The Last of Us Part II turns 2 years old. How do you feel 2 years later?

Pretty much the same; loved the first half narratively, some marked improvements in mechanics, but the game massively overstays its welcome and betrays its own “message” multiple times in the second half. By the end of the game I was ready for it to be over and due to the second half isn’t something I’ll be going back to despite how much I love the first.

Only had one playthrough around its release on PS4. My feelings on the story have actually grown over time, at first I thought it dragged a lot and detached me from the gameplay experience, and I still stand by that. However, I appreciate the story still, I thought it was bold and very well told. The change and contrast of PoV it attempted and imo delivered on, was really great and challenging from a storytelling perspective, even though not much from a game perspective, it felt like maybe it would have fit an episodic structure or at least for Abby’s portion to be differently fitted, I dunno how exactly though.

The gameplay was amazing. A dynamic, cinematic, stealth action with really convincing AI. Despite that it was at odds with the story, I paid no mind to that because it was just fun as hell. Liked the open area exploration they offered early in the game, again despite that it was at odds with story.

My overall thinking is that it had significantly better gameplay than TLOU1, and controversially, a better and more interesting story as well. But, TLOU had a better flow and combination of both, like, the gameplay and story weren’t as much in odds with each other as in TLOU2. In TLOU, story and gameplay go hand in hand more perfectly, in TLOU2, I thought there was some separation and noticable seams between the two.

Same as when I played it. Visuals and audio were superb (10/10 each) while combat and gameplay was excellent (9.0/10) but the story/plot/writing/characters/pacing were average (5.0/10) at best. TLOU franchise is about the story and characters and while the 2013 original was a masterpiece and my 360/PS3 game of the generation, Part 2 completely falls apart in this regard. Overall, TLOUP2 was an 8.5/10 for me but disappointing because the other categories completely carry the game to a great score despite me despising the story and everything connected to it. It was everything else in the game that kept me playing to completion.

Good game. Gameplay was great. Didnt care for characters or story.

Same as I did back then

A bloated 25 hour slog that should have been closer to 15 full of pretentious misery porn with very unlikeable protagonists, not a fan to say the least

Definitely struggles with pacing but I ultimately feel it presented it’s story the right way - loved it overall. One of my favourite games of last gen and if they release an upgraded version I’ll be happy for an excuse for a second go around

I have both these games in my backlog…

Completely agree with you peter. Story and characters destroyed what could have been an easy 10/10 game to me.

Loved it. Gameplay was fantastic and despite the bloat that the story had, I thoroughly enjoyed Abby and Lev characters.

Abby and Lev > Ellie and Dina

I love the section with Abby and Lev! I’m shocked we didn’t get any dlc for the game

I gotta wonder if they thought the game was very long already and full of story content to warrant a DLC. Or maybe, a lot of the stuff that could’ve been DLC was fitted into the game and that why it felt like the game’s pacing suffered

I’m still really sad, I wanted more Abby and Lev. They had one of the most interesting, beautiful, and sweet interactions and dynamics.

This game is Awesome. But like a Movie, there is only so many times you can watch. Might be on the radar next year to play again.

Still very, very annoyed.

I absolutely loved part 1. It was one of my top games of all time.

I saw the rumours of Pt2 but ignored them and wanted to get my own opinion.

Played Pt2 and the gameplay was good, but I heavily disliked the story direction+pacing was a bit off putting if I recall.

Because of Pt2, I’ve now got a bad vibe that affects Pt1 now, so I can never replay Pt1 and dislike the whole series which is a shame.

It’s like Game Of Thrones. Loved that series and the last few seasons destroyed the whole show forever.

Loved the game, story and characters. I never got the hate or outcry myself.

Gamee was great and the gameplay is much better than the first. I enjoyed the story, but I can see why people like the first game story much better. Game was an easy A for me

Best game ever made as far as I’m concerned.

This game is a step above anything else in so many ways, be it storytelling, voice acting, motion capture, stealth/ai/combat, etc…

The storytelling in particular is just leagues ahead of anything ever attempted within the medium.

I literally cannot praise it enough. It marks a very significant milestone in the evolution of gaming.

Visually and gameplay wise it is phenomenal, but story wise I’m not a fan. The reason why I loved the father/daughter story of the first and sadly that isn’t in this one.

I got vibes of the first when you go to the museum in the flashback and wish that had been able to continue, sadly that wasn’t the case.

I just really loved the foster parent and child story of the first and would have liked to have seen more of that.

I will say this off topic I know, but after playing the first game and the second, I so want to see a Last of Us game, but with dinosaurs instead.

Hiding in the grass from raptors or raptors hiding in the grass to kill you would be great.

That is the game I want next and I don’t care who makes it.
