how? steam os will run all windows only games perfectly?
well… to be honest this forum just became a soft reset era, so much people “cheerleading” for ms failure, guess I was right not frequently use this forum anymore
may i get a flag because of this, but that’s I’m feeling with this forum right now…
I don’t think so, who do you see installing Steam OS on their PCs and Laptops besides a handful of people? Steamdeck is one thing because it comes pre-installed, but it’s a minority of gamers that do so and more of a side system than the main way to play games due to it being so limited and not supporting the most popular games on earth.
There always have been native Linux games, just not the big, popular stuff as Linux for gaming has always been close to irrelevant.
So many people every year are always going, year of ‘Linux PC domination’. It always ends up being wrong, no matter how much people are online talk it up as something that’s going to happen this time.
I think gamers (at least the hardcore ones) have been getting tired of the Windows experience and Valve is getting closer and closer to providing them an off ramp.
I consider it a threat, but they still have a compatibility problem to resolve. I don’t think we should minimize the potential impacts.
I use Windows on a daily basis (home and at work) and I have yet to understand how one would get tired of the Windows experience. I can customize it however I want, it’s easy to install and to use and is compatible with everything under the sun.
I’d consider myself a hardcore gamer and I usually try to give everything a chance. I gave Linux 1 weekend before I realized Windows was better.
Linux could get better, but it won’t get better by itself. Unless the industry at large decides to support it (which they don’t seem like they want to), it just won’t happen. The community won’t be able to resolve all problems unless the people who create the software want it to work there in the first place.
They got pretty far without unofficial support that’s for sure, but to me it seems like they are hitting a wall.
I would argue its the ‘core-lite’ audience. Gamers who mostly play AA and Indies on PC and don’t engage with the AAA zietgeist games or multiplayer games at all for that matter. I don’t know why anyone who plays games like CoD or League or GTA V would want to install a SteamOS on their desktop PC.
Moreover what Influencer/Streamer is going to want to use SteamOS over Windows? Why risk not being able to play the latest popular game just to stare at a UI that was meant for handhelds or TVs while on their Desktop computer? Why risk incompatibility with their hardware which they depend on for income? Like whats the gain here.
Valve is getting closer and closer to providing them an off ramp.
An offramp to what? Incompatibility with PC’s most popular games? Incompatibility with the hardware you’ve already bought?
Like what is the off-ramp to?
Let’s put ourselves in 2026. GTA VI has been out on consoles for however long and it’s now coming out on PCs. Oh and Riot Games has finally gotten around to finishing the League MMO. These are going to be two of the absolute BIGGEST PC launches in the last decade. Neither of which will work on SteamOS. They will, however, work on Windows and XboxOS.
My post already acknowledged a compatibility problem, I assume they are working on closing that gap. If the compatibility problem was gone, going to SteamOS would be a no brainer for many.
This is very much a ChromeOS coming to take on Windows moment, and Microsoft needs to make their product better before the competition catches up.
they are definitely a threat and MS should have had this shit done long ago but some are exaggerating on a lot of this Steam stuff
If its going to take MS years to get their shit sorted sure, that would be a dangerous situation for them to be in but it’s clear Ronald and the team know the issues they need to sort and now they finally have something they need to take seriously, they know they can’t sit around on their asses
Steam also have their own shit to sort out, its going to come with its own caveats
Its a good thing Xbox literally already has a console OS they can build off of. It’s not like they’re starting from scratch. They just need to add more of what makes PC gaming great (default back compat, default forward compat, default scalability, no multiplayer paywall, moddability, hardware compatibility, etc.)
