Crytek, Asobo and WB would be high on their priorities. Jez only talked about Avalanche and IOI and their perceived valuation and difficulties.
At some point in time Asobo will be unavoidable. The tech that has gone into the first hybrid cloud game called FlightSim is unbelievable. It is a 2 TB game being played with a 100gb install size.
I just don’t get this way of thinking. Why would you hope it costs them lots of money ? Whatever they end up costing Sony is what the market was willing to pay and MS, Tencent etc could have paid the same.
You would have to think MS are looking at absolutely every metric from Game Pass. So they know the interest and player count for fighting games already. Pretty worrying that they let MK and Tekken leave Game Pass earlier this year.
In the end, MS is not the one who decide how long a game is gonna stay on the service but the developer/publisher putting their games on the service. Also, it is not because a game is leaving the service that they will never come back. They have been several examples of that, Fallout 4 and GTA 5 for example.
Yeah, MK is the only true AAA left in the genre from a budget standpoint, it’s also the only one which sells millions and millions at launch, but it has a weak online scene, maybe MS could help with that, considering they are among the best in supporting online games. A day one GP MK would overshadow any Sony move in the FG space frankly.
Games absolutely do come back but lets not pretend MS don’t control how long a game is on game pass or whether their deals are extended. MS is doing deals with the publishers that are time based, if they want to keep a game on the service they can negotiate a new/updated contract. So if there was decent number of MK or Tekken they would have fought to keep them on there.
They are not but they have a really dedicated player base with decent numbers. Also the games you listed came out years ago ( Tekken 2017, MK 11 2019, SF5 2016…) If you compare them to say FPS games of similar release the numbers are not bad. Battlefield 4 & 1 both have lower numbers than any of those FG ( except KI ) and they have active communities.
As for Xbox , there is no point looking at Xbox number if you are trying to see if a FG is actively played.
Sony locking SF6 would be a much bigger deal. Fingers crossed it doesnt happen.
Devs can also refuse to put them longer, no matter the cost. Though, I agree that MS won’t fight for more if the interest isn’t there in the first place, and it seems there is less and less interest in the fighting genre.
On that note, we should get back to the topic, FG genre in Game Pass should be in the Game Pass topic.
Even if the game release today, the population would be average, once again fighting games are not that popular anymore like they used to be, recent example Street Fighter V, it flopped hard in sales and population at the beginning, they recoup a little bit with heavy discounts and with the new content, but the popularity or population never reached to the higher numbers that Sony and Capcom were looking for.
Uhmm because Sony isn’t like MS, they don’t have the same amount of resources to invest. And if they overpay, it means less resources to invest in other stuff. Less stuff behind one specific paywall that I’m not that interested in. Less stuff being taken away from my fav platform. Common sense, no ? If you wanna play a Sony exclusive you HAVE to buy a 400-500 box AND pay 70 bucks a game. To play a MS exclusive, all I need is 10 bucks a month.Don’t even need to buy a box or a PC. That’s it. So a Sony exclusive isn’t the same as a MS exclusive. It’s a lot worse. Which is why I’m cheering for MS to acquire more and am not keen on Sony acquiring more. For very specific reasons that I just mentioned.
And I absolutely don’t get your way of thinking here. So just because certain genres aren’t as popular as shooters, RPGs that they shouldn’t bother investing there ? ‘‘The metrics aren’t there, so why bother ?’’. Couldn’t disagree more with that. Why buy Double Fine then ? or Compulsion. Or InXile. They should have only gone for Bethesda since their games sell A lot. Sorry but I couldn’t disagree more.
And LOL if you think MS let Mortal Kombat leave from GP. How does that even make sense ? There’s so many scenarios that could have played out here. Maybe WB wanted more or maybe they didn’t want it on GP anymore, maybe MS wanted to allocate that money elsewhere who knows. Unless you are 100% sure best not to speculate things as facts. I also think you’re vastly underestimating the popularity of those games within those genres.MK is HUGE. Like insanely HUGE. You’re comparing 4-5-6 year old games’ popularity in todays world. A bit unfair. You could say the same about the racing genre outside of Forza Horizon and Gran Turismo and maybe Motorsport. Nothing else in that genre is popular (i’m not counting Mario Kart the same way I’m not counting Smash). Forza Horizon They all drown quickly. But the point is regardless if a certain genre is popular or niche, they should invest regardless so that there is SOMETHING FOR EVERYONE. That’s MS’ own motto. To reach 3B gamers. That’s a figurative way of saying ‘‘we want to create something for everyone’’. Even the smaller genres. Why else get titles like Ascent, Gunk or 12 minutes. Clearly MS cares about every type of genre. I mean their E3 was practically the most diverse show ever. Something for everyone. Even if they’re smaller games/not so popular genres. Also, if gamepass continues to get to absurd numbers, say 100m in the future…they will have the power to make any game from any genre popular. In the old traditional format Psychonauts sells 100k copies. So why bother with Double Fine ? As I said. Something for everyone. And with gamepass growing, Psychonauts 2 will maybe have 2m or more players playing the game, engaging. That’s already 20x more than the original. It’s all about growing every game/genre.With gamepass, that’s possible. Who knows by the time, if, Psychonauts 3 releases it could have 10m players playing it.
Either way, most of this isn’t the appropriate thread for it so I apologize and move on from it.
I would like Microsoft to acquire a dev that specializes in arcade sports games. Like i’ve said before, but I really did enjoy powerstar golf as a launch game for xbox one, and would be nice for Microsoft to have a studio that specializes in arcade sports. Plus, having arcade sports games blends well with gamepass ,and they can easily be live service games
I am not gonna try to answer everything you said in your posts because like @beastmode10 said we are getting off topic.
On acquisitions, I am not saying that they shouldn’t bother investing in Netherrealm I am questioning if they should ? Netherrealm would cost a serious amount of cash for a genre that right now doesn’t have a massive amount of popularity on Xbox. Could MS rejuvenate the fighting game scene on Xbox with that studio putting out a Mortal Kombat or Killer Instinct every couple of years. I don’t know…maybe but I think money would be better spent elsewhere.
There is a big difference between what MS did with Double Fine, Compulsion and InXile ( all awesome stuidos and great acquisition ). These were all independent when acquired or incorporated into MS. Netherrealm being owned by WB means they have to be bought out. I would much rather see that money spent on Asobo, a studio that can put out far more games across a lot of different genres.
Don’t get me wrong, MS could definitely decide to buy them all. I get the feeling that anything out of WB is pretty complicated with regards I.P.
