Sony is going in on live service. Im guessing that it wasnt sustainable with rising costs to focus on just selling games. They need to offset costs with continuous content sales.
Overall, we are going to see a lot fewer games published by Sony this generation.

Software sales seem about as expected. Switch took all top 10 slots. Zelda still leading. Cool that Mega Man Battle Network is still there, I wonder how much success Capcom was anticipating for it because it completely surpassed my expectations.
Switch selling over double PS5. Recently Jim Ryan had an interview with Famitsu talking about the importance of the Japanese market and how Playstation is committed to it and whatnot, that showcase pretty much told a different story though. Unless Jim actually thinks that Foamstars + Project Q will be the next Splatoon + Switch in Japan ?
Yep, I’ve stopped commenting on it really, but it’s either that it crashed, or we’re back to that theory that Famitsu went overboard with their calculations in 2021-2022 and are now course correcting it.
It isn’t all sunshine for the PS ecosystem there either though. The Famitsu Top 30 got posted and it’s interesting.
0 PS5 games charted and only 2 PS4 games charted in the low 1000s. The mystery of what these 37k (this week) PS5s are playing continues. Japan continues being Nintendo-or-nothing land.
PS software sales continue being anemic. I and some others even said it before but we could soon end up in a world where a lot of the small, niche JP stuff just goes Nintendo or Nintendo/PC only for the most part (this is a position that PS used to enjoy before the Switch). As long as Xbox can keep landing the big content, and the bigger “niche” content that probably won’t drop PS though, that’s fine. Just absolutely do -not- do a late 360/Xbone move and essentially pull out of the region again.
Apparently not, because they still can’t solve their supply issue in the US either. Since US is their biggest market it gets the most stock, but it’s still having issues.
Maybe. But people misunderstand the demand and supply relationship. If demand is higher than supply then you have difficulty easily locating stock and especially regionally stock shortages. This means that demand appears lower than it actually is even if supply is still theoretically in excess.
I don’t know what stock levels are there but it’s not as simple as counting units sold necessarily.
Same thing happens in U.K. people point to a website where series X is in stock to suggest demand is really low but then often those websites are regionally stocked or selling bundles only for members etc…
I don’t know elsewhere, but here in Italy Xbox Series X has become easier to find. It has been available for many days in online stores without being forced to get it bundled with Forza and in local stores too. Let’s hope it continues at this pace in the following months, especially in view of the arrival of Starfield.
I’ve been saying for years (& I have posts here) that Xbox will naturally find its place & see its sales pick up just because Sony cannot ever live up to the insane hype surrounding the brand. Aka Xbox will become popular not just because of its own output but mainly also as a result of Sony going in the opposite direction (downhill).
Some people might not realize it but a vast majority of their PS5 sales come from brand loyalty based on past output, namely the PS4 era output. It’s a purchase with forward thinking in mind, not based on the actual library of the console. People expect them to deliver & they’re hungry for their AAA’s.
We already have a tiny little glimpse at how that wishful thinking future is going off the rails with Sony’s recent showcase, aka GAAS, GAAS & more GAAS. PS5 owners might be wondering 'why the f did i buy a PS5?".
That’s when Xbox can start to do well. It’s not a herculean task or insurmountable problem to overcome, it’s simply a matter of delivering a better experience than Sony. Word of mouth does the rest, i.e. brand loyalty only goes so far because sooner or later PS5 customers will want their PS4 era AAA walking simulators with shiny Avatar style visuals which they were promised (take Spiderman 2’s false advertising as an example, whereby its teaser trailer 2 years ago with “captured on a PS5” plastered on the footage was a generation ahead of what they eventually delivered).
It’s stuff like that which eventually has an impact.
There are a few events coming soon after which will give us some more insight. First is the upcoming showcase. Will there be a new hardware reveal that could explain the stock issues? After that Diablo, Starfield, and any surprise games. Is MS holding on to stock so the console can be sold in upcoming bundles?
It comfortably holds off competition from Street Fight 6, which debuts at No.2 in the UK charts. It’s not a strong physical showing for the Capcom game, certainly when compared to the popularity of its Resident Evil games at boxed retail. However, the vast majority of its sales will come via digital channels, and so its boxed performance won’t tell us a great deal on how the game has truly done.
79% of its boxed sales were on PS5, 13% on Xbox and 8% on PS4. When digital comes in, expect Xbox’s share to be a little better.
Well what do we learn? All this port and games begging, is nothing but empty barking. They don’t buy games simple af.
I tell you what, it will not take any longer until Capcom and Konami do awake for understanding that, Xbox is a non viable platform. MGS3 Remake, Dragon Dogma 2 will also fail on Xbox. When this time comes, then they will realise it’s better to stick making excuses for Sony. Hell developing for an additional platform is expensive.
You shouldn’t think too much about physical sales. When GamesIndustry published the article discussing the digital only release of Alan Wake 2, it was revealed that more than 80% of Xbox game sales are digital. For a few years now, most physical games have only sold between 10 and 20% on Xbox. If many publishers were dissatisfied, they would have stopped supporting Xbox long ago.
It took more time, but Octopath Traveler 2 crossed a million sales. This game is far better than the first and might be Square’s best game in a long time. I’m happy the game turned out successful after all.
I finished it on Switch, but let’s also hope that Nick’s little teases about this game coming to Xbox turn out true
