The discourse out there is pretty bad after Starfield

Sony fans reminds me of those older folks who tried to resist change because they are fearful of it, and believes their old ways is the right way, while the rest of the world continue to innovate and advance. Sony themselves realized this, and that’s why they are pivoting to live service etc. Sooner or later, Microsoft will dominate the gaming space( along side tencent etc), not because of console sales, but a combination of successful live service games, subscriptions, mobile, and consoles. Their beloved cinematic single player games might take a back seat when cash is not flowing exactly what the Sony money suits wanted.

I’m not kidding when I say that I fully expect, in around 5-10 years, articles saying that “I didn’t leave this hobby of gaming, this hobby of gaming left me” articles because we’ve moved on from sad dad walking simulators and that they’re no longer financially feasible.

It’s from May, something got updated and it auto-tweeted out. Couldn’t find anything new in it, though.

We already see it with Sony, they only do sequels or popular IP’s( like Marvel stuff) for their single player stuff nowadays because they are the only ones that has guaranteed revenues. I don’t expect innovative new IP’s from them( aside from GAAS titles or Cory Balrogs new IP), while Xbox will continue to do so because they have an incentive of doing it( feed the gamepass machine).

It’s funny… as someone who basically didn’t pay any attention to gaming media or online discourse all of last gen, and who hasn’t owned a PlayStation since the first one, this whole “walking simulator” genre feels new to me.

I had a 360 and played it heavily and was a member of an Xbox 360 specific forum. But at the tail end of that generation, maybe a few months before the Xbox One launched, I kind of fell away from it. I still played games, only much less frequently, but I didn’t pay any kind of attention to media or online discussions.

I had no idea who won GotY or which games sold well or any of that. I just played some Forza, an Assassin Creed here or there, Gears of War, the Sniper Elite series, and a bunch of 360 backlog games…

All of this is to say I wasn’t even slightly aware of this shift in gaming as it was happening, and my first exposure to it was with Jedi: Fallen Order when I bought my Series X. I was completely taken aback by it from the start. There was so much talking, so little gameplay, and early on there was some kind of action scene with a “Press Y” prompt. At that point I noped out of it.

To me, that’s newfangled and not at all what I want when I sit down to play. The whole “Press Y” for a cool action scene is just… I don’t know… lazy? They look cool to be sure, but I want more interaction and control. The games I grew up with, while primitive, were at least fully interactive, with true control of my character.

If the walking simulator style of game is now considered the “old” way… man I don’t even wanna hear what my preferred style of game is considered. Maybe everything old is new again?

I think everything in life is cyclical. People inevitably get tired of the current thing and pine for the newer thing, and often enough the new thing is actually an old thing. Honestly, I look at the current landscape of games and it’s never been more broad and diverse than it is right now. If you can’t find the types of games you like playing, you’re simply not looking hard enough. This isn’t directed at you btw, just my own general observation of today’s gamers.

I really don’t understand how gamers can be perpetually upset by what appears to me to be the dumbest and most inconsequential things. If you don’t like a game or what it’s about, great, there are literally thousands of others to choose from.

Keep in mind the ‘walk and talk’ titles that Sony 1st party are so known for are not the most popular games even on Playstation. Here are the most played games on Playstation in September and October:

They’re a popular niche and are beloved by games media, but their importance is overemphasized. Sony 1st party are gradually walking away from them, with 60% of internal resources being dedicated to developing games as a service titles.

Did they think Pentiment was any good? Cos narratively that was the best game in years. Firmly convinced of that.

Couldn’t agree more. Which is why I was so quick to nope out of Jedi. That’s one thing the huge amount of games available today has made me: completely ruthless.

No more playing something I don’t love, just because it’s one of the handful of games available to me. If I don’t love a game, or at least like very much, I’m pretty quick to hit that delete button.

I feel a bit bad for people who stick to only one kind of game. I definitely don’t, and my gaming experiences are so much richer for it. On my GotY list this year I’ll have the absolutely massive and almost overwhelming Starfield, and the small, lovely, bitesized Planet of Lana.

And then there’s people like my buddy, who only play shooters. For a while there only slower paced, semi-realistic FPS:es with sniper elements. Think Rainbow Six or Ghost Recon. Lately he’s deigned to try some shooters outside his comfort zone, like Call of Duty, but I’ve yet to get him to try Halo or Gears. Too unrealistic.

Well, whatever floats his boat I guess. He can be over there starving, while I’m over here stuffing my face.

LOL. Starfield is the gift that keeps on giving!

Gaming media needs a massive overhaul…

Rent. Free.

I genuinely think it’s ultimately good for the game that so many people can’t stop thinking and talking about it.

Better to make such a strong impression on so many people than to be a Horizon Forbidden West that’s forgotten two weeks after it came out.

(Also, let’s be real now, anyone who still thinks that there isn’t a deliberate smear campaign against Xbox games in the games media isn’t being honest with themselves.)

It reminds me of the Dreamcast days where people call the Dreamcast trash because they prefer the PS2 and then those same people will look back at it as a great console.

It’s pure fanboy drivel.

Horizon Forgotten Fast would have been a better name ?

For a game that is “trash”, “mid”, or it “f*cking sucks”, they keep talking about it and put it on the spot light. This game rent free on their head for some reason. Even redfall not getting this type of attention lol. On the bright side, years from now, people is gonna say, “this game was underrated”, or “were we too harsh on Starfield”. Gamers have such childlike tendencies lol.

Starfield has been out for a few months and there are already over 3,000 mods for it on NexusMods. And the Creation Kit isn’t even available yet. There are 8 mods already just today. So, I think Starfield is doing ok.

Much more important to make smug tweets about the one dude who’s salty

It’s bizarrely fascinating if I’m being honest. I like to think they spent several days feverishly reaching out to prominent modders and members of the community in an effort to get their “soundbite”.

If you go to the Starfield mods subreddit, people there are mostly chill, with most modders just working on their own mods, the only ones bitching are spill over users from r/Starfield who has been trashing the game and demands modders to change it lol.

Lol. I really wish people would just chill out in general.

Sounds like a nice contrast from the Forza reddit which erupted into righteous anger when the game won awards.
