printers for Xbox.

Uhmmm I read somewhere that Ubisoft is not worth it for anyone due to their low revenu/profit and their size (or something along those lines :p)

Personally. I wouldnt be against ubi acquisition since Im probably one of the 100 out there weird specimens who really love their games but is it really worth it for MS after ABK?

I think MS should go after a japanese publisher ans fix their only real major weaknes and I fully believe that by the end of this gen they will have solve that…wether by acquiring or partnering with someone…

PD: sorry for bad grammar. Im in mobile :eyes:

Ubisoft is currently at 10% profitability.

Yeah, I think Japan is next. Anecdotally even if they acquire Capcom, they won’t solve JRPG problem, but Capcom is the one with the least amount of baggage.

Unless they decide to go full on movie and music streaming (though they can do that in parallel). It would be interesting to see a universe where Microsoft owns WB + Paramount + Spotify :fire:

After getting back into the newer Assassin’s Creed games with Origins and looking back at Splintercell, and Watchdogs. I would be all for Ubisoft if for anything just to bring their entire catelog to Gamepass. Once I finish Origins it would be nice to hav Odyssey and Valhalla in Gamepass along with all of their other games. Imagine bringing Splintercell rebooted as an Xbox franchise!

I don’t necessarily think Japan is their only weakness.

Any genre which they don’t provide from their first party output (not just JRPG) is a weakness. Whether that be fighters, puzzle/trivia, party, action adventure, pop-culture/superhero, kids/family etc.

IMO they could concentrate heavily on Japan for the next 5-10 years and the games/subscriptions would still sell substantially less than what some of the Ubisoft games could do for the service. This is because the western style games that Ubisoft offer are more popular and appeal to more markets.

It’s the main reason PlayStation dropped their Japanese studios and started offering western style games. Many people already refer to these games as ‘Ubisoft Clones’ for good reason.

For example Persona 5 is one of the most popular JRPG’s and in total it has sold around 5 million copies. Far Cry 5 sold over 10 million copies and nearly every Ubisoft game (most of which are annual) do atleast 10 million every year! It is important to note Ubisoft’s games are annual when you factor there was 8 years between Persona 4 & 5, yet Ubisoft do over double these figures each year with multiple franchises. Assassin’s Creed Valhalla doesn’t have an official sales figure yet, but they have confirmed its the highest grossing AC game to date bringing in over 1 billion! Some other examples are The Division, Crew and For Honor which have also sold over 10 million copies.
Bringing these sort of games to your service will likely do more than a JRPG studio for example. Also the Japanese market share is obviously substantially smaller than the US and EU.

Before I’m misunderstood I’m not saying Xbox shouldn’t invest in Japan but IMO they should focus on games with a big playerbase first and Ubisoft has that and a huge back catalogue for a very low price! Once Xbox has a bigger market share than PlayStation in most regions the Japanese devs will naturally come to Xbox anyway.

IMO Xbox also lacks a first party studio that concentrates on those big third person action adventure games just as much as a JRPG studio! Sony don’t own any JRPG studios either they just convince Square to do a deal due to their current market share over Xbox.

EDIT: The values in the chart I was using was inaccurate so I have updated the figures accordingly.

Sorry but I don’t want to see Microsoft acquire Ubisoft. Why focus on western “US” publishers? South America, Africa, and Eastern countries exist. Ubisoft may be a decent publisher, but Xbox lacks fighting, jrpg, shoot 'em up, visual novel, thrid-person(general), and Family Friendly.

  • Cyberconnect2 = Fighting and JRPG
  • Spike Chunsoft(Kadokawa) = Visual Novels
  • Level5 = JRPG
  • Kemco(Small Publisher) = JRPG, TRPG, SRPG, More RPG style. and Turn-Based.
  • Pearl Abyss(Korea) = Family Friendly and MMORPG
  • IO Interactive = Third-person
  • Create a new studio in Japan. Better than nothing = Shoot 'em up, JRPG, and Visual Novel

I understand we get more western games but Xbox genre is not balanced yet because Xbox has many shooting, WRPG, and RTS. Maybe Platformer too but only one or two studios make platformer games.

Plus Xbox acquired Bethesda and Activision doesn’t mean the Eastern audience growth. That’s why Xbox needs to get first-party JRPG, Fighting, Shoot 'em up, and Visual Novel.

I just want to see some eastern studios than western studios unless I don’t mind if it’s Certain Affinity, IO Interactive, and NetherRealm.

Sorry if my writing is not good. Please let me know If I can change it.
