I think Sony abandoning Japan is a stupid decision .

And Japanese publishers still favor PlayStation, Sony must know some real dirty secret because holy shit

That rhetoric is dying. Today, Falcom’s president acknowledged that PS is dying in Japan and that they are prepping to jump over to Switch soon. This is also true of many other smaller JP companies. It’s really only Square who has a Sony boner and that’s because of the constant moneyhats. Atlus with Persona as well, I guess. I can’t think of anything else past that though.

Unless things change, Sony is going to have to start throwing around some serious cash because even if you want to attribute the hardware sales to lack of supply, the software sales over there are terrible

They will be able to hold onto FF/Square because their games usually perform well in the west where PS is much stronger, plus their games are much more demanding and require hardware well beyond what switch is capable of so they are kind of forced to stay with Sony for now

But I see many AA and smaller devs jumping ship

Great, didn’t know that, seems like a good opportunity to help them make the jump to Xbox as well.

i’m curious on how handheld series S will perform in JP and global in general

Yep. I stay in tune with the followings of these smaller JP devs and more and more of them are becoming dissatisfied with Sony/PS. Falcom was a shining example of a hardcore Sony loyal company and, due to shareholder pressure, the president ultimately had to admit that the current state of PS in Japan is “dull” (his own description). Shareholders among the smaller companies are putting the pressure on to jump to Switch due to ever faltering PS sales (Falcom’s latest Trails game underperformed, they admitted it, and yes they blamed the state of PS in Japan). It was actually quite shocking to see them talk about PS like that, it means these smaller devs are starting to not care about their relationship with Sony (which is fitting, because Sony clearly does not care for them either). There is also some other examples like the new Neptunia game from Compile Heart being a PS exclusive, performing pretty mediocre, and then almost immediately announcing a Switch version afterwards, and Cyberconnect2 now porting .hack to Switch, despite years ago, saying “we can’t port it to Switch because it would harm our relationship with Sony.”.

Handheld Series S? That wouldn’t be feasible in the next five years or so, and I’m being generous lol.

That will entirely depend on MS investments. If these companies are describing PS in Japan as “dull” then I doubt Xbox is even a thought at all currently.

Xbox’s offer to Japan shouldn’t be focused on the consoles. It’s Game Pass, PC, and Cloud, and then the consoels.

This, console is just part of it.

Switch being 23M deep in Japan is insane.

I wonder what the next Nintendo console will be, I think they struck gold with this hybrid console style, they just need more power.

All they need is exactly that and not even 4K resolution lol. Id be happy if they just have me 1080p60fps consistently.

All the more reason to get GamePass on Switch.

Aaaaaand Switch just took all 30 slots on the top selling games for the week. This is the third time this year. There were also many months where it was 28/30 or 29/30. Now you see why even the smaller Japanese devs are shitting their pants realizing they need to adapt to this thing.
