Neither the PS5 nor Series X has met their expectations as a 4k console.
Weâve basically hit the lottery with what MS was able to release. Before official specs everyone was settled consoles would be no higher than 10tf and not rdna 2.0. MS not only has full RDNA 2.0 gpu, they have it at 12.155TFs. Thatâs insane lol
No they havenât. They are listing what Forza Horizon 4 is using in the ad featuring FH4. If they featured Ori theyâd list 4K 60FPS as that is what Ori is doing.
People are having a hard time accepting this truth.
There are many games where even series X and PS5 canât maintain advertised target resolution.
Itâs silly that people are only disappointed with series S.
On series S Marvel Avengers is 1440p highest in performance mode. Around 1300p most of the time. And drops to around 720p is extreme scenarios only. Similarly the way series X and PS5 drops to 1440p in many scenarios.
The drops to 720p is only in 60 fps mode. PS5 drops to 1018p and X to 1296p.
The fact is the series S is advertised as next gen, yet is dropping to 720P in games. There nothing next gen about that. Microsoft was touting its next gen capabilities such as Ray tracing, and we have games where the dev removed RT from a series s game, while the Series X and PS5 had it. Thatâs what people are concerned with, and its only going to get worse as games get more demanding.
If however you think 720P (or could go lower with new games) is next gen then thatâs fine. Go buy a series s and enjoy it.
Yes! Performance mode.
Youâre just throwing out irrelevant numbers here. Other RDNA 2 GPUâs arenât relevant to the thermal and power envelope of the Series S.
In fact - why donât you build a PC with the exact same profile and size as the series S, a single fan and exact same power draw envelope. Then show us what clock speed you can achieve. IF you do that then you can start comparing these things. But as it is youâre comparing apples to oranges. Its like saying - you can easily fit 5 people in a car look at âinsert large SUVâ when talking about a mini cooperâŚ
If you are okay with complaining about PS5 and series X for not meeting there targets then its fine complaining about series S as well.
And my choice will be always be series X because i know it targets higher resolution.
Weâre at a point where simply tech isnât going to keep rendering more and more pixels because it doesnât make sense and isnât efficient. Plus it has become pointless as the IQ benefit is minimal.
The Series S is built for a 1080p TV or 1440p monitor. Yes also for those with a 4K TV who want a second console or canât afford a full Series X.
So whilst the Series X dips below the 4K target so will the Series S. But whatâs the issue really - I have a Series S on my 1080p TV upstairs and its absolutely great. Its tiny, quiet and a great way to play games when the TV downstairs is out of action. Iâd absolutely NOT have bought a Series X just for upstairs.
This is the point youâre missing - next gen isnât determined by pixel counts - and the people who buy the series S in the main donât even know what a pixel count is. Nintendo will release a new switch that wonât come close to the power of the Series S - will anyone care? No. And the Series S is exactly the same. The option is there for those who care. But the majority who donât can save hundredsâŚ
Series S is already delivering a bunch of 120fps and 60fps games not possible on last gen. People that buy the S I would assume arent hardcore gamers and it isnt catered towards them so thats why the X exists.
Iâll rather they leave heat, coil whine and a larger case on the table. Series consoles have enough power and are achieving great results at this early stage.
The reason I think the ps5 is so big is a cost saving measure, they could of gone with a vapour chamber and have a more streamlined console. I do wonder how much the ssd setup cost on the PS5, because while the nand chips and ssd controller chip would be more expensive then the seriesXâs counterparts, overall costs maybe similar because the PS5s SSD is about 20% smaller.
I donât know about that, as being a massively larger product means higher costs with packaging, shipping, and warehousing.
LTTP. Answering the question of the OP: Because the right balance is way more important than a high spec of just one component or two. How often have we seen that a high performance component on paper was throttled/bottlenecked by others because you just overdone it. MY 2 cents. Kthxbai
Good point, I wonder why they did not go with with a vapour chamber then? Because while the heat sink on the Series is big its not such a cumbersome shape and size of the PS5s heatsink.
I changed my mind, I agree with OP.
I actually know a lot of hardcore gamers with a Xbox Series S, myself included. I donât have a 4K tv and Iâm not bothered by lower resolution i just want steady framerates and good performance. The Xbox One (Vanilla) was so bad for me in itâs final years. Yakuza Kiwami 2 being one game that really made me realize i need to upgrade to a next gen console. So far the S is doing exactly what i expected. My only disappointment is the devs prioritising 1440p over 60fps. Why is RE8 1440p 45fps when you can just do 1080p 60fps? Or better yet add the option for both. It takes two in 1080p 60fps is one the nicest looking games Iâve played on my S.
Jup, and since framerate usually is more CPU intensive than GPU intensive the Series S actually is a neat little machine. Lower price for a lot of people with small purses (which will be a big chunk of the market after Covid-19), also works for regions with less expendable income (India, Brazil, etc) and is also on the radar of diehard Sony fans that want an Xbox for the exclusives.
And that is not even counting the kids that get a console for in the bedroom after the price drops to 249/199 with a pack in game (a few months of game pass). This thing actually might start selling better than the Series X after a price cut.
I think if MS looks at the metrics for the games released for the S/X theyâll see that most of the third party games barely pushed the system compared to the PS5.
Why not allow the GPU clocks to increase till the TDP is 210+? Should improve fps and/resolution in the launch games as all of them had DRS.
Of course each game will have itâs own game clock based on how much of the gpu was utilized in the first place.
The 1825 clock of the X is the minimum conservative stable clock when 100% of the consoleâs capabilities are being used. For reference the 6800 has a game clock of 1815mhz and a boost clock of 2105mhz. Perhaps we will see new customizable clocks up to 2100+ mhz?
