Xbox Acquisition |OT| - So We’re Back to Making Lists, Huh?

Okay, gotcha. Family and friends call me Danny as well. Daniel just for work. Dan here and there. Daniel by the way is my first name. Peter is my middle name. When I was younger, never liked being called Daniel but as I’ve gotten older, it’s grown on me. lol.

Sadly, Tencent has majority stake in Klei already.:frowning:

This is also why I keep Fat Shark off too.

Honestly, I’m far far more interested in Microsoft acquiring smaller studios that walk on the tight rope of being somewhere between indie and AAA. I think the best part of Microsoft’s strategy is that it gives those types of studios a new business model to be successful in, and while I do love the big triple A stuff, I do often times find myself more attracted to the smaller more creative games.

nothing says you can’t have both, but if Bethesda was the only publisher ever bought out (I wouldn’t be surprised if it is), and went back to buying studios akin to the ones they got in 2018-2019, I’d be a very happy man.

The Bethesda acquisition was genius by MS. Pulled the trigger and saved themselves really

I’d love to see smaller devs get some Microsoft backing (I’d rather see them funded rather than purchased), but I think it’s more likely these “garage shops” will see GP/publishing/ad deals vs. being acquired outright.

I want them to get IP that isnt being used anymore. They got Gears from Epic, would be amazing if they got Tomb Raider and Deus Ex from Square

Microsoft needs new IP, buying The Tomb Raider IP would be great just dont see a new IP get screwed over for an old IP.

I think Tomb Raider would be awesome as I’d like to see it continued but goodnight the backlash…”it’s originally a PS franchise!!!” would be screamed from the rooftops, unfortunately. I think that’s the case with almost every major IP purchase they could make. Doesn’t mean they should or shouldn’t though.

It sounds like Crystal is working on a new Tomb Raider right now.

Damn, another acquisition. Zynga bought the Torchlight III guys.

I also believe that Xbox’s will get Kojima’s new IP. Regarding Konami it is possible too though - I believe Indiana Jones games will come to GamePass and so is Konami’s game if it there is any. I doubt Konami will spin out their own streaming service.

Yakuza games are really good, I wouldn’t say Sega Japan is a nightmare exactly. Also from the looks of the latest Game Pass titles coming out it already feels like Sega now views Game Pass highly in terms of strategic growth. They’ve had great success with the service.

The best multiplatform engine? since when?

The last game I played on the Crytek engine was Ryse son of rome. It’s had a pretty terrible adoption rate by third party developers, everyone is on board the Unreal Engine and Unity train.

After this Zenimax Media/Bethesda Softworks deal is finalized, Xbox will be in a position where the business can be extremely flexible.

Areas to expand (from my perspective): (1) adding 1-2 studios under Xbox Game Studios (thinking this is the maximum in the current leadership structure), (2) adding 2-3 studios under Bethesda, (3) acquiring a mid-to-large sized publisher as Xbox’s 3rd publishing arm, or (4) building a 3rd publishing arm under a new leadership team.

With how rapidly Xbox’s ecosystem can grow across consoles, PC, and cloud (especially phones and TVs), now’s the time to continue bolstering the first-party/exclusive content to ensure Game Pass stays so far ahead of the competition that no companies can catch up.

The problem with Cryengine is it could never run well on entry level hardware. Lumberyard also weren’t a good fork either as I could never get the editor running. Unity and Unreal seem to run on most PCs. Also a lack of an asset store hindered CryEngine’s adoption.

Yep. Just buy Sega. Do it. It’s time. So say we all.

Prey was on CryEngine and it was incredible. The issues with the engine can be resolved with optimization and better management (brain drain was common with Crytek). Having less platforms to support automatically aids with the optimization end. People forget that CryEngine also had one of the only SVOGI RT implementations, which was promised by Epic in 2013 yet never came to fruition… its one of the many reasons I always remind people to be very skeptical in their expectations of UE5 based on that tech demo.
