Atlus have great succes with Microsoft ecosystem now because MS release game on PC and Persona sell incredibly well here
The landscape today is simply not the same. Ace Attorney did bad as well. Isn’t that series supposed to be coming to gamepass?
Traditional sales is not gonna be the end all be all anymore and that shall help getting Japanese games onto gamepass with a lot less friction and animosity.
The way they acquired Zenimax and how they will operate essentially as a publishing label/subsidiary opens the doors to MS going after whoever they want to get.
For example if they were to buy Capcom or Sega or whatever they’d let them operate exactly as they were, whether games would become exclusive to the xbox ecosystem would highly depend on how the deal is struck in the first place.
While it sucks that they are taking games away from the competitors potentially even more. The reality is they want more and more content to bring in a much broader audience and going after a publisher with big teams/studios in Japan is one way of appealing to that market.
Kinda hard to make any ground when Sony are getting Japanese timed exclusives left and right so really what choice do they have?
I don’t think the Japanese care for XGP, and I find it unlikely it takes off. Huge risk to spend billions in the hopes that the Japanese embrace streaming and subs
There’s a reason why the latest Persona is coming to switch and steam day and date as well. Persona is no longer a playstation franchise, that era is over. Both Sega and Atlus somehow much to their surprise learned how much fucking money they were leaving on the table after P4G success on steam.
They don’t spend billions for Japan, if they buy SEGA they spend billions for PC player mainly
Did you not see Sega was happy about how well Yakuza did on gamepass
Do you have data to back up that Japan doesn’t care about gamepass? Cuz I don’t know, and you appear to do so. Would love to see for myself.
SEGA was happu about Yakuza perform on gamepass and give us every Yakuza on gamepass (except the 7), Persona did incredibly well on Steam but SEGA japanese can’t live without playstation lol
They save themselves considerable amount of money and risk if they contract those devs to long term exclusivity agreements. Best of both worlds and none of the issues that come with an acquisition
If Sega happens its because in a big part of their PC presence as well, their pc presence and Japanese presence are both things that MS are looking for in a big way.
It bolsters their pc gamepass substantially, brings JRPG’s/ more japanese games and also gets them sonic all in one.
Clearly it wasn’t going to stop at just owning Tango gameworks and I’d argue the writing was already on the wall in that regard. Xbox are trying to get to this to a point where they don’t have to rely on anywhere near as much 3rd party deals as before while their owned IP/first party take over mainly.
It did well so who cares?
I mean I went into a lot of Japanese gaming shops, hung out with gamers whilst I lived there. All of em had no idea what XGP was, and there wasn’t a single Xbox console or game anywhere lol. This is not a country MS should acquire in.
It’s easier to acquire them so they can buy other japanese studio under the SEGA umbrella and can work closer with SEGA occidental studio, also if they acquire SEGA they can grow them a lot, Yakuza and Persona deserve more budget.
Acquire and cater to are two different things.
Japanese games sell outside of Japan… and so does Game Pass…
Believe it or not Gears doesn’t sell the most in Canada (it’s probably Mexico or the US). The country a developer is from isn’t necessarily the target demographic…
I actually agree it’s the PC side MS want, but they can’t get it, without a while load of BS. Paradox are a similar set up to Sega Europe, which is why I think MS go there instead
Again that’s a PR disaster mate. Those shops I went in close in your scenario and those gamers would leave gaming. The arrogance is astounding
Sega requires Sammy to completely split the business divisions away from each other, I won’t say its impossible though, at this point after Zenimax nothing is certain anymore how far they will go to acquiring publishers.
Personally though out of all the publishers Sega ticks all the boxes that they are looking for apart from a fighting game studio. Though yes it’ll be the most difficult to negotiate for.
Though this isn’t about selling consoles anymore, Asia really really love their Switches/Mobile phones and other portable devices this is about xcloud more than anything else especially for that region of the world.
As to how the impact of something like this were to happen, so people still refusing to try the xbox ecosystem still its really uncertain. This is much more of a gamble imo but then again so was everything from 2017 leading up to now.
Nobody is gonna leave gaming, 70% of the gaming market in Japan is mobile, Microsoft just need to make a mobile persona or an XCloud version of Persona.
Arrogance?
You do realize that console sales in Japan in general are going down, right?
If we’re going to resort to name calling, then I’m out. This isn’t a discussion anymore.
