Video Game Market Analysis Thread

What experts? I think you missed the point eniteely. Npd might have data for specialsied bundles to not include them. They have no idea if retailers are just bundling games with basic SKU which theyve done. Ive already given you examples in famitsu.

Regsrdless its good for sony. But both of those games are cross gen. Ps4 would have equated for a lot of those sales too.

Fanboys feeling are hurt because PlayStation bundles games with their new console? I wonder if the typical Fanboy has issues counting Game Pass subs when the GP sub is bundled into the Xbox Series S or Pringles?

I expect HFW sell around 20m over the next few years. Sony first party is a powerhouse now and obviously, Fanboys ain’t too pleased. Horizon especially is despised by them. Probably cause it looks so damn good. We also had multi page threads about aloy being ugly. If that ain’t nitpicking and scraping the bottom of the barrel, then what is?

sales data has shown the game charting from time to time showing strong legs. It even has a full blown PS5 only expansion in the works, releasing in a couple of months

Chris has single handedly destroyed an fanboy narrative

Straight from the source. Bundles are not included in NPS sales numbers.

It’s even worse in the overall. It’s not even in top 20. Also, the sale doesn’t include digital. I thought it does.

Edit: Read the wrong one. Top 17. Ouch.

Shame Xbox didn’t top or beat PS5, especially on the low price of Series S and it being easily available. Hopefully this year with Starfield and Forza it’ll move some consoles. Series S bundles with Starfield next black Friday could definitely help!

I think if people were expecting Xbox to suddenly close the gap after PS4 outsold Xbox One more than 2 to 1 they were perhaps being unrealistic, but it looks like the gap is closing and I think we’re gonna see it close more and more as the generation goes on.

On one hand, it looks bad that such a cheap console isn’t beating the competition

On the other Xbox had absolutely nada in regards to big games last year, so the fact they did well despite coming third is good, if they had Starfield Series S would have been flying off the shelves

So things could definitely be a lot worse but xbox needs to get it’s big games out, a cheap console will only do so much going forward

In the US I thought the possibility was there, especially early in 2022 when Nadella announced they were selling more consoles than Sony. Guess PS5 caught up in the last few months to claim victory for last year.

They had god of war. Xbox lack of major first party game rffectively made it impossible. 2023 it will sell even better though.

The fact Xbox did well as it did without an exclusive attraction is a good sign. It could have gone Xbox One March route of downward but it held up nicely.

Hardware Sales

Switch – 74.690 (28.049.455)

PlayStation 5 – 44.113 (2.506.658)

PlayStation 4 – 1.099 (9.422.994)

Xbox Series X|S – 1.052 (401.186)

3DS – 93 (24.596.902)

Besides a mediocre opening for One Piece, not much to talk about. Low software sales for everything all around pretty much, as expected for this time of year. It does seem PS5 has found a new baseline of about 40k, problem there is a good chunk of those consoles are leaving the country to be scalped in China.

Xbox Series below Xbox One in the first 2 years in the market in the US isn’t great, I do think that lack of Series X stock is screwing Xbox over right now while Sony seems to have mostly solved their stock issues but yeah, Microsoft gotta figure it out asap, it’s clear most people want the X and not S.

They need to start focusing on the XSX.

XSS are sitting on shelves.

One caveat to this is NPD obtains numbers from participating retailers and Microsoft has not reported numbers to anyone. So while the numbers provide a general idea and are the best we’re going to get, they are not the absolute numbers. Just keep in mind to allow for some allowances because Microsoft is not reporting numbers.

I think it’s less to do with Series X vs Series S and more to do with lack of games as gamers have still been given very little reason to upgrade from last gen to a series S

No big first party games require a Series S/X, no Starfield or Redfall last year and the huge casual games like Fifa and CoD are still on last gen, not to mention PS5 has all the hype going for it and it being so hard to get before vs Series makes it even more desirable

To me all it shows is that a cheap console and GP can only do so much, it needs those big exclusives

Honestly quite bad and unexpected numbers considering that’s the strongest MS’s market, back in 2020 i was sure Xbox Series would be able to do better numbers than in the X360 vs PS3 gen, but at this point a miracle would be needed.

While 2023 should be better, this scares me for the next 2-3 years, as right now, Sony should have an easier time than ever this generation to close more exclusivity deals, even from West developers as they did last year with KOTOR.

On the bright side, PC’s just getting stronger and stronger so i expect almost everything to ship on there on day 1 too, we’ll see with Metal Gear Solid and Persona 6, hopefully they won’t skip PC, not even for 6 months.
