Why do some people still consider Sony to be the "Market leader"?

I mean they sort of are in terms of consoles sales and last generation they sold the most. Certainly in places like Europe they were dominant. Things are changing though. Theyre not being allowed to be as arrogant in the market as MS won’t let them get away with it this time so that’s a good thing.

Also as for T shirts…don’t really care for them. I do have game related ones. Not systems

About the only thing you can say using old school metrics is Sony “WAS” “Market Leader” Last gen until the Switch released. They have been outsold handedly since then in the console space.

Sony though seems to be the only gaming company that gets this sort of bump and benefit of the doubt from gamers and the media.

It’s time for a reset of perceptions as Sony has not been market leader in any real meaningful category in gaming in years now, they should not just get to carry that perception forever when reality has changed. Its similar to how people ignored the fact that the WII trounced the PS3 in sales yet people want to claim the PS3 was the sales winner of that gen. it does not count because of “reasons”

In that case, overwhelmingly Nintendo.

I’m in Ontario, Canada. And for funsies I went to Walmart.ca and searched “nintendo” and “playstation” and filtered for clothing. Nintendo had 1354 products. Playstation had 158.

Granted, those are not just shirts, but I still think it’s indicative. And it matches what I see in the world.

Nintendo: https://www.walmart.ca/search?q=nintendo&c=10017

Playstation: https://www.walmart.ca/search?q=playstation&c=10017

Oh, and Xbox had 74 products: https://www.walmart.ca/search?q=xbox&c=10017

In general, neither. Especially outside. Only times I have ever seen the PS shirt is when E3 was live with people. Other than that, maybe PS Experience but mostly E3.

There was a time when I saw a man with a ps shirt and I though “oh yeah, colombia is sony land” then inmediately I saw a man with a master chief shirt and thats when I realized the split of consoles in Colombia is 50:50.

Never saw anyone with nintendo shirts so that means they are irrelevant here.

Outside of gaming events like E3, Gamescom, etc., I have never seen anyone wearing any gaming shirt. It makes sense to wear it a gaming event but not in general.

The market treats them like the leader, as many others have said here.

They have the midia mind-share and the preference on third-party deals, I hopefully believe this should change once the PS4 gets left behind and the new Switch launches.

They’ll have more competition than ever before and publishers choosing only one platform is going to become a thing of the past.

Needless to say, Xbox is going to have their pipeline fixed and running like a dream too.

I wouldnt say being outsold by switch negates you of anything. Nintendo can sell as many systems as they want. Theyre not competing with ms and sony.

The media thing youre right about. Especially when it comes to preferred review platforms.

The bias in the media is insane. More so in europe

Any multiplat that comes out has a ton of reviews for ps5 and very little on xbox. Also with the timed exclusive deals sony did left and right the media was a little quiet on the subject last year.

But we got bucketloads of articles on bethesda and exclusivity.

Have to agree with this. If we want to play semantics, you can try to change the scope of the market to be something different than what most people think it is…and in certain contexts, it could be accurate. However of any corporation that has a platform, Sony currently generates the most revenue. I don’t have the data to back this up but I’d also bet they lead worldwide in brand mindshare related specifically to gaming.

With all that said, the scope of the gaming market and what it means to different people is changing quickly. Will be much blurrier. I expect Microsoft to pass Sony in total gaming revenue not long after the ABK acquisition however much of that revenue will be made outside of their primary storefronts. Will depend on what scope you apply to the market.

Console sales were always a poor gauge of market leadership to me. Like Super Nintendo eventually sold more than the Sega Genesis. PS3 eventually sold more than the Xbox 360. Yet if we were to compare software and service sales (which then translates to engagement and mindshare) Sega and Xbox easily came out ahead in those generations.

We really need a thread ignore. 2nd time I accidentally clicked in here and it’s just embarrassing.

There is. Change the green bell from tracking to muted. I always mute threads when I’m done with them. If you change your mind you can always search for the thread and change it back to tracking.

lol, it is what it is

I figured it was console install base, and since we’re still unfortunately in the cross-gen period, that means PS4+5, Xbox One+Series, and just Switch.

Much too lazy to look up sales figures but I had the impression that with those parameters it went Sony → Nintendo → Microsoft. They also had a good run of highly-rated games for a bit, though they certainly don’t corner the market on that. Anecdotally, the last generation in my circle was Nintendo as the side console, PlayStation as the default, and Xbox as the punching bag. Perception can take a while to catch up, though.

I’m not trying to twist facts or make excuses or whatever, just presenting why I saw things that way. The sooner Sony gets knocked down a peg, the better for the consumer though, I think. Even field makes everyone work harder for us :smiling_imp:

Edit: Oh and @PoderickPayne, I think I’ve only seen one PS shirt in like 25 years across New York and Pennsylvania, and that one person was wearing it ironically. Maybe it’s a west coast thing?
