Yes. Sony’s pitch was probably something along the lines of “We’re already by far the market leader in the West. You don’t need Xbox. You only need Playstation for this title to be a hit in the West”. Which works when they are outselling Xbox 2:1… Not so anymore when Xbox inevitably matches them or surpasses them.
I was looking at recent videos on the Xbox YT regional sub-channel for my country (Italy) and I found an amusing (and also concerning) pattern: 3rd party marketed games like Destiny 2 The Witch Queen or LEGO Skywalker are fully dubbed in trailers, while MS 1st party games…are not. That only shows how much Xbox is lacking in localization department (not big news), I hope that adding another big company strong in localization like AB, after Zenimax, will open Xbox eyes on their backwards and asinine stance with localization and marketing outside NA.
Hoping some others will help with their thoughts or research.
It looks like the biggest argument for the Microsoft acquisition of Activision-Blizzard potentially not going through is based on a competition decrease or monopoly being formed in the game streaming subscription service market. While that is a narrow market, I’d still like to destroy this notion with numbers if possible.
As such I’m hoping to get a full list of game streaming subscription services and the associated number of subscribers. Below is what I have so far:
EA Play - 13 million subscribers
Ubisoft Plus - ? subscribers
PS Spartacus - PS Now and PS Plus - 40+ million subscribers
GeForce Now - 12 million subscribers
Amazon Luna - ? subscribers
Google Stadia - 2.4 million subscribers
Parasec -? subscribers
There are some others that I’m curious if they would fit into this categorization like Nintendo Online which gives access to an NES/SNES library as part of the service. Anyways, very curious on what I’ve missed and should add or what other thoughts you have.
From where you getting GeForce and EA numbers?
GeForce numbers look massive
It’s been a while since we got updated numbers on both so I padded slightly, last updated numbers were 12 million for GeForce and 13 million for EA Play, but I can adjust to last reported as that probably makes sense.
Geforce:
EA Play:
EA numbers skyrocketed mainly thanks to GP.
But wouldn’t Microsoft be able to argue that streaming is a supplementary service to Game Pass? That first and foremost it’s a game subscription service? That their main goal isn’t to replace the console experience but to add to it?
Oh I agree, just saying this is what has been brought up by Hoeg and others.
I’m not sure the overall subscription gaming service market. There would be all kinds of stuff there.
Well seeing as the Xbox One was absolutely dreadful at Launch(probably worst than the Wii U) this is not a surprise at all.
Xbox Series being 70% sales compared to PS5 is shockingly good still. Wonder if Xbox can make it 80% by holidays?
Without any Bethesda, ActiBlizz, or the real full 1st party force yet
Isn’t this estimate wrong though? as Phil said it sold over 12 million, and has sold more than any Xbox previously by that time frame.
Yeah some estimates I saw were closer to 13 than 12
So why downplay it like this? When everyone should just say it sold over 12 million according to Phil Spencer.
Didn’t Phil say “shipped over 12m” instead of “sold”? Someone correct me.
Yeah, but shipped and sold are very close due to the fact that you can’t find the console in stores. (at least here in the US)
Interesting. The Series X is impossible to find over here in Europe but the Series S is and has been available everywhere here for a long while.
Sony marketing team is top tier. Some of the best
This sort of stuff definitely what Xbox lacks. PlayStation put there product of the minds of casuals.
Xbox should really start getting commercials and billboards up in the U.K…
I’ll be driving past that billboard in Leeds on Friday on my way to Harrogate for work
