Will any game ever dethrone Fortnite ? I guess GTA6 has a chance.
It wonât for awhile, because of the amount of investment it takes to keep it at the top. No other publisher would spend that amount. They had very modest net profits last year for the amount of revenue they made. 2023 Revenue $5.6 B, Gross Income $720 M. and that isnât Net Profit after expenses and stock payouts.
Is that Epic as a whole or just Fortnite ?
Epic as a whole. Fortnite accounts for 85% of Epic Revenue. They actually live and die with the game now.
RIP Unreal Tournament
Fortnite is very profitable, I donât think the picture youâre painting is fully accurate.
Itâs more so their other ventures where they are bleeding money, aka the Epic storefront, various purchases that have ended up being a bust for them.
I wasnât painting a picture, just giving market stats. Call of Duty and other massive online games make money but also cost a lot more to run keep content updated. Every kb, mb, gb of data running through a server is raising fast in inflationary costs. Twitch is an example of that. Just economics.
Oh for sure, Iâm just more saying if youâre going to bring up those data, the full context behind it should be listed too since we know Epic is on record saying theyâve lost billions investing into their storefront and various other investments. Theyâre only floating because of Fortnite so I agree with your larger picture view of it.
Agreed, from a pure video game sales perspective, Fortnite is the best of the best now and I believe for the coming years. GTA will also do great. But as we are in the Video Game Market Analysis Thread, Nintendo has to be the best Profits to Earnings Ratio than any other publisher. They spend by far the least amount of money in development and sell at the highest price for retail. Iâd like to see Sony and MS invest in similar games to Nintendo(size, scope, quality) and not just the massive budget live services.
I think this is more that Fortnite made them way bigger financially that they used to be. Dead Fortnite, and they will lose a lot of their market cap but more in line of where they should be. They will not die but decrease, sure.
I would have expected UE to be a much larger. Does that account for most/all of the remaining 15%?
1.1 million in December is strong. Next year will be even better for a few reasons.(not ranking in order of importance) 1) Call of Duty marketing and Game Pass Day 1 launch. 2)Series S will hit that $200 sweet spot next holiday where casuals jump in. 3)Xbox strong first party lineup.
If CoD stops coming to last gen consoles its going to give Xbox sales a huge push. More people will upgrade to current gen and they will see all the advertising for Xbox and Game Pass and pick this console.
FIFA/FC is not in the Top 20 for Europe? And sold less than It Takes Two or NBA 2K23? That doesnât seem right. Or am I missing something?
Yeah, the top 3 games are missing if you donât click through to the image
FC 24 is #1 and FIFA 23 is #3, what are you looking at?
Yep haha. Can miss it at first glance.
Good grief. Yeah, didnât notice that it started at #4.
And I believe this is console only, not including PC sales right?
Itâs interesting when you start counting by publisher:
- 5 EA
- 4 Nintendo
- 3 Microsoft/ABK/Bethesda
- 3 Take-Two
- 2 Sony
- 1 Ubisoft
- 1 Capcom
- 1 WB
The US 2023 games seem to paint a even more interesting pictureâŚ
- 5 Microsoft/ABK/Bethesda
- 3 EA
- 3 Nintendo
- 2 WB
- 2 Sony
- 2 Capcom
- 1 Embracer
- 1 Square Enix
- 1 Bandai Namco
This is Mat Piscatellaâs data but the absence of Take-Two makes me wonder how accurate it is.
