The six nominees for GOTY at TGA revealed - No place for Forza Horizon 5, Psychonauts 2 and Deathloop nominated

Starfield likely doesn’t get nominated next year due to the very dumb arbitrary date cut off. What a joke.

Isn’t the cut off date 15/11? And Starfield 11/11. I think they’ll manage to get it in there.

Maybe they’ll force it in

BGS slipped in before with Fallout 4. They won’t risk pissing off BGS fans if the game is up to par.

Bwthesda also gives reviewers like a month given the size. It’s easier to convince coworkers who have yet to play to hold their nose and vote for the next game from Todd Howard over having to fight tooth and nail to discuss why Horizon isn’t “jUsT aNoThEr rAcInG gAmE”.

Regardless, if next years nominees align with this year’s most anticipated, it will be a right royal shitshow discourse.

Why does this seem a bit smug, probably got snubbed to get everyone angry to go vote for it on this other category.

This is just clever. Seems a lot of people are upset and instead of them not watching his show he farms their engagement and social media accounts.

That isn’t how it works though. The cut off date this year is the 19th, yet the nominations are already in because [reasons].

No idea why people are blaming Geoff for the Nominations lol, it’s the general media that people should be targeting that to. The only thing however that Geoff should consider from the next time is maybe having the awards be set further in December and also extend that deadline. So many games release in the November period to capitalise on the holiday season, but are gonna be left out of these ballots and forgotten the next year.

Geoff is the cause of the structural problem. He can move the deadlines around to actually resemble something sensible if he wanted to. I personally want a separate awards show in February or so, with deadlines being Dec 31st. Keep the TGS Showcase in Dec but add an awards show that is actually taken seriously for February.

I’d have to agree with Ruthwik. I doubt that Keighley had any idea how well Forza Horizon 5 would do, and I bet that, after the numbers started coming in, he was sweating that FH5 would be nominated for GOTY. It not being nominated makes him and his awards look bad.

I think though that who makes the nominations should be made more transparent. At the moment, we have no idea who is on the nomination and judging panels, just “representatives of the gaming press.”

I equate it to the Golden Globes, awarded to North American film and television. It’s managed by the ‘Hollywood Foreign Press Association’. Sounds impressive, right? Turns out you only have to pay a fee to be accredited as an associate, and you don’t have to be a journalist. And until recently, it was a closed shop.

I’m not saying that whoever selects and votes on the Keighleys is not connected to the games industry, but who they are, well it could be anyone.

He asks this after the nominations every year.

I agree . I dont think the nominations are Geoff’s fault . Its done by the gaming review outlets and its a fact that majority of these outlets just prefer Playstation . Expect PS games to win awards and xbox games to get snubbed . But I wont blame Geoff for any of this .

While that would be ideal, putting on one show is a Herculean effort. Putting on 2 is asking a lot.

If it is anything like the HFPA - then, man, it is best to reject this show.

HFPA/Golden Globes as reported recently is one of the most corrupt shows due to a few number of people holding a lot of power on the votes. Corruption and influence on the votes are easy there. As opposed to something more bribe resistant like the AMPAS/Oscars where even if you bribe a few, it is never going to be enough.

There was one case where one of the TV series actively used the system to buy votes for a Golden Globe nomination.

You saw a lot of celebrities just mailing their Golden Globes back after this was discovered.

We have to move the conversation towards celebrating Psychonauts 2 and Deathloop.

I’m all in with the bitching about FH5 non-nomination, but not at the expense of these two.

I mean all the trailers and announces will be uploaded immediately by the publishers after being shown on stream.

I haven’t watched TGA in years, you can always watch every trailer back in full quality (not stream quality) the same day.

TGA’s start at 2 AM for us Europeans and runs for 3 hours. I never have nor ever will watch the TGA’s live.

It doesn’t in any way matter. But the ‘game awards’ are clearly a bit useless if the highest rated game of the year can’t get a nomination.

The Game Awards are clearly absolutely worthless and nobody really pays much attention to the winners. I don’t think anything on that list comes close to being a better game than FH5. Now there are games that might be individual preferences but any list has to represent the objective quality too.

Anyway I think Deathloop will win and hilarity will ensue.

Xbox are the most nominated publisher by an absolute mile which shows they are absolutely dominating the gaming space this year. And should be noted that’s even with their biggest title outside the window. So yeah an absolutely crushing year where nobody else is in the same league.

Agreed, psychonaughts 2 is a fantastic game, great overall package. I logged into vote for it on the GA web site but that’s the only click it will get from me this year.

Then I guess it’s a bad time to post Jez’s new article…
