Xbox Acquisition |OT5| Talking Exclusively About Xbox Acquisitions

I think it’s a great opportunity to give some dormant IPs to some of the studios, just not Rocksteady

That’s one hell of a take…that I disagree with.

There’s been a lot of talk of these studios reviving this and that but it’s worth remembering Microsoft gives them creative freedom and isn’t likely to force any IPs onto these studios. It’d have to be a case of these studios specifically wanting to work on some existing IP in Microsoft’s portfolio (also assuming no other conflict in this, like if Travelers tales wanted to make a Minecraft game they would need to get permission from Mojang etc. etc.).

I agree but at some point they’re going to need to just task/pay someone to do these IP’s if they care to revive them this century.

But then again, Xbox won’t even greenlight studio’s who want to work on an IP (Armature, Remedy, Insomniac)

I personally only want 2. And the IP with them

Netherrealms/ Mortal Kombat

Monolith/ FEAR

And if they want to acquire The Suffering, Dr. Muto, and the Psi Ops IP I wouldn’t mind either :slightly_smiling_face:

I would agree if Rocksteady was more of an efficient studio. But 7+ years from Arkham Knight to Suicide Squad is a long time waiting for a new IP.

That’s the main reason why if Microsoft does acquire Rocksteady they could do both and have one team work on new IPs or their own thing and another team could revive classic IPs.

didn’t they have a project cancelled? Either way I think that’s something that could be improved a lot and shouldn’t deter MS from acquiring.

Is there any particular indication as to why there’s been such a gap? I always figured between Rocksteady and WB Montreal struggling to get projects out that WB was the problem. Either way, while Rocksteady comes with some baggage to sort if they are still living up to their Arkham days quality they would be a strong get, with WB Montreal not too far behind.
I do agree with everyone saying TT and NR seems the best options though.

I think they were rumored to be working on a Superman game. And I agree Rocksteady would bring a lot of talent to Microsoft and would be a good acquisition in addition to Netherealm, TT Games, and Monolith.

I’m not really sure why there was a huge gap I think they were rumored to be working on a Superman game but I’m not sure how long they were working on it. It could also be due to other factors such as funding since WB has been looking to sell their game studios for a while before the Discovery acquisition.

And true I think Netherealm and TT games should be the priority but Rocksteady would be another great get as well if they still have the same quality as they did with the Arkham games.

Think rocksteady were meant to be working on some sort of sequel to Batman: Arkham Knight that featured Bruce Wayne’s son? If I remember right

Is it possible to know for sure, no, but I don’t think that it’s a stretch to say that most companies aren’t going to want to work on the overwhelming majority of the dormant Xbox IP. I don’t think that the Xbox leadership really cares that much about them anyway and strong arming even if it’s just with a financial incentive would be terrible.

I had heard this too, apparently it was late in development which would explain the gap.

What they “need” imo are the IP’s. So I guess if they buy the whole thing WB would be more willing to give them to MSFT for 10 + years.

If you mean exclusive rights to gaming licences for 10 years, then that won’t happen, not unless for some ridiculous price at least which means still won’t happen.

Why not? You literally have Wolverine and Spiderman which are bigger than WB stuff in that same situation.

There’s no proof whatsoever Disney gave Sony exclusive rights to SM and Wolverine. Disney is licensing their IPs left and right to whoever wants and willing to pay or course, and they ended any type of exclusive licence with Star Wars and EA.

I’m not saying they won’t allow platform exclusive games, I’m saying they won’t give a publisher exclusive rights to an IP.

I agree it’s very unlikely to be long term.

I suspect that Sony come to a deal with Disney based on Sony having the movie rights (to Spider-Man characters) and wanting to continue their MCU arrangements (The MCU is a gold mine for Disney).

I must admit I would find it humorous if Disney stipulated future Marvel games had to be multi-platform.

On a side note I wish the movie rights would revert back to Marvel/Disney. Sony can’t make a good superhero movie, Venom and Morbius are abysmal and ruining the Marvel brand.

What I heard as well is superman was pretty far along and got canned along with a few other games pretty early in prototyping also cancelled by wb execs And then WB Montreal had one or two cancelled projects before settling on GK

My guess is wb games management system was in rough shape outside of NRS
