With WoW...does MS even care about FF14 anymore?

They said their intent is to bring the game to Xbox and they are having discussions with Xbox about issues which needs to be resolved first. Yoshida is as open as he can be about the topic and recently in 2021 put the ball in SE court with him saying the issues with Xbox are resolved now.

He didn’t need to put the ball in SE court at all and could’ve beaten the drum that Xbox is the problem, if his intent was to lie about it.

He is soon to become a saint. XD

That’s not true actually. Believe it or not, FFXIV was to be an Xbox exclusive. They showed it off back in 2005 at the Microsoft E3 conference. You can even see this area here was used in Shadowbringers which turned out to be the Crystarium. I don’t know what happened though, and instead the game ended going to PS3 and PC instead.

It made sense because Final Fantasy XI was already on Xbox 360, ending support for the platform only in 2016.

All this talk about Yoshi P having issues with putting a Final Fantasy MMO on Xbox ignores the fact there already was one there - and the whole marketing for FFXIV was designed to attract FFXI players to “upgrade” - so there’s little doubt in my mind the only reason XIV went PS3 and has not since expanded to Xbox is because Sony is paying for it to be that way.

Goes against what Spencer and Yoshida said. If the game would be time exclusive than Spencer couldn’t talk about it either. Does Spencer talk about FF7 Remake or KOTOR and confirmed those are coming?

Spencer never talks about the specifics of exclusivity deals by rivals.

Yoshi P is the head of the department of SE that had a Final Fantasy MMO on Xbox while simultaneously claiming he couldn’t have another Final Fantasy MMO on Xbox, because of Xbox policies.

Meanwhile Sony are paying for exclusivity deals for mainline Final Fantasy.

I know what seems most plausible to me.

Right. He doesn’t talk about time exclusive games and tell people those are coming. He isn’t allowed to. Guess what he did for FF14.

Square Enix can’t lie and blame Xbox without getting sued by Xbox either.

Just because he hasn’t promised he’d try to get other games, doesn’t mean that’s his cardinal rule. Maybe he doesn’t know all the particulars about the timed exclusivity window, maybe it had lapsed but Sony extended it as they did with 7R.

You keep ignoring my point, so I’m going to spell it out and hope you’ll respond to it this time;

  1. Final Fantasy already had an MMO on Xbox 360, into the Heavensward era even, that was under Yoshi P’s department.

  2. Sony are paying for exclusivity, timed or otherwise, on mainline Final Fantasy games. Why do you see a PlayStation console exclusive Final Fantasy and think it’s somehow different than the others?

Your point doesn’t matter, because companies can’t lie about other companies unless they love a army of lawyers kicking their door in. If SE was lying all the time, then why did Spencer not deny those accusations and instead said they hold talks about the problems?

So you’re just going to ignore it then. Fine, carry on talking to yourself.

Well you are ignoring the fact I posted multiple times now.

FF11 was on Xbox 360 and cross play with PS2. Policies change and that’s why you can’t use this game as an example.

There was a time Sony was all in on cross play and then they stopped. I remember the times Sony people argued like you and were 100% confident Sony isn’t the issue and blamed developers. Until developers had enough and actually came out with statements blaming Sony. The rest is history and it took years until Sony listened and allowed cross play again.

FF14 released in 2013. Was FF15 exclusive? World of Final Fantasy? No, because Sony decided in 2020 to make a FF deal. Timing doesn’t align with your theory.

Let’s say that if we’ll see WoW on Xbox before FF14, @Twinblade you’ll still say it’s on MS? XD

The most difficult port in human history, lmao. The fantastic thing is that SE made people believe in this charade because NOW the game is popular and Yoshi-P is cool, years ago nobody cared.

Read my fucking posts or don’t bother quoting me. I mentioned last year Yoshi came out and said the issues are resolved now and Xbox isn’t the problem anymore. Why would I blame Xbox, if the game doesn’t release in 2022?

Keep calm, you seem a little defensive of the “honor” of this game. Imo it’s only an example among many others attempts from SE/Sony to undermine Xbox.

“Why doesn’t Spencer threaten to sue Square Enix” isn’t a point, it’s divorced from reality. I won’t even get in to lecturing you on the realities of corporate diplomacy, but this really, really ain’t it.

Policies change, says you, but FFXIV released in 2010, A Realm Reborn in 2013 and Heavensward in 2015. The game existed and ran simultaneously while FFXI was running on Xbox 360. The same teams, the same department, the same publisher. The reasoning of it being Xbox’s fault rings hollow when they already had the exact same product running without any issue

I still want to know how you can look at Sony moneyhatting mainline FF and think that, somehow, FFXIV is exclusive but isn’t also being moneyhatted? I mean, if Sony are paying for it, why would SE do it for free???

I am not defensive about the game. I am fed up of people not reading and then coming in with a hot take.

It makes no sense indeed, crossplay, servers, dlcs, Yoshi-P interviews…al pr mumbo jumbo, otherwise the game would already be there, I think the first interview about FF14 on Xbox is from 360 era.

Like I said above, if SE will keep playing hardball, the best case scenario for Xbox is betting on WoW and undermine FF14, whose current popularity is largely dependant on WoW bad moment.

FF11 was cross play and released in 2002 long before Yoshida was even at Square Enix. You are wrong about the same people, because he and others weren’t there.

You are jumping to the wrong conclusion, too. FF11 was still cross play even though FF14 was out and didn’t get the feature. Those agreement can’t be reversed and will only count for new releases. I’ll go back to my Sony cross play example. Sony was against cross play a long time, but the old titles including FF11 weren’t stopped from being cross play.

The issues between Xbox and FF14 are down to basically two points of discussion. Firstly cross play, because just like Sony, Microsoft blocked cross play for a while. Even after they allowed it a few years ago, Microsoft demanded cross play to be optional. Something Yoshida wasn’t willing to agree to.

Secondly Yoshida who joined years AFTER FF11 released didn’t like the idea of paying for gold/plus + a MMO subscription. He asked Sony and Microsoft to not demand consumers to have Plus and Gold for FF14. Only one accepted his demands. FF11 needed Gold + a sub, but Yoshida didn’t hold those negotiations. The reason your FF11 evidence doesn’t make sense.

What would Spencer gain from lying himself? Something neither you or the other user can answer.

I will not deny that there was a WoW surge that increased the population of the game, but FF14 is not just popular because of that. The game is popular because its good and has released 4 award winning expansions in a row. Saying the games popularity is largely dependent on wow is extremely reductionist.

This whole post sounds like Yoshi P worship, something not uncommon with the FFXIV fanbase.

I think we could argue on the particulars till the cows come home, but what’s the last word? By your own admission Xbox has done what was claimed to be asked of them, yet where’s the port of the most successful game in the franchise?

I’ll say it one more time, after which I’m leaving the discussion - because ultimately a good WoW is more than competitive with XIV - but Sony is currently paying for mainline Final Fantasy to not release on Xbox. If a mainline entry of Final Fantasy is not coming to Xbox and maximising it’s ROI (Especially a subscription game) then it can be assumed it’s because Sony are paying for it.

If Sony are paying for exclusivity, SE have no reason to provide exclusivity for free. It’s really that simple.
