??? News to me now.
Somebody has been watching happy days.
The first two games were highly played as well. And Cyberpunk was monumental. If they had delayed a year to implement some fixes like Xbox would have pushed it would have moved 30+ million.
It definitely had a lot of anticipation, I remember a lot of hype around the time they released that “killing monsters” trailer
Not gonna debate the quality but this is A trilogy that nobody cared for that much until 3 no? I reckon the number of people that played or cared for anything before 3 is extremely high.
I legit didnt hear of Witcher 3 until like months after release when people were hyping it up and how their dlc was the greatest ever in any game and I only snagged on a Game Awards sale for like $20 out of curiosity.
Dropped the game for years before finishing it when The Netflix show came out.
Anyway we are getting off topic so let me real it back in. As @KakkaKarrotKake says there are much better buys due to the output imo.
Highly played, maybe but nowhere near “event” level, they were just decent games that built a good following, it wasn’t until 3 that shit went massive
and a year delay wouldnt have fixed Cyberpunk, that game has issues from the ground up, people talk about glitches but even outside of that, what’s actually there is far below what people were expecting
probably means nothing
The first two games sold millions of copies, 6-7m each if i recall.
Its about foresight Javier, CDPR are still one of the biggest devs in the world, and are unlikely to make the same mistake twice.
Still am of the opinion that CD Projekt Red’s output isnt worth the money they are asking and you could get 4-5 studios for that money.
Heck you got Zenimax instead lol.
Exactly
This shouldnt be controversial, CDPR are a big dev and maybe they’ll be able to pump out another Witcher 3 level game again but that much money for one dev that puts a game out every 5 years isn’t great for gamepass
There is simply better things they could spend 4-8 billion on
A dev that doesnt own either of its Games IP’s either btw. So you are spending money on a name and talent you could hire elsewhere.
Eastern Europe is relatively untouched in terms of MS major rivals. Its a huge talent pool and buying CDPR gains direct access to it.
So much shortsightedness and tunnel vision but alas, it never surprises me.
Nowhere does it state that their output is a flatline with more resources they could develop more games at a quicker pace. their problem was their eyes were bigger than their stomach. More resources and the ability to hire the amount of staff that intersects with their vision would also decrease production time and mean more games.
Secondly, while you don’t need a bunch of studios that make longer, big expansive single-player games like the witcher and cyberpunk. It’s not horrible to have a few.
Also, in a world where everything is being acquired. It never hurts to take something just so others can’t. Microsoft and Sony arent in positions where they are like “I only have enough cash to buy this one large studio or 3 or 4 smaller ones what should i do?” they could just do it all. either with straight cash or financed through debt, or through stock options.
I expect Xbox to get another publisher, a dozen or so studios (a number of them in developing countries over the next 7-8 years). I’m not here to argue whether I’d rather get CDPR or 4-5 studios. Microsoft and Xbox most certainly can do both. Yeah those 4-5 studios are important for content output. But it’s like a museum, you need the crown jewels to really attract people and that’s what CDPR is, a crown jewel studio. CDPR is that luxury purchase you make while still doing the other stuff.
CDPR is a brand, the name alone brings people in.
Id rather them get a nunch of companies rather than one big one like CDPR. They can buy absobo, team cherry remedy and maybe from with that kind of money
They can easily do both
Speaking of FROM Software if Sony does aQuire them xbox better get a team to make those types of games. to me thats a biger loss than no fighting games on the platform
I think new acquisitions also need to be looked at from a perspective of the Activision/Blizzard deal. MS will want to ensure that their 70 billion investment reaches its full potential, where Phil Spencer understandably wants to put out more of their IPs. This means that they’ll need to acquire new developers, free up people from Call of Duty, or somehow manage to expand AB relatively quickly.
Given how popular CoD is, the question is whether MS can reduce the output and teams by much. It’s not something you drastically change after spending 70 billion. MS might therefore more be looking for new support studios, or perhaps developers suitable for those IPs. This of course doesn’t exclude other possibilities, but would imagine that MS is at least considering studios that could help here.
