Velocity Architecture vs PS5 SSD

I agree. No way Sony went into the PS5 saying they wanted variable clocks. Its a reactionary move.

People shouldn’t underestimate Sampler Feedback and Sampler Feedback Streaming

Kinda amusing given the discussion of R&C and whether/how XSX could do the same kinda portal shifting stuff. Note: Try to ignore the tweet’s framing and instead focus on the video/commentary in that snippet instead, heh.

Is an ssd somthing that even scales in performance in a game?

Hard to say because we have yet to see the games designed purely with SSD in mind. But loading times are faster that’s for sure

I would of thought games would be designed with the lowest common denominator, I would not be surprised if sata ssds are the min requirement.

This video I found interesting, at around tge 11min mark he explains that ssd’s even though some drives have faster write speeds , random access speeds are not to different.

It would really only matter on exclusives. And even then less so if Sony is serious about supporting PC.

Yes, I wonder How Sony will handle There cloud service, I wonder if they are going to put a load of PS5s in Azure data centres?

That would be weird seeing the PS5s in 3U or 4U racks with their retail design. I wonder what industrial design they have for it.

Do you have a link for the whole video ? Or a transcript of what he said. I’m not sure I understand.

I’m hearing that yes, some things can’t be done on Series X

The question was “can it be done on series x” with answer of “yes”, but thats just a clip so it would be nice to have more of the answer giving more context than a silly sound bite.

Ok, thank you. I wasn’t sure. But yeah having the whole context and answer would be great.

Found it with my detective scan ability : PlayStation Developer Interview (PS5 Exclusive!!! ) - YouTube

It’s old news folks. The interview is from August 16th of last year. The bit is taken at 1:19:25. The dev didn’t say that there will be no differences between the two platforms, but that it will be minimal because the jump from an HDD to an SSD is already massive and things could be more easily scaled back to accomodate the difference.

Eh? The question was specifically if what R&C does can be done on XSX and the answer is yes.

Yeah, the answer is “yes”. But in the tweet, his answer is cut off. In the video, he explains that because LOD is so scalable now and both machines have an SSD, there is no limit about what you can and can’t do on both machines. So yeah, R&C portals from the demo are doable on Xbox Series X because of scalability. That was pretty much known.

The commentary in that tweet though, is wrong. He doesn’t say that PS5 SSD specs are BS or a scam, quite the contrary. The dev just says that it’s not some incredible tech that will enable stuff that is not possible on XSX (and XSS), that would be lying.

Like what I am hearing about the Velocity

We gotta wait for actual current gen games before making comparisons though.

Known to some of us, yes. To many others, that portal stuff was presented as proof that the PS5’s SSD was unique in being able to do stuff no other machine could do.

Yeah, I mean the PS5 SSD is cool stuff, but doesn’t bring much to close the gap with the Series X. Those who thought that it would, were lying to themselves. On paper it is still 2x faster, but we know it’s irrelevant in most cases. I don’t think Cerny and Co. lied, it’s just that it was not based on real data management scenarios.

You can have a Ferrari, but you need proper roads for getting the most out of it. So it’s basically useless on dirt roads and in traffic. That’s how I see it.

Many are having a hard time excepting what PS5’s SSD can do. It will definitely have advantages for sony and games running on PS5. But not the kind of advantage everyone is thinking off.

It will simple make working on PS5 easier. If there is anything same running on series X, it will take some more time make things working on series X as compared to PS5. That’s it.

I am indeed having a hard time accepting the proclamations that 8-9 GB/s is larger than 11-12 GB/s.
