Well when you put it like that, that’s rather sad.
If Im Xbox I hold an event the day before the awards that makes the awards show look like hot garbage.
Let Kojima show his Xbox Project TGAs, anything else probably better off in a Developer Direct or at their Summer Game show imo.
Yeah the ongoing game list is a joke. The rest of the lists are fine imo. The ongoing game list shows that the voters don’t pay attention to multi-player games and just vote for whatever live service game that happen to have played in the past.
Did Apex Legends, Genshin Impact and FF14 have major updates this year (genuine question)? Why was Fortnite nominated? Because of that OG mode that just reverted back to an old version of the game? Why not highlight games with meaningful updates like that Monkey Island Sea of Theives DLC? Or all the stuff added to BF2042, ESO and Halo Infinite? Why vote for the same four games year after year?
Game awards is funny…
You think that’s funny? The Indie Award nominations post got a reader’s note.
From the same people that vote it
MS should organize their own Gamepass Awards.

Yeah, Xbox is going to continue operating in the industry as normal. In the long run, journalists bias is not really anything that will impede MS/Xbox goals. Whether it’s articles, reviews, or award shows disguised as ads.
One can laugh considering how the first iterations of this show were laughed at, remember the Doritos jokes about Geoff Keighley. Now it seems to be an institution just because it exists for a few years.
They’ll be top 3, maybe top 2 in revenue now the ABK deal is done and all of this is before CoD and everything else gets added to Game Pass so I’m sure Xbox would like less shitty articles and narratives peddled about them but I don’t think they are losing any sleep
It will be interesting to see where Xbox’s revenue ends up compared to Tencent, PS & Nintendo.
Most calculations so far have just been Xbox + ABK, however realistically that’s not going to be the case.
Some staff costs should go down due to backend teams merging (finance/legal/HR etc).
Game sales should technically go down (if the games end up in GamePass).
Subscriptions should go up (due to the new games in GamePass).
With so many variables it’s hard to call exactly how it will play out, obviously they will be around the top regardless but it remains to be seen how CoD on GP will effect things
Obviously a huge portion of Xbox players will no longer be buying the game so that’s going to bring things down but on the other hand that will be feeding into constant subscriptions, new people buying into the ecosystem and likely many more microtransactions than before
They will also probably do the FH5/Starfield strategy of letting GP members upgrade to the Premium edition/early access for $40 or whatever which will also bring in a lot of revenue from GP members that may not have ever bought the premium edition otherwise
Been checking out the other categories and honestly, a lot just doesn’t make any sense.
Cyberpunk for best ongoing game. Or best community support for that and Destiny 2, lmao. Destiny 2, you can’t make this up. The Joke Awards.
As much as I don’t care, that’s the only one that actually got me worked up about.
Now that I’ve had a day to sleep on things, I’m obviously still disappointed. And folks have already started writing off next year’s games because the more this trend continues, the worse it looks.
But that said, it kinda needs to be established that the following GOTY-nominated/winning teams were MIA this year in GOTY.
- From Software (Winner in 2019, 2022, Nominee in 2015)
- Blizzard (Winner in 2016, Nominee in 2014)
- Platinum Games (Nominee 2014, although this year’s title was more niche)
- Square Enix (Nominee in 2020)
So Bethesda isn’t exactly in bad company. And Tango will be due in due time.
I liked FF16, but calling it an RPG is a joke and same with Lies of P. They should put those games in their correct category, which would be action. Also, it’s insane how Octopath 2 got snubbed and same with games that didn’t make the cut last year like Chained Echoes and Pentiment
