Xbox 2025 Layoff Thread (crazy we need one...)

Sounds right. Wednesday, mid-week, flip a coin to be a good or bad day day, okay that one is on me, and shortly before the long weekend (in USA at least). Yeah, I can see it.

I don’t even want to go online tomorrow if this happens. It’s gonna be a field day against Xbox.

Best to stay here or go offline in general.

It will be much less bad than what people are saying now. RN people are saying it like its 2k devs being laid off and 5-6 studios closing. It won’t be near that, but somehow the same people that are saying it will be that bad will act like whatever happens is worse than expected and will grandstand and take victory laps and i told you sos even when 2/3rds of their predictions were wrong.

So, just a normal day? :face_with_tongue:

Sad but true. XboxEra is a breath of fresh air though.

Hopefully zero studios will get closed. And as far as I know no credible source has said this, it’s all speculation and fear mongering, the usual.

Could also be a lot of closures for redundancy positions from owning several publishers as well as having more reliance on 3rd party OEMs later on. Could also be some teams closing down with some being shown the door and some being merged in other teams or studios.

They have a good release cadence right now and goodwill from people happy with that release schedule on Gamepass, it really ain’t the time to close studios and release less content.

Yeah, really hope no studios get closed.

The following email was sent to all Microsoft Gaming employees, from head of gaming Phil Spencer:

Today we are sharing decisions that will impact colleagues across our organization. To position Gaming for enduring success and allow us to focus on strategic growth areas, we will end or decrease work in certain areas of the business and follow Microsoft’s lead in removing layers of management to increase agility and effectiveness. Out of respect for those impacted today, the specifics of today’s notifications and any organizational shifts will be shared by your team leaders in the coming days.

I recognize that these changes come at a time when we have more players, games, and gaming hours than ever before. Our platform, hardware, and game roadmap have never looked stronger. The success we’re seeing currently is based on tough decisions we’ve made previously. We must make choices now for continued success in future years and a key part of that strategy is the discipline to prioritize the strongest opportunities. We will protect what is thriving and concentrate effort on areas with the greatest potential, while delivering on the expectations the company has for our business. This focused approach means we can deliver exceptional games and experiences for players for generations to come.

Prioritizing our opportunities is essential, but that does not lessen the significance of this moment. Simply put, we would not be where we are today without the time, energy, and creativity of those whose roles are impacted. These decisions are not a reflection of the talent, creativity, and dedication of the people involved. Our momentum is not accidental—it is the result of years of dedicated effort from our teams.

HR is working directly with impacted employees to provide severance plan benefits (aligned with local laws), including pay, healthcare coverage, and job placement resources to support their transition. Employees whose roles were eliminated are encouraged to explore open positions across Microsoft Gaming, where their applications will be given priority review.

Thank you to everyone who has shaped our culture, our products, and our community. We will move forward with deep appreciation and respect for all who have contributed to this journey.

4% equal 9,000 employees from Microsoft is insane numbers. They practically has a state worth. Anyway, that’s in general, not just gaming. We will get more releases soon.

Shit, shit, shit, shit. Nothing gravy but shit.

There’s still so many things that we don’t know yet, even with this massive number.

I can’t say I’m exactly shocked about Everwild. Sucks for the studio though.

Yeah, the Everwild thing actually seems…completely reasonable to me.

Saw a post on reddit that Schreier gravy expects more games to be cancelled.

Once the rest of the US studios have their meetings.

Oh shit at first it looked like this had been overblown due to some tweets, with just King and Zenimax being hit, but with this Everwild news and Jason saying just now that we should expect more cancellations from USA studios im starting to get scared.

Perfect Dark be safe please, i know it’s supposed to be coming soon but still.. and same goes for Undead Labs and State of Decay 3, should be fine tho.

As a person who really liked Perfect Dark, even the Xbox 360 one (underrated game..), sorry for those who like Sea of Thieves but what a waste and crazy bad management Rare had, 1? game since 2008 and nothing to be expected until at least 2030 or further, which would be 22+ years with just 1 game, crazy..
