Where does Xbox need to improve? | Let's be constructive about it

Talking about marketing, Sony is on a complete different level.

:eyes:

Damn

I’m in the US and don’t see a lot of commercials for any of these companies lol. The way people talked you’d think we were being bombarded with gaming advertisements

Here is the thing, is this going to draw in anyone who isn’t already a Stan of the series or enamored with Sony’s marketing/brand? Let’s say MS does something like this with Joanna and Perfect Dark, is that going to move the needle at all? Many here will probably say yes, but IMO it won’t.

I don’t want to be too negative about this subject but I think MS needs to hire some people and invest billion in marketing for Xbox in markets that are outside of the USA.

I’m in France and I can’t remember the last time I saw an Xbox ad that wasn’t some random sponsored tweet or some Internet banner (very rarely).

2 days ago, regarding Playstation and Horizon Forbidden West, I saw:

  • a TV ad (really well done, a great ad)
  • a billboard at a crossroad with a lot of traffic (and my town isn’t a big one)
  • Internet banners

All of it in 24 hours. It was the same for Deathloop on PS5, there was a TV ad for prime-time during a very popular show and Internet banners.

For Xbox, maybe I missed it myself but I saw nothing for Halo Infinite, Forza Horizon 5, Psychonauts 2, Flight Sim. Psychonauts 2 didn’t even have French voice acting while the first game with Majesco yes.

The last TV ad or billboard I saw from Xbox is probably more than a decade-old at this point. I don’t even remember. And of course Game Pass has absolutely 0 TV ad since the beginning (and a lot of people aren’t even aware of the simple fact that Game Pass exists sometimes). Last time when driving there was a nice Disney+ x Boba Fett billboard you couldn’t miss. You will never see it from MS, it’s alien to them. You can be sure that if Spartacus is something ambitious (it remains to be seen what it is exactly), Sony will market it everywhere (not saying this negatively).

Even Warner Bros did more marketing than them with some Back 4 Blood x Game Pass ads.

Their marketing presence is abysmal honestly. And I don’t think France is a little market or something. Especially when you want to reach ā€œ3 billion gamersā€.

But I guess they have more data than I have and they’re fine with their current marketing strategy ultimately.

Thanksfully I’m very confident that Bethesda will deliver with their Starfield marketing campaign.

one thing id like to see is more Gamepass TV ads/Youtube ads, especially one that shows big-name Games like (once the ATB acquisition finalizes) show Halo, Forza, Cod, Crash, Spyro, Fallout, games that’ll make people want Gamepass.

reminds me of this

Dashboard:

  • I’m ready for an overhaul

  • PiP support

• Better sharing options

  • Higher image quality of the dash, HDR

  • Streamline navigation

Controllers:

  • Elites should be a higher quality

Studios/Games:

  • Larger presence in Japan

  • More single player titles now that ActiBliz is in the pipeline

Support:

  • Give me a comparable refund policy to Steam

Marketing:

  • More events throughout the year

Game Pass:

  • I don’t think a AAA game a quarter is going to cut it anymore. One per month is more reasonable, if not more as the service continues to grow, it doesn’t have to be first-party strictly.

  • A better curation of the ā€œcoming soonā€ tab—I shouldn’t have to go to external sites to see upcoming GP titles

The ratio of FPS games to TPS games associated with xbox is very high

I just want that to change

Can’t have both the consoles so want TPS action on Xbox with right focus to be a thing

This is why I want MS to buy Ubisoft. AC and Watch Dogs will fill up that gap for me

I will want them to make a super hero game as well

At this point, I wouldn’t mind if it is from DC or Marvel

And offcourse, all of it ties to Gamepass

MS just need to improve on their PR and when they have showcase events. SONY not only have more state of play events to look forward too, they also show off far more gameplay in them. MS also when showing off games, need to make it clear on what system the footage is being captured on and need to really start to make a better case for showing off the Series X.

It really is time now for MS to have a Forza event and show the game off and maybe it’s time to show some proper gameplay from Hellblade 2 , Just to build up hype going into the summer

I also think MS need to look upgrade more games to FRB, even if its not 100% all the time, more so if its true that SONY is working on its own BC style programme. It would also be nice to see MS make a LIVE Arcade-style section on Gamepass and look to strike a deal with the likes of SEGA/TATIO for simple straight Arcade ports to Gamepass

MS has done and got so much right this gen already. But PR is really an aera where they are lacking and I don’t mean that as an insult to hard working members of the team, it’s just gamers like to see more gameplay and know what system the capture is taken off.

@pg2g The difference is that all this is not needed in the US because the brand name is already very strong, they have to try a lot harder here in Europe to win back some of the goodwill and brand recognition that the 360 had and the things that @anon74828371 proposed is a good start. Also they have to iron out problems with localization, for example when you choose Greek as the dashboard language (besides the laughable translation) the BC games don’t show in your achievement list and clubs are not working properly which is probably the reason for the achievement list bug. This is a bug that it exists for more than 4 years now and it’s still there.

@power On your list I would also add an option to calibrate the deadzone of the analogue sticks in the accessories app (now it is only available for the Elite pads) and add an option to choose the time that the pad powers down when idle (like how is there not an option for this?). Also make MS Rewards available to more markets, it has being what 7 years that this is a thing? and my market apparently is still not supported.

@TeamAndromeda They definitely need more shows/events and an Arcade Corner section in the store would be freakin’ awesome (still too good to be true though), we are saying how good is the digital era that we live in but in terms of game preservation/history and publishers having their legacy titles available we are a long way from being decent in this area (hell we don’t have classics like the original Resident Evil games available right now which is ridiculous).

All I’m gonna say is to wait for the games to release and see how each year looks individually, because when many games get announced back to back, rumored and leaks, and most are in 1ts person, you perceive that that’s gonna be how most of the games overall are.

Looking back at the past 2-3 years, you’ll realize that FP/S representation in XGS portfolio was Halo Infinite… and Grounded (which has a 3rd person mode too).

This year: Redfall, Starfield, Forza Motorsport. Now depending on how Starfield manages its 3rd person view, the year will admittedly be steering more towards FP/S (based on these 3 games alone though, don’t know what might get annojcned and released late year) But Starfield is apparently overhauling their 3rd person mode, according to a LinkedIn page of a dev.

Now let’s see 2023 prediction:

  • Hellblade 2 - 3rd person
  • Avowed - first person, 3rd person mode maybe
  • Contraband - 3rd person, seemingly vehicle focused though so I don’t know if that ā€œcountsā€

I just counted the ā€œbigā€ games that are likely to be released in that timeframe. I think it’s gonna look balanced when eventually the games release and you look back on each year individually. But I think for people who just don’t like FP and prefer TP religiously, it’s never gonna look enough unless it’s closer to 80/20 than 50/50 or 60/40. And it’s fine, I guess, preference is fine, as long as no one is smug or dismissive about it.

That being said, do I think there’s room for more third person action, SP focused games? Definitely, at least 2 more would be much better.

They have a perfect internal studio for that, The Coalition. I’ll be absolutely shocked and disappointed in MS and Coalition equally if Coalition don’t end up being focused on those games (on top of Gears), because literally their best work and what they got high reviews for was the TPS cinematic action campaigns for Gears 4, 5, and Hivebusters.

An (imo eventual) Asobo acquisition should also absolutely produce a 3rd person adventure game like Plague Tale for Xbox. If they get them solely for the live service ability (with MSFS) then they better be acquired by Focus.

Imo the camera angle ratio is waaay behind other issues within Xbox, for many people it isn’t even an issue, it is only from a diversity perspective, we don’t want a Sony-like uniformation on genres/type of games, that is true.
