Xbox Acquisition |OT2| Something, Something, Snowball Effect

I dont know how Netherealm alone can change the fighting scene on xbox.

Well, for starters you get the biggest name in the house, then there could be a snowball effect, like with SFV. If they can also double down with a parallel new KI, it could be huge, two of the biggest names in the genre exclusive.

It’s tricky because if they lock them up for exclusive and lets say Microsoft continues to get bandai namco and next street fighter then it will make a difference. However, it still won’t make a difference in getting the japanese fighting games that usually skip Microsoft these days. However I think if NR games are exclusive that is a big deal since MK and even injustice move a lot of units compared to other fighting games. However, we won’t be getting any new games, but instead locking out others that used to get their games

It’s time to move on from this conversation, because it’s off topic, but before I do that, I would like to fix this quote of yours…

“for a genre that right now doesn’t have a massive amount of popularity on Xbox”

The fighting genre doesn’t have a massive amount of popularity on any platform, period.

Wait…I thought we were moving on…

What if Kojima’s episodic game is a fighting game where you fight one round each month and if you put down your controller your character is deleted from the cloud ?

Agreed. Crystal Dynamics and Eidos have been resigned to crapping out Marvel games that either are or look mediocre. Tomb Raider is more or less dead after Shadow in my opinion, and Deus Ex likely never to return. Square’s biggest success in the West as of late was Outriders and that:

  1. Did not come without its many issues

  2. Was a second-party endeavor

  3. Lived and died by Game Pass

Also remember, Square kicked IOI to the curb who then went on to find enormous success and with the Hitman IP—a property Square had written off.

Square’s Japanese output is even worse:

  • Quiet Man

  • Balan Wonderworld

  • FFXV (took a decade, abruptly dropped support)

  • Babylon’s Fall (looks atrocious)

  • Stranger of Paradise (puke)

  • Octopath (decent, pretty, but horrible structure)

  • Kingdom Hearts 3 (awful, worst entry in the series)

Square’s biggest hits in recent years are FFXIV which required a full reboot and FFVII Remake—also required a reboot. FFXVI looks decent but now the publisher is reliant on one poor dude to save their biggest IP. Dragon Quest is great, but they don’t even fully own the rights to it. Nier is pretty good, but they’re incapable of putting a budget behind it.

I’ll be blunt: Phil and company would be MORONS to waste billions on this failure of a publisher.

Day 37: People have argued over fighting games, shrimp, and Game Pass shilling…

All I want is SEGA. That’s it. That small request.

Did that bring us full circle?

As @Shpeshal_Nick and @Sikamikanico have hinted at, I feel like Microsoft is “sitting on” confirmation of Asobo being acquired, and they’ll announce it closer to when Flight Sim launches on console next month.

Look your entitled to your opinion, but they would buy se in its entirety, because in ssence se’s identity was made and is Final fantasy as well as dragonquest, ahd kingdom hearts. I love ff14, best mmo ever, and Ff7 remake is awsome, and 16 looks sic…all ips have hits and misses no.matter the medium. Avengers sucked but you still want to buyhthose studios? Game pass needs more family friendlynips that are triple a…

That’d be a dream come true.

That’d mean we’re 25% there to the dream team acquisition.

is there any more concrete rumor about the acquisition of Asobo Studio? :chief_think:

Yeah, SE track record in the last decade is trash, they got right FF14 2.0, TR 1& 2, FF7R and then stop (among high profile titles). Anyway I feel MS is not keen on buying publishers over there, we joke about fanboys crying over Bethesda, but in this case the"demographic response"would be a pr nightmare for Xbox after abandoning Japan with X1 gen (imo it was 50/50 fault of MS and japanese closed minded devs).

That would be great, there have work on a bunch of family friendly games in past. Also maybe they could partner up with another Xbox studio for ReCore 2

If they were don’t you think they wouldn’t have been sending Plagues Tale to ps

I feel like those kind of deals are made pretty far in advance.

Could be wrong tho.

Edit: Got confused with PS+ for the first game. The console release of Requiem was probably planned out quite a while ago between Focus Home and Asobo.

Well, there is the The Outer Worlds precedent, they even announced it after acquisition, Focus Home most assuredly had a sequel lock-down clause.
