It’s not about selling another console, it’s about Game Pass subscriptions and Sega has games that are played by millions across PC and console.
Additionally, it would get Xbox a publishing arm in Asia and give them a ton of IP for the metaverse.

Big IPs and mobile games.
If I am a total war fan, 100% I would get ultimate GP if Total war was on GP>
They’ve streamlined their operations so really the company is almost all gaming now, there’s 3 subsidiaries and 1 is the resort business which is very tiny. That’d just be jettisoned probably they aren’t even resorts in Japan.
First off some people will buy an xbox to play Sega games. Just like some people will buy a PlayStation to play god of war or a Nintendo to play pokemon. Where Sega fits in to Microsoft is a provider of different content. Look at netfilx. Not many if anyone is spending 20 bucks a month just to watch cheer on netfilx. However, a percentage of people watch it because its there, then you have another percentage who will be like oh this is in top 5 most popular shows right now let me check it out. Then you see it in new releases a few times and your like what is, people are watching it let me check it out.
Thats Sega, thats why Microsoft buys Sega. Because you need content, you need a variety of content. You need pc content, you need console content, you need mobile content. The idea of playing total war on my phone is crazy but i’d try it out. THe idea of playing Persona on my iPad is crazy but i would because its part of the service. I’m not specifically paying for it but since I’m there I might as well sample the buffet.
That’s how gamepass gets you. Not every month is Mass Effect LE dropping in, or hitman but you have these other assorted experiences that fill out your overall time spent engaged in the platform.
So when you look at acquisitions thats what a lot of acquisitions are. Not every acquisition is going to be call of duty exclusive, fallout exclusive, sometimes its going to be here just some solid content made by good developers to get you to the next release.
Just like not everything is ozark, For every ozark or arcane you have a cheer.
I dont think Sega would sell Atlus though.
Seeing the Bungie deal makes me more optimistic that MS will acquire Sega someday. We are seeing more and more that these acquisitions dont necessarily mean that games have to be exclusive to one platform. Bungie is multiplatform, Minecraft, Cod Warzone staying multiplat, ESO staying multiplat.
These third parties have leverage now in buyouts. Maybe there could be a deal where Sega still puts a handful of their games out on Switch and Persona games still come out on PS5 but Gamepass is the only subscription service you can play Persona on.
Or maybe I am overthinking this and Sony was desperate and that is the only reason Bungie had so much leverage lol. Even if that was the case I wonder how Mojang was able to keep Minecraft everywhere.
GTA, COD, Halo, NBA and FIFA (ea play in GPU) all in Game Pass just think about that.
If Atlus were to break off from Sega under an acquisition it’d probably be Nintendo getting them. They’re a good Nintendo partner too and Sony really doesn’t care for “niche” Japanese games like what Atlus makes.
Actually Total War, Football Manager franchises sold about 4 million copies last year and that was from July 2020 to July 2021. Sonic did 4 million as well despite not having a game release. But I see what you are saying a lot of people overestimate Sega sales and are a bit extreme. But to suggest Sega games are niche is also extreme.
I think Satya wants big IPs for these billions deals, right now two of publishers acquisition focused on Big IPs.
Zenimax: Elder scroll, Doom and Fallout. Activision blizzard: COD, WOW and King Candy Crush
Seems pretty good to me.
This is why I’m on team Take Two
This. If EA and Take Two don’t want to sell than MS should pay to get Take Two and EA games on Gamepass Day 1. Those games are massive and would bring in so many subscribers.
I guess this one of reason they passed on WB back in 2020, having MK IP is nice but that it. MS wants more big IPs if they required pay more billions
i am sorry but Xbox dont really have alot of fighting games except killer instinct i dont think they passed on WB
Xbox doesn’t make console games though. They make games for the Xbox platform which can be accessed on Mobile, PC, or a console that they produce. But the xbox service which is what they sell is not limited to consoles nor specifically targeted to them.
Another way Sega makes sense is Microsofts weakness has been the eastern gamer. Gaining people in China, India, japan, Korea etc. Sega creates an opportunity at a low price to create a xbox Japan so to speak. Do you know who has contacts and doors already open with every studio of any size in Japan and relationship and trust with them Sega. Do you know who doesn’t? Microsoft.
where does Microsoft want to expand too? The East. You can’t acquire or purchase a bunch of Korean or Japanese studios without some entity to easily manage them. You can do a lot through a zoom or teams call but sometimes you need boots on the ground. ITs a lot easier for a company like Sega to hop over to check out japanese or Korean developer then it is Phil spencer or matt booty.
Some moves are about organizational structure. Some moves have nothing to do with the console gamer and that is okay. If you are a console gamer you are taken care of and will be continued to be taken care of. However, a move like sega is about taking care of the platform on a global level for the 5 years for the 10 years down the road.
As whats Micrsofts weakness? Localizing to India, localizing to Korea, its a big deal that games are starting to get Japanese language support for Xbox. Those are things Sega does naturally because it’s there home language. You can fill so many organizational, structural and gaming related holes with Sega and you get probably get it done for 6-8 billion tops. You can buy Sega stock for like 4 bucks USD. They could double that 8 bucks just get it done. Thats probably the lawn care budget for the Microsoft campuses across the U.S.
It just makes sense.
for price they were asking and only MK IP Was not worth it for MS.
With Rocksteady’s next game being rumored to be delayed, do you think this make it more likely or less likely Microsoft would buy WBG?
I think what he is saying getting big IPs on GP is more important than Sega output
for example GTA and Fifa on xcloud and GP would bring more subs and new users is not about consoles here.
the pull factor is stronger here for ecosystem
well that price is similar to Bungie but they were getting lot of studios too i think it was quite too much but currently with this content war going i think everyone will try to sell for more
