Video Game Market Analysis Thread

No but the income of games makes Xbox attractive to maintain sales even during shortages. There will be a time this gen when there aren’t shortages so MS will have to balance how many consoles to send to Japan on a monthly basis.

It’s Sad there’s not one any Xbox exclusives titles selling in the charts for years.

On the overall charts, Halo failed to chart in the top 20 last year. Forza came in right at the 20th mark.

Both entered the charts at number 2, but failed to sell enough copies overall. Forbidden West & GT7 outsold both Forza and Halo. Even the Show outsold both Forza and Halo and thats a baseball game where its digital sales on Xbox werent even included. They were outsold by Miles Morales in its SECOND year. They were outsold by Back4Blood a massive flop.

hopefully things will improve

Have you heard of Game Pass?

Xbox is in another world that many seem to have problem to adapt. Sure worked fine for those who kept saying TV is dead, I’m sure you can do the same for this without saying sale is dead. The point is, there’s more ways to be successful than just one way.

I can likely see metrics like this changing when game subscriptions become the ‘norm’.

For example GT7 may have outsold Forza in sales (I haven’t checked) but has it actually been played by more players than Forza? (I suspect unlikely).

The last figure I saw from Playground was that over 20 million people have played Forza Horizon 5 and that’s a ridiculous number (this was before the Hot Wheels DLC), I doubt GT7 has even done 10 million.

When Xbox/PC GamePass numbers aren’t included in figures like this it isn’t really comparable.

Did you know Forza had over 10million CONCURRENT players? There is a great article about it regarding kubernetes. That is such an absurd number it kind of puts a damper on your weird hand wringing.

What is this? 2017?

People who post things like this, I doubt exists in the same reality as the rest of us. Sales figures? What’s next, DVD sales of TV shows?

Imagine talking about sales charts, but at the same time forgetting about the existence of game-pass service.

Improve in terms of what? The more subs gamepass gets the fewer retail sales but more players

Xbox still has high 3rd party software sales. Look at Elden ring and even on xbox alone it sold incredibly.

The old physical (and digital) sales model with the 30/70 split is kind of antiquated and inflexible. I don’t know how it will work out in the end, but Game Pass seemingly offers a lot of flexibility for both game developers and Xbox. Like developers can opt for a straight payment to have their game on GP, or maybe they can be paid by downloads, or hours played, etc… there can also be incentives/bonus to hit milestones, it just seems like a natural progression how games are sold.

Physical game sales and “charting” are good for marketing, but it isn’t an indicator of how good the games actually are or how much people are playing them. With physical sales (only) developers are forced to design a game with front loaded appeal, maybe also adding anti-used game elements. The industry was going a bad direction before digital came into play. Yes now we have microtransactions, dlc, day-one patches, etc… but game variety returned. Game Pass is now changing things again, let’s see how it works out.

Probably explains the offering for essential base with those titles.

Sony is incredibly stagnant with ps plus, theyve had roughly the same numbers for 17 months
